Skeletal evidence of health and disease in pre-contact Alaskan Eskimos and Aleuts.

There have been relatively few paleopathological studies of arctic populations to date, compared to other regions of North America. Studies aimed at elucidating patterns of health and disease in arctic peoples prior to contact and assessing inter- and intraregional differences in disease patterns have been particularly few. In the present study, five pre-contact skeletal samples (N = 193), representing 4 Eskimo populations from northern coastal Alaska and 1 Aleut population from the eastern Aleutian Islands, were examined macroscopically for the following indicators of health status: cribra or

Dental and temporomandibular joint pathology of the North American wolverine (Gulo gulo luscus).

This study evaluated dental and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pathology in North American wolverines (Gulo gulo luscus) from coastal southern Alaska, using 182 specimens (43.4 % females, 54.4 % male, 2.2 % unknown) collected across the 20th century. Among the individuals, 2.2 % were classified as young adults, 83.0 % as adults and 14.8 % had an undetermined age. High rates of dental diseases were identified, reflecting patterns seen in other wild carnivores, with acquired conditions occurring more frequently than congenital ones. Periodontitis was the most common pathology (98.9 %), with most

Dental and Temporomandibular Joint Pathology of the American Black Bear (Ursus americanus).

Museum specimens (maxillae and/or mandibles) from 371 American black bears (Ursus americanus) acquired between 1889 and 2006 were examined macroscopically according to predefined criteria, and 348 were included in this study. Of the 348 specimens, 126 (36.2%) were from male animals, 106 (30.5%) were from female animals and 116 (33.3%) were from animals of unknown sex. Specimen ages ranged from young adult (n = 63, 18.1%) to adult (n = 285, 81.9%), with juveniles excluded from the study. The number of teeth available for examination was 12,019 (82.2%); 7.0% of teeth were absent artefactually, 0

Generalized Developmental Enamel Hypoplasia of the Permanent Dentition Associated with Early Childhood Vitamin D Deficiency Rickets: A Case Report.

Background: Vitamin D deficiency rickets is a metabolic bone disorder caused by impaired calcium and phosphate homeostasis resulting from insufficient vitamin D. In children, severe vitamin D deficiency can disturb the mineralization of growing bones and teeth. Although the skeletal manifestations are well recognized, reports describing generalized developmental enamel defects affecting nearly all permanent teeth remain limited. Methods: A 6-year-9-month-old Japanese boy with a history of vitamin D deficiency rickets diagnosed at 2 years 5 months of age was referred to our department for evalu

A study of sub-occlusal secondary dentine thickness in overgrown equine cheek teeth.

The presence of cheek tooth loss or defects, with subsequent overgrowth of the opposing teeth, is common in horses. Little is known about the factors that control the deposition of sub-occlusal secondary dentine (SO2D) in normal equine teeth, but these are likely to include stimulation of the occlusal surface. There appears to be no information on the possible alterations to this process when teeth develop overgrowths and, consequently, of the net effect on SO2D thickness caused by reduced stimulation of the occlusal surface and of absent/reduced normal occlusal wear (attrition). The pathogenesis of excessive wear in the deciduous teeth of sheep.

The teeth and various supporting and ancillary tissues were examined post mortem from two flocks of sheep, one of which had previously shown high deciduous incisor wear. Sheep were killed in groups selected on clinical signs at equivalent ages from birth to 116 weeks of age. At the end of this time the lengths of clinical crowns of the remaining deciduous incisor teeth in the high wear flock were not measurable, whereas the other flock had up to 5.5 mm in visible crown. Using the cingulum as a marker, measurements were made from extracted teeth of the attrition of the crown and size of the roo

Comparative evaluation of the remineralizing potential of different calcium and fluoride-based delivery systems on artificially demineralized enamel surface; an in vitro study.

BACKGROUND: Enamel is the hardest and vastly mineralized structure of the human body. Inorganic salts make up the majority of it. Water and ions pass right through the enamel. The enamel undergoes demineralization and remineralization cycle throughout life. Recently, the interest in the development of calcium, phosphate, and fluoride remineralization technology has been increased leading to the development and reintroduction of various remineralizing agents such as fluoride, casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate fluoride (CPP-ACPF), nano-hydroxyapatite (nano-HA), xylitol, bioglass,

Recruitment of healthy third-trimester pregnant women and their newborns into a prospective dental study at a primary health care clinic.

BACKGROUND: Recruiting and retaining mother-infant dyads in clinical research is often complex, particularly in socioeconomically disadvantaged and ethnically diverse communities. This paper reports on the recruitment and retention strategies employed within a prospective longitudinal cohort study (First Tooth Study) that investigated the oral colonization of Candida albicans and Streptococcus mutans as risk factors for Severe Early Childhood Caries (S-ECC) and the vertical transmission of these oral microorganisms. The study population was underserved mother-infant dyads, a group historically

Efficacy of a Microencapsulated Sugar-Free Probiotic Oral Rinse on Gingival Health and Salivary Matrix Metalloproteinases 8 and 9 in Children With Down Syndrome: A Pilot Randomized Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: Children with Down Syndrome (DS) are at heightened risk for oral diseases due to their distinct physiological and immune characteristics. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), particularly MMP-8 and MMP-9, are key mediators of periodontal tissue breakdown. Probiotics may provide a novel, well-tolerated alternative to conventional antiseptics by modulating these biomarkers. METHODS: This single-center, parallel-arm, randomized, single-blind pilot trial compared a sugar-free microencapsulated probiotic oral rinse against a 0.2% chlorhexidine digluconate rinse in children with DS. Orthodontic treatment for posterior crossbites.

BACKGROUND: A posterior crossbite occurs when the top back teeth bite inside the bottom back teeth. The prevalence of posterior crossbite is around 4% and 17% of children and adolescents in Europe and America, respectively. Several treatments have been recommended to correct this problem, which is related to such dental issues as tooth attrition, abnormal development of the jaws, joint problems, and imbalanced facial appearance. Treatments involve expanding the upper jaw with an orthodontic appliance, which can be fixed (e.g. quad-helix) or removable (e.g. expansion plate). This is the third u

Management of Tooth Extraction in Patients Taking Antiresorptive Drugs: An Evidence Mapping Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a well-known severe adverse reaction of antiresorptive, antiangiogenic or targeted therapies, and usually occurs after tooth extraction. This review is aimed at determining the efficacy of any intervention of tooth extraction to reduce the risk of MRONJ in patients taking antiresorptive drugs, and present the distribution of evidence in these clinical questions. METHODS: Primary studies and reviews were searched from nine databases (Medline, EMBase, Cochrane Library, Scopus, WOSCC, Inspec, KCI-KJD, SciELO and GIM) and two regi

Assessment of evidence from teeth and the alveolar bone of skulls.

A notable lack of agreement on a standardised criterion for representing changes in alveolar bone persists, which limits its application in forensic dentistry. This study aimed to describe the data on loss of tooth substance and alveolar bone in skulls. Dental and trabecular bone information from 28 skulls from the German Helmer skull collection was collected through dental charting, intraoral photographs taken with a DSLR camera (Nikon D5600, Nikon Corporation, Japan), and small radiographs obtained using a handheld dental X-ray device (Nomad Pro 2, Kavo Kerr, Biberach, Germany). The concept of multidimensional frailty in geriatric oncology: a systematic scoping review.

BACKGROUND: One of the major challenges in geriatric oncology is to estimate the risk-benefit balance of any therapeutic proposal for each patient and frailty is one of the key components of Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA)and can also be assessed using stand-alone screening tools that predicts functional decline, treatment-related complications and mortality. This study aimed to provide an overview of the existing literature on the concept of multidimensional frailty in older adults with cancer, to clarify the dimensions included in multidimensional frailty, and the components of frai

The Roles of EDA2R in Ageing and Disease.

Ageing is a complex biological process driven, in part, by inflammaging. Recent research identifies the ectodysplasin A2 receptor (EDA2R) as a key regulator of inflammaging and a novel biomarker of ageing, with its expression increasing with age across diverse tissues in humans and animal models. Elevated EDA2R gene expression is associated with accelerated ageing, cellular senescence, frailty, obesity, acne, radiation response and increased levels of inflammatory, renal, cardiac and vascular biomarkers. Similarly, elevated EDA2R protein levels, a critical component of the proteomic ageing clo
