INTRODUCTION: Revitalization procedures have been widely used for the treatment of immature permanent teeth with apical periodontitis. The treatment procedures appear to be capable of encouraging continued root development and thickening of the canal walls. The nature of tissues formed in the canal space and at the root apex after revitalization has been shown histologically in several animal studies; similar studies in humans were recently reported.
METHODS: A 9-year-old boy had a traumatic injury to his upper anterior teeth. Tooth #9 suffered a complicated crown fracture with a pulp exposur

The study describes a multidisciplinary treatment of fenestration in the apical of a primary maxillary right central incisor due a trauma and also its sequel, an ectopic eruption of the permanent maxillary right central incisor, on 7-year-old boy. Clinically, the primary tooth had an enamel and dentin fracture with no pulp exposure. There was an apical fenestration in the vestibular region, and the permanent tooth had an ectopic palatal eruption. The primary tooth was extracted, and for the physiological reposition of the permanent tooth, which was crossed with its antagonist, a Haas appliance

After the nasal bones, the mandible is the second most common site of facial fractures, and mandibular fractures frequently require open reduction. In the trauma injury setting, multidetector computed tomography (CT) has become the cornerstone imaging modality for determining the most appropriate treatment management, fixation method, and surgical approach. Multidetector CT is also used to assess the adequacy of the reduction and evaluate potential complications in the postoperative period. For successful restoration of the mandible's form and function, as well as management of posttraumatic a

Many mandibular fractures occur through tooth sockets. The treatment plan for teeth in the line of fracture has evolved through the years because of the development of new antibiotics and fixation techniques. In this article we review the history and current studies and discuss treatment protocols for teeth in the line of mandibular fractures.

The general dental practitioner must consider orthodontic extrusion of a tooth when a subgingival defect, such as, crown fracture occurs before prosthetic rehabilitation, especially in the aesthetic zone. Extrusion enables the root portion to be elevated which exposes sound tooth structure for placement of restorative margins. This case report describes the multidisciplinary management of a fractured upper first premolar in a general dental practice. The forced orthodontic eruption is achieved by an endodontic attachment and sectional fixed appliance with an offset placed in the wire. The abil

The Editorial Board of the Journal of Endodontics has developed a literature-based study guide of topical areas related to endodontics. This study guide is intended to give the reader a focused review of the essential endodontic literature and does not cite all possible articles related to each topic. Although citing all articles would be comprehensive, it would defeat the idea of a study guide. This section will present classification of traumatic injuries, crown/root and root fractures, canal obliteration secondary to traumatic injuries, root resorption secondary to traumatic injuries (inter

Achieving a precise diagnosis of the pulp status of traumatized teeth is difficult. The time to interfere through endodontic treatment for these teeth is greatly dependent on the doctor's experience. A 24-year-old male patient suffered a traumatic injury to tooth #9 that resulted in an apical root horizontal fracture 3 days before he came to the hospital. The injured tooth showed no response to pulp sensitivity testing at the first visit and was discolored 1 week later. Tooth #9 was immobilized to its adjacent teeth for 4 weeks by a composite splint. The patient was asked to make regular follo

We report 3 cases of unusual dental injuries following facial fractures. The first patient sustained intrusion of a maxillary incisor into the nasal cavity following a mandibular fracture. The tooth dislocated into the pharynx and was found lodged in the piriform fossa during surgery. The second patient sustained intrusion of molars into the maxillary sinus following maxillary and mandibular fractures. His treatment was delayed due to life-threatening hemorrhage. The third case involved ingestion of multiple avulsed teeth into the alimentary tract following severe maxillofacial fractures. Alth

The purpose of this study is to check the efficacy of transgingival lag screw osteosynthesis in alveolar process fractures of maxilla and mandible. A single-arm nonrandomized observational study was performed for the treatment of alveolar process fractures of maxilla and mandible. In this study, 20 mixed age group patients with alveolar process fracture were included. All the patients were treated by a 2.0-mm transgingival screw fixation under local or general anesthesia. All the patients were evaluated for fracture stability, anatomical reduction, bone loss and bone resorption of alveolar pro

OBJECTIVES: The main purpose was to determine the occurrence of pulp necrosis (PN) of teeth retained at the mandibular fracture site. An additional purpose was to investigate whether perioperative use of dexamethasone increases the risk of PN.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A follow-up study on 24 adult dentate patients with mandibular body, symphysis or parasymphysis fracture. These patients had been selected from a larger cohort who had participated in a randomized study of maxillofacial fractures and dexamethasone. All patients who were suspected of having a need for endodontic treatment were evalu

Factors associated with the diagnosis, aetiology, and treatment of mandibular fractures occurring during the postoperative period following the removal of a lower third molar are discussed. The following databases were searched using specific key words: PubMed/MEDLINE, LILACS, Embase, and Scopus. The search yielded 124 cases. Sex, age, side, tooth position and angulation, bone impaction, relationship between the tooth and the inferior alveolar nerve, local pathological conditions, aetiology of the fracture, symptomatology, and time between surgery and fracture, as well as any displacement of t

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the causes of root fractures by examining fractured roots histologically.
METHODS: Fractured roots were sectioned for microscopic analysis in conventional histological ways.
RESULTS: 1. Among 18 roots cut transversely were 14 flat roots with 2 canals, 2. most of the fractures passed along incremental line in dentine, 3. of the longitudinally sectioned roots, areas of marked resorption were visible on the dentine within the fractures of apical third, and 4. repairs of both soft and hard tissues were observed in the fracture spaces.
CONCLUSION: The fractures of roots wer

Vertical root fractures in endodontically treated teeth occur frequently in teeth or roots in which their mesiodistal dimension is narrow, such as the maxillary upper premolars. Two cases of vertical root fractures in two adjacent maxillary reconstructed teeth are presented. As in many cases of vertical root fractures, the primary diagnosis was of endodontic treatment failure. The final diagnosis of the fractures was made either by the radiograph showing separation of root segments in one case, or by surgical exploration in the other. In both cases, tooth extraction was unavoidable.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Primary teeth are frequently affected by traumatic dental injuries. Root fractures are rare and have a reported incidence of 2% in the primary dentition. Hence, there is limited evidence on this topic. This study aims to evaluate the risk of healing complications in primary teeth with root fracture and to identify possible sequelae in the permanent dentition following root fracture in the primary dentition.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of a cohort of 53 patients with 74 root fractured primary teeth. The standard follow-up program included clinical and radiog
