Diagnosis and management of COVID toes in outpatients: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Since the beginning of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, the most common skin lesions observed due to infection with the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 are pseudochilblains (or coronavirus disease toes). However, this pathology remains infrequent and difficult to diagnose, as no specific test exists. CASE PRESENTATION: Two Caucasian women, 30 and 22 years old, presented to our General Medicine Unit with perniosis lesions on the feet during the first two waves of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. They did not have respiratory or general symptoms of severe

Use of 'wearables' to assess the up-on-the-toes test.

The mechanical output at the ankle provides key contribution to everyday activities, particularly step/stair ascent and descent. Age-related decline in ankle functioning can lead to an increased risk of falls on steps and stairs. The rising up-on-the-toes (UTT) 30-second test (UTT-30) is used in the clinical assessment of ankle muscle strength/function and endurance; the main outcome being how many repetitive UTT movements are completed. This preliminary study describes how inertial measurement units (IMUs) can be used to assess the UTT-30. Twenty adults (26.2 ± 7.7 years) performed a UTT-30 a

Plantar Plate Repair for Metatarsophalangeal Joint Instability of the Lesser Toes.

The plantar plate is a known stabilizer of the lesser toe metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint. MTP instability is a known common cause of metatarsalgia, most commonly in the second toe. In the last decade, clinical staging and anatomic grading mechanisms have been published to guide the surgeons on the treatment of MTP instability; this has also led to an understanding of how plantar plate tears relate to MTP joint instability. Direct surgical repair of the plantar plate has been described, short-term outcomes have been published, and the results are not perfect, but promising with respect to pati

Peroneal artery entrapment syndrome (PRAES): a rare cause of ischaemic toes.

A 75-year-old man presenting with intermittent discolouration of his left toes was referred to vascular surgery with suspicion of embolic vascular disease. A contrast-enhanced MR angiogram was performed which revealed bilateral dominant peroneal arteries (PRAs). There was evidence of short atherosclerotic stenosis directly at the point where the left PRA passes through the tibiofibular interosseous membrane which we postulate to be the source of the emboli. We present what is believed to be the first reported case of PRA entrapment complicated by distal toe emboli.

[AMPUTATION OR EXARTICULATION OF TOES IN PATIENTS WITH DIABETIC FOOT SYNDROME].

The results of surgical treatment of 127 patients, suffering diabetic foot syndrome, were analyzed. In 82 patients (1st group) a radical toe extirpation was accomplished; in 45 (2nd group)--a phalangopreserving operations (amputaion of toe, necrectomy, sequestrectomy, the abscess opening) were done. The reoperation rate in patients of the 1st group have constituted 6.1%, the wound suppuration -3.6%, in a 2nd group satisfactory results were achieved in 26.7% of patients, and in the rest of them--reoperations were done for the pathological process progression.

Hydatid embolism from a thoracic aortic pseudoaneurysm presenting as gangrenous toes.

Cystic echinococcosis (hydatid cyst), caused by Echinococcus granulosus, has worldwide distribution and poses a health problem in endemic areas. Embolization of hydatid cysts into the vascular tree is an unusual manifestation of the disease. The hydatid embolism results from spontaneous or traumatic rupture of the cyst, and rare case reports of this kind are not well documented in the literature. We report a case of a hydatid embolism from a ruptured hydatid in a pseudoaneurysm of the thoracic aorta. A 45-year-old woman presented with gangrenous changes of the toes of her right foot. The syndrome of painful legs and moving toes--a case report.

The syndrome of painful legs and moving toes is an uncommon and distressing condition with pain in the feet or legs and involuntary movements of the toes. It can follow spinal cord or cauda equina trauma, lumbar radiculopathy, injury to the feet, peripheral neuropathy or without any preceding causes. Ephaptic transmission in damaged nerve roots or peripheral nerves with central reorganisation may be the underlying mechanism of the syndrome. Treatment is difficult. We report a case of this syndrome following peripheral neuropathy, with a good early response to the GABA agonists baclofen and clo

Anomalies of the fingers and toes associated with Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome.

Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome is a rare congenital malformation characterized by a large angiomatous nevus; hypertrophy of soft tissue or overgrowth of bone, or both; and venous varicosities. The cases of 108 patients who had a diagnosis of this syndrome between 1956 and 1990 were reviewed. One hundred and twenty-six anomalies were found in twenty-nine patients, each of whom had one to thirteen malformations of the fingers or toes, or both. The ratio of female patients to male patients was approximately two to one. Twenty-six patients had macrodactyly affecting one to six digits; nine, syndactyly

Curled toes and perosis-like leg abnormalities in cage reared broilers.

A high incidence of perosis-curled toe type of leg disorder has consistently developed in both cage- and floor pen-reared male broiler chicks of two different genetic strains within 5 to 7 days when fed a nutritionally complete corn-soybean meal diet. Postmortem analysis of affected birds indicate classic perosis as seen in dietary manganese (Mn) deficiency. Ration modifications, such as inclusion of 50 ppm additional Mn or .5 mg/kg vitamin B-2 did not prevent or reduce the development of this leg problem. Birds reared in floor-pens had a reduced incidence (12 to 13%) of perosis-curled toe pro

Four-finger reconstruction with ten toes preservation: 5-year follow-up.

Multi-digit defects are difficult to reconstruct. A 25-year-old man underwent staged four-finger reconstructions using composite flaps and iliac grafts. Good functional and aesthetic outcomes were achieved with preservation of all toes. This represents a novel and effective reconstructive strategy.

Geometric Morphometrics Reveal Shape Differences in the Toes of Urban Lizards.

Urbanization, despite its destructive effects on natural habitats, offers species an opportunity to colonize novel niches. Previous research found that urban Anolis lizards in Puerto Rico had increased adhesive toepad area and more ventral toepad scales, traits that are likely adaptive and genetically based. We further investigated these phenotypic changes using geometric morphometrics to measure differences in toe shape, toepad shape, and lamellar morphology. Our results indicate that the increased toepad area of urban Anolis cristatellus lizards in Puerto Rico is not simply an isometric incr
