[Visceral larva migrans syndrome. Description of a case caused by Toxocara canis].

Visceral larva migraine syndrome in most often caused by the migration of Toxocara canis larvae in the tissues after ingestion of the embryonated eggs. The disease, characterised by granulomas, is most commonly found among children in whom it causes fever, hepatomegaly, respiratory disturbances and eosinophilia. Diagnosis is by biopsy and serum tests and prophylaxis is essential since no specific therapy exists. The case of toxocariasis described was encountered in a middle aged women and is unusual as it had lasted for several years whereas spontaneous remission is the rule.

Toxocara canis infestation. Clinical and epidemiological associations with seropositivity in kindergarten children.

We studied a cohort of 333 children in kindergarten to determine the prevalence of seropositivity to Toxocara canis, and to detect and measure chronic health effects that might be attributable to past infection. We found that 23.1% of the children had serologic evidence of infection (antibody titer greater than or equal to 1:32), assayed by means of an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Black children were more frequently infested than white children, as were children of parents who did not graduate from high school. In a subsample of seropositive and seronegative children, we found associatio

Induction of a marked eosinophilia by cyclophosphamide in Toxocara canis infected SJL mice.

Cyclophosphamide (Cy) is known to produce a marked eosinophilia in mice after antigen challenge. In this study, we studied the effect of Cy on eosinophilia in helminthic infection. Peripheral blood eosinophils were counted in SJL mice following a large dose of Cy injection, infection with Toxocara canis, and both Cy injection and T. canis infection simultaneously. Following the injection with Cy (150 mg/kg), the eosinophil counts fell sharply, then rose abruptly to six times the normal level followed by a decrease. Infection with T. canis induced eosinophilia in mice. However, when mice were b

Ocular Toxocara in siblings of two families. Diagnosis confirmed by ELISA test.

To my knowledge this study of two families with ocular Toxocara is the first in the literature to report involvement of more than one sibling. All four children had far-advanced disease with irreversible loss of macular vision in the affected eye. The clinical findings were confirmed by the ELISA test. With laboratory confirmation of the clinical findings, I expect to find not only more patients in the population at large with ocular Toxocara, but also expect to find numerous siblings in a particular family to be involved as well. Therefore, when ocular Toxocara is found in a child, every sibl

Multiple infection with Toxocara canis. Influence of antihistamines and corticosteroids on the histopathological response.

The histopathology of the tissues of mice infected with ten doses of 100 embryonated eggs of Toxocara canis and the influence of antihistamines and corticosteroids on these findings is described. The main lesions were confined to the liver and lungs. In infected but untreated control mice hepatic lesions consisted of periportal infiltrates, widespread foci of liver cell necrosis and polymorphonuclear and mononuclear accumulation and a few fibrotic granulomata. Treatment with antihistamines did not change these findings significantly, but corticosteroids decreased the amount of cellular infiltr

Association between Alzheimer's disease and Toxocara infection/exposure: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Infections may contribute to Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk. Limited evidence suggests Toxocara spp. infection/exposure could influence AD development. METHODS: We investigated Toxocara seropositivity and AD in Iranian adults using a matched case-control study. Our sample included 90 AD cases and 91 healthy older adults. Anti-Toxocara immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies were assessed via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. We computed the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) through univariable and multivariable analyses, adjusting for potential confounders. RESULTS:

Toxocara spp. eggs in public squares of Sorocaba, São Paulo State, Brazil.

The visceral larva migrans (VLM) is a syndrome observed in human infection with helminth larval eggs such as the Toxocara spp. that usually infects dogs and cats. Among the risk factors involved in the occurrence of VLM, particularly important is the size of these animal populations. Sorocaba is a city with a dog population twice as large as that recommended by the World Health Organization. This fact has led to a survey of the presence of Toxocara spp. eggs in public square soils of this city. Thirty squares were selected, fifteen located in the outskirts of the city and fifteen downtown. Soi

[Lung manifestation of visceral larva migration syndrome due to Toxocara canis infection].

32 year-old patient was hospitalized because of disseminated lung lesions. 2 years earlier he manifested chorioditis. Exact disease history suggested suspicion of toxocare infection. The diagnosis was confirmed by serological tests with anti-Toxocara canis antibodies, bronchial lavage and chest CT scan. Administration of 450 mg of dietylokarbamasin (Hetrazan) resulted in complete resolution of pulmonary lesions.

Effectiveness of Thymol-Loaded Chitosan Nanoparticles Against Toxocara Vtulorum Infective Larvae In Vitro.

PURPOSE: This study assessed the impact of different concentrations of thymol-loaded chitosan nanoparticles (TC NPs) on the physiological condition and surface morphology of Toxocara vitulorum infective larvae in vitro. METHODS: Thymol-loaded chitosan nanoparticles were produced utilizing the emulsion-ionic gelation process with sodium tripolyphosphate and then freeze dried. UV-Vis, XRD, TEM, and DLS were used to analyze optical, structural, and size properties, as well as encapsulation efficiency and loading capacity. Toxocara vitulorum worms were gathered from buffaloes, and female worms we

Migratory pattern of zoonotic Toxocara cati and T. canis in experimentally infected pigs.

BACKGROUND: Over a billion people are infected with Toxocara canis or T. cati, the roundworms of dogs and cats. Historically, T. canis has been considered the main species responsible for human toxocarosis, but as serodiagnosis cannot discriminate between the two species, this remains unresolved. We used pigs as a relevant large animal model for human infection to assess the migratory pattern of T. cati and T. canis. METHODS: Pigs were inoculated with T. cati or T. canis eggs or PBS (negative controls) and necropsied 14 or 31 days later. Different organs and tissues were examined for parasite

WormWatch: Park soil surveillance reveals extensive Toxocara contamination across the UK and Ireland.

BACKGROUND: Toxocarosis is a globally distributed zoonotic disease, but sources of infection are not well documented over large geographical scales. To determine levels of environmental contamination, soil from 142 parks and recreational areas across the UK and Ireland was assessed for the presence of Toxocara. METHODS: Toxocara ova (eggs) were isolated from soil samples by sieving and flotation and then enumerated. Individual eggs were isolated and imaged, and a subset was characterised by species-specific PCR and Sanger sequencing. RESULTS: Characteristic Toxocara-type eggs were found in 8

Toxocara canis Infection Alters lncRNA and mRNA Expression Profiles of Dog Bone Marrow.

Bone marrow is the main hematopoietic organ that produces red blood cells, granulocytes, monocyte/macrophages, megakaryocytes, lymphocytes, and myeloid dendritic cells. Many of these cells play roles in the pathogenesis of Toxocara canis infection, and understanding how infection alters the dynamics of transcription regulation in bone marrow is therefore critical for deciphering the global changes in the dog transcriptional signatures during T. canis infection. In this study, long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) and messenger RNA (mRNA) expression profiles in the bone marrow of Beagle dogs infected wi

Splenic abscess caused by Toxocara spp. in a lung transplant recipient, Marseille, France.

Infections represent one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in solid organ transplantation (SOT) recipients. Although Toxocara species are prevalent worldwide, toxocariasis is an important neglected human disease that can manifest as visceral or ocular larva migrans, or covert toxocariasis. Herein, we report and discuss the first documented case of a splenic abscess associated with toxocariasis in a 69-year-old lung transplant recipient, in France. This case emphasizes the need to include prevention of toxocariasis in the management of lung transplant patients.

Seroprevalence of Echinococcus spp. and Toxocara spp. in Invasive Non-native American Mink.

Invasive non-native species can become reservoirs of zoonotic pathogens and cause their spread during colonization, increasing the risk of zoonoses transmission to both wild hosts and humans. American mink (Neovison vison) are considered an important invasive mammal species responsible for carrying endoparasites. The aim of our study was to evaluate the role of feral American mink as a possible transmission vector of Echinococcus spp. and Toxocara spp. in wildlife. We analysed the frequency of American mink exposure to both parasites, the spatial distribution in Poland, and the variability ove
