Olfactory hallucinations in a population-based sample.

Olfactory hallucinations referring to olfactory perceptions in the absence of chemical stimuli, occur in non-clinical and clinical populations. Few studies have investigated their prevalence in the general population and little is known about factors triggering and maintaining them such as substance use, severe life events, and mood. We analyzed self-report data from 2500 community dwelling Norwegians, aged 18-96 years, for occurrence of olfactory hallucinations and co-occurring hallucinations in other modalities (auditory, visual, tactile). Analyses included age, sex, self-reported symptoms o

The posterior parietal cortex as integrative hub for whisker sensorimotor information.

Our daily life consists of a continuous interplay between incoming sensory information and outgoing motor plans. Particularly during goal-directed behavior and active exploration of the sensory environment, brain circuits are merging sensory and motor signals. This is referred to as sensorimotor integration and is relevant for locomotion, vision or tactile exploration. The somatosensory (tactile) system is an attractive modality to study sensorimotor integration in health and disease, motivated by the need for revolutionary technology that builds upon conceptual understanding of sensorimotor i

Early stages of tactual matching.

Naive sighted subjects tested under blind conditions were able to match raised dot (Braille letters) patterns relatively accurately by touch, but showed no advantage in judging identical pairs over different pairs of patterns. This was the case also for letters subjects had been taught to name. Instructions to match on name or feel had significant effects, but these did not relate differentially to "same"/"different" judgments. Under visual conditions subjects matched "same" letters faster than "different" letters. Errors in drawing the letters after tactual exposure and naming training showed

Improvements in the learnability of smartphone haptic interfaces for visually impaired users.

We report the results of a study on the learnability of haptic icons used as alerts or notifications in smartphones. The aim was to explore the feasibility of using haptic icons to create assistive technologies for people with visual impairments. We compared the performance and satisfaction of users with different visual capacities (visually impaired vs. sighted) and using different learning processes (with or without a reinforcement learning stage). The reinforcement learning stage improves the recognition rate in both types of users, although the improvement obtained by the visually impaired

[Study of non-visually induced smooth pursuit eye movements and their predictability using pseudorandom target motion].

It has been found that the smooth pursuit eye movements (SPEM) are elicited by not only visual stimuli but also non-visual information such as the subject's fingertip movement and a moving sound source. We have already reported the quantitative analysis of SPEM which were induced by somatosensory and acoustic information. In the previous study, we used a sinusoidal waveform that could be highly predictable. Since it is wellknown that predictive control has an important role in the normal SPEM, we expect the predictive control to function in non-visually induced SPEM (NVSPEM). We quantitatively

Early visual experience influences haptic cross-sectioning ability.

INTRODUCTION: Cross-sectioning task requires participants to identify the two-dimensional (2D) internal shape of cross-sectioned three-dimensional (3D) solids. This task demands advanced spatial reasoning abilities, including the mental manipulation of both two-dimensional and three-dimensional objects. While previous research has highlighted the importance of vision in understanding objects' spatial features, the relationship between successful cross-sectioning and visual impairments remains unclear. METHODS: The present study aims to investigate how early-life vision guides the ability to c

The emotional responses to the sounds of organic affective tactile gestures.

Affective touch offers numerous benefits for touchers and touchees, including emotional regulation. However, individuals are engaging in affective touch increasingly less, in part due to the digitalization of experiences, which motivates the question of whether the emotional benefits of affective touch can be conveyed in alternative ways, such as through different sensory modalities. With this in mind, we investigated the emotional responses to the auditory signals produced by organic affective touch gestures. In particular, participants in our five online experiments evaluated different sound

Wired for eating: how is an active feeding circuitry established in the postnatal brain?

From birth, mammals have to find food and maximize caloric intake to ensure growth and survival. Suckling must be initiated quickly after birth and then maintained and controlled until weaning. It is a complex process involving interactions between sensory and motor neuronal pathways. Meanwhile, the control of food intake and energy homeostasis is progressively established via the development of hypothalamic circuits. The development of these circuits is influenced by hormonal and nutritional signals and can be disturbed in a variety of developmental disorders leading to long-term metabolic, b

Direct coupling of haptic signals between hands.

Although motor actions can profoundly affect the perceptual interpretation of sensory inputs, it is not known whether the combination of sensory and movement signals occurs only for sensory surfaces undergoing movement or whether it is a more general phenomenon. In the haptic modality, the independent movement of multiple sensory surfaces poses a challenge to the nervous system when combining the tactile and kinesthetic signals into a coherent percept. When exploring a stationary object, the tactile and kinesthetic signals come from the same hand. Here we probe the internal structure of haptic

Grasping two-dimensional images and three-dimensional objects in visual-form agnosia.

Visually guided prehension is controlled by a specialized visuomotor system in the posterior parietal cortex. It is not clear how this system responds to visual stimuli that lack three-dimensional (3D) structure, such as two-dimensional (2D) images of objects. We asked a neurological patient with visual-form agnosia (patient D.F.) to grasp 3D objects and 2D images of the same objects and to estimate their sizes manually. D.F.'s grip aperture was scaled to the sizes of the 2D and 3D target stimuli, but her manual estimates were poorly correlated with object size. Control participants demonstrat

Assessment techniques to evaluate tactual aids for hearing-impaired subjects.

In order to optimize the use of tactual aids for the deaf, it is important to have a battery of assessments to determine the potential contribution of the aids to acoustic perception and speech identification. We have designed such a battery to be used with young hearing-impaired children. The tasks were developed so that they could be implemented with standard audiometric equipment and applied to subjects of varying age and to different types of tactual aids. Illustrative results from four profoundly hearing-impaired children showed that tactual vocoders allowed detection of high frequencies

Whisker-based spatial cognition in mice.

Object localization has been well characterized in the visual and auditory systems, yet how tactile inputs are transformed into a percept of object location in external space remains unclear. Here, we developed a whisker-based categorization task in head-restrained mice that requires judgments of object position in the horizontal plane. Mice categorized object positions with minimal bias relative to the task category boundary and achieved submillimeter spatial acuity by sampling the object with multiple whiskers, a process that depended on the whisker-related primary somatosensory cortex. Trait dissociation is associated with dissociative experiences arising from disrupted multisensory integration.

Dissociation is a transdiagnostic mental health symptom involving a sense of detachment from one's own body. A coherent percept of our body relies upon the smooth integration of different senses, such as vision and touch, which are processed by the brain at different speeds. We investigated the association between multi-sensory integration and dissociation in a N = 100 non-clinical sample. An immersive head-mounted display provided participants with a first-person view of their body while their arm was brushed by themselves or by the researcher. This mixed-reality setup allowed for the systema

Object and event representation in 6 1/2-month-old infants.

Two experiments were conducted in which infants had to use remembered knowledge of auditory-visual events to guide their reaching and grasping. The events involved a ball falling noisily through a tube and coming to rest at 1 of 2 locations, with either resting site specified by distinctive auditory information. The events were presented initially in the light and then in the dark to determine whether infants would remember and use the auditory cues when they could no longer see where the ball fell. In both experiments, infants' reaching behavior was initiated and carried out after the sound e

Anodal transcranial direct current stimulation over the posterior parietal cortex reduces the onset time to the rubber hand illusion and increases the body ownership.

The body ownership induced by the rubber hand illusion (RHI) has been related to a neural network involving a frontal-parietal circuit. Previous functional neuroimaging studies have demonstrated neural activation in the parietal area relative to the multisensory integration processing and to the recalibration of the felt position of body while a ventral premotor cortex activation has been linked to bodily self-attribution during the RHI. Our study aimed to investigate the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) or on the premotor cortex

A sensational illusion: vision-touch synaesthesia and the rubber hand paradigm.

For individuals with vision-touch synaesthesia, the sight of touch on another person elicits synaesthetic tactile sensation on the observer's own body. Here we used the traditional rubber hand paradigm (Botvinick and Cohen, 1998) and a no-touch rubber hand paradigm to investigate and to authenticate synaesthetic tactile sensation. In the traditional rubber hand paradigm, the participant views a prosthetic hand being touched by the Examiner while the participant's hand - hidden from view - is also touched by the Examiner. Synchronous stimulation of the prosthetic hand and the participant's hidd

Intensity Discrimination of Electrocutaneous Haptic Feedback is Enhanced at Low Frequencies and With Repeated Exposure.

Electrocutaneous (EC) stimulation is a promising modality for noninvasive tactile feedback. Increasing the pulse frequency of EC stimulation has been shown to increase the perceived intensity in a nonlinear way. However, it is unclear why the relationship is nonlinear and how the nonlinearity impacts the theoretical number of discriminable sensory gradations that can be evoked by EC stimulation, as would be necessary to effectively convey the magnitude of tactile interactions. To address this, we systematically quantify just-noticeable differences (JNDs) and corresponding Weber fractions (WFs)

Mosquito-inspired active tactile perception for indoor navigation and escape of a rigid-soft coupling blimp robot.

For autonomous navigation in indoor environments, aerial robots mostly take cameras, LiDAR, ultrasonic ranging sensors, and other devices for collision avoidance, rarely using tactile sensors. However, cameras are susceptible to lighting conditions, LiDAR requires high computational resources, and ultrasonic sensors have blind zones when measuring at short distances. In contrast, insects and rodents can perceive their surroundings via tactile sensing even in complete darkness. Inspired by the escape strategy of mosquitoes that navigate along boundaries using tactile sensing in confined spaces,

Haptic Guidance and Haptic Error Amplification in a Virtual Surgical Robotic Training Environment.

Teleoperated robotic systems have introduced more intuitive control for minimally invasive surgery, but the optimal method for training remains unknown. Recent motor learning studies have demonstrated that exaggeration of errors helps trainees learn to perform tasks with greater speed and accuracy. We hypothesized that training in a force field that pushes the user away from a desired path would improve their performance on a virtual reality ring-on-wire task. Thirty-eight surgical novices trained under a no-force, guidance, or error-amplifying force field over five days. Completion time, tran
