Cognitive brain function in non-demented patients with low-grade and high-grade carotid artery stenosis.

Atherosclerotic stenosis of the carotid arteries decreases cerebral flow volume and perfusion, and may result in brain dysfunction. We studied the relationship between the degree of carotid artery stenosis and cognitive brain function in non-demented patients. Cognitive brain function was assessed in 76 patients with carotid artery stenosis (38 patients with low-grade stenosis of 50% or less, and 38 patients with high-grade stenosis of 75% or more) by recording of cognitive P300 auditory evoked potentials and trailmaking test. Results were compared to 70 age-matched healthy subjects. The P300

Integrating Clinical Judgment and Objective Measures in Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus: Key Predictors of Shunt Referral.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) is a neurological disorder affecting older adults for which symptoms may improve following shunting; however, the criteria for surgical referral remain unclear. While most studies rely on fixed cut-off scores for cognitive and gait tests, the present study examined decision-making based on clinical judgment to identify which factors influence referral. A secondary objective was to compare pre- and post-CSF tap test (CSF-TT) changes between the shunt and no shunt groups. METHODS: This retrospective study included 175 patients assessed

Altered auditory repetition suppression and MMNm in relation to cognitive tests in older adults.

Cognitive changes with aging have been connected to deficiency in early-stage cortical repetition suppression (RS) and mismatch negativity (MMN). Here, we intended to investigate age-associated alterations of auditory RS and MMN by using a roving standard paradigm, and examine their relations to cognitive performances. Twenty-two young and 22 elderly adults were recorded with a magnetoencephalography. The Chinese Version Verbal Learning Test (CVVLT) and Trail Making Test (TMT) were administered to the older group. Compared to the younger, the elderly exhibited reduced magnitudes of P50m RS in

Cognitive deficits in patients with low and high grade gliomas.

AIM: Studies in the literature with specific information concerning the neuropsychological alterations in patients with high and low grade gliomas are poor. The aim of the present study was to investigate and compare the cognitive functioning in patients with high and low-grade glioma pre- and postoperatively. METHODS: Between January 2009 and January 2011 27 patients with high-grade glioma (HG group) and 15 patients with low-grade glioma (LG group) were neuropsychologically assessed in the preoperative time, as well as 6 months and 1 year after surgery. During the examination, memory, visuo-

Long-Term Flywheel Resistance Training Enhances Cognitive Flexibility in Older Women: A 36-Week Randomized Controlled Trial.

Background: Executive functions (EFs) decline with aging, impacting functional independence. While resistance training (RT) is a promising non-pharmacological intervention, the optimal modality and duration for cognitive benefits remain unclear. Flywheel RT (FRT) imposes greater motor control and attentional demands than traditional RT (TRT), potentially enhancing EFs. Objective: To compare the effects of a 36-week FRT versus TRT program on executive function and serum insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) levels in healthy older women. Methods: This parallel-group randomized controlled trial a

Mild cognitive dysfunction in hereditary spastic paraplegia 4 disease related to fluorodesoxyglucose cerebral positron emission tomography.

Autosomal dominant spastic paraplegia type 4 (SPG4, SPAST gene) is commonly described as a pure phenotype, with progressive spastic weakness of the lower limbs. Some cognitive disorders have been reported but remain difficult to characterize. Brain flurodesoxyglucose (18F-FDG) PET is a sensitive biomarker of glycolytic metabolism and shows loss of neuronal activity. Our objective was to describe the cognitive impairment of SPG4 patients, supported by brain 18F-FDG PET, to characterize the cognitive pattern and its localization. Twenty subjects from the Grand Est region, with a pathogenic varia

Step by Step: Kinematics of the Reciprocal Trail Making Task Predict Slowness of Activities of Daily Living Performance in Alzheimer's Disease.

Dementia impairs the ability to perform everyday activities. Reduced motor capacity and executive functions as well as loss of memory function and forms of apraxia and action disorganization syndrome can be reasons for such impairments. In this study, an analysis of the hand trajectories during the sequential movements in an adapted version of the trail making task, the reciprocal trail making task (RTMT), was used to predict performance in activities of daily living (ADL) of patients suffering from mild cognitive impairment and dementia. 1 patient with dementia of the Alzheimer's type and 15

Probing the Role of a Regional Quantitative Assessment of Amyloid PET.

BACKGROUND: In clinical practice, the amy-PET is globally inspected to provide a binary outcome, but the role of a regional assessment has not been fully investigated yet. OBJECTIVE: To deepen the role of regional amyloid burden and its implication on clinical-neuropsychological features. MATERIALS: Amy-PET and a complete neuropsychological assessment (Trail Making Test, Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test, semantic verbal fluency, Symbol Digit, Stroop, visuoconstruction) were available in 109 patients with clinical suspicion of Alzheimer's disease. By averaging the standardized uptake value r

Driving after stroke: A trichotomous logistic regression model to support decision making in uncertain cases.

BACKGROUND: Assessing fitness to drive after stroke is a complex clinical task, as even mild cognitive deficits can undermine safety. Due to the substantial overlap in cognitive test results between safe and unsafe drivers, binary classification models inevitably carry a risk of misclassification. This study aimed to develop and validate a logistic regression model that introduces a third, indeterminate category - leaving room for clinicians to withhold judgment in uncertain cases and thereby support more cautious, evidence-based decisions. METHODS: A total of 115 stroke survivors underwent a

Impact of somato-cognitive coordination therapy on activities of daily living in a patient with Huntington's disease.

Huntington's disease (HD) causes progressive neurodegeneration, impairing activities of daily living (ADL). Treatment focuses primarily on symptomatic relief through multidisciplinary approaches. This case report examines the impact of somato-cognitive coordination therapy (SCCT) on ADL in a patient with HD. A woman in her 40s with early-stage HD underwent 22 SCCT sessions using the mediVR KAGURA (mediVR), a virtual reality technology-based medical device over 20 months. Her total functional capacity rating scale improved from 10 to 11 and her Barthel Index improved from 90 to 100 within 3 mon

Executive function improvement in normal pressure hydrocephalus following shunt surgery.

The aim of this investigation was to evaluate improvement of executive functions after shunt surgery in patients with early normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). Patients with NPH were assessed before and after shunt surgery with tests shown to be sensitive to damage to the prefrontal cortex (PFC). Significant differences were found between basal and follow-up performances on the Boston Naming Test, the backwards digits span, Part B of the Trail Making Test, and the number of words produced on the phonological fluency task. In conclusion, our study reveals that patients with NPH who respond pos

[Effect of modafinil in narcoleptic patients. Electrophysiologic and psychometric studies].

Clinical efficiency of Modafinil was clearly demonstrated in narcoleptic patients but only a few electrophysiological studies were carried out to confirm these observations. Since Modafinil did not change the propensy to fall asleep, the aim of this work was to study maintenance of wakefulness and performance levels in treated narcoleptic patients. Of the 16 treated patients, 12 responded as expected to Modafinil. These 12 patients were studied. After a one night polysomnography, electrophysiological tests included: baseline spectral analysis, maintenance of wakefulness tests carried out respe

Cognitive function in major depression.

Forty patients with a major depressive episode were divided into equal endogenous and neurotic sub-groups using the Newcastle scale. They were all rated on the 17-item Hamilton scale and with a variety of neuropsychological tests. They were compared with 20 age- and education-matched control subjects. Both endogenous and neurotic groups had impaired memory function on the auditory verbal learning test; recall and recognition were equally impaired suggesting that effort was not a major determinant of performance. The endogenous group was more impaired on digit symbol substitution and the Trail

Middle-age cerebral small vessel disease and cognitive function in later life: a population-based prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral small vessel disease (cSVD) is a major pathologic substrate of vascular contribution to cognitive impairment. However, population based long-term longitudinal cognitive function data in relation to cSVD are rare. We investigated the relationship between cSVD and cognitive decline over time in middle-aged through elderly population. METHODS: This prospective cohort study was conducted in a community-based adult population (avg. age 58.5 ± 6.4) who underwent both magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and comprehensive neuropsychological tests at baseline (2011-2014). The partici

Daytime Napping Benefits Passing Performance and Scanning Activity in Elite Soccer Players.

The present study explored the effect of a daytime napping opportunity on scanning activity, which is an essential component of successful soccer performance. Fourteen male elite collegiate soccer players performed the Trail Making Test (TMT), which was used to assess complex visual attention. In addition, a soccer passing test, modified with reference to the Loughborough Soccer Passing Test, was used to evaluate passing performance as well as scanning activity. A cross-over design was applied to examine nap and no-nap interventions. Participants (N = 14, mean age: 21.6 SD = 0.5 years, height:

Differences in the neuropsychological profiles of high-functioning TSC adults with and without epilepsy.

BACKGROUND: Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a multisystem genetic disorder often accompanied by neuropsychiatric symptoms, including epilepsy and cognitive impairments. While the cognitive impact of epilepsy in TSC is well documented in children, there is a paucity of studies examining neuropsychological functioning in high-functioning adults, particularly in relation to epilepsy status. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate cognitive functioning in adults with clinically or molecularly confirmed TSC, without intellectual disability or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), with a specific

[Autism spectrum disorders in adulthood: clinical and neuropsychological findings of Aspergers syndrome diagnosed late in life].

INTRODUCTION: High-functioning autism (HFA) and Aspergers syndrome (AS) are autism spectrum disorders (ASD) characterised by disturbances in social interaction, both verbal and non-verbal communication and repetitive and/or restrictive behaviour since early childhood. Symptoms appear generally during early childhood and adolescence. The increasing need to clarify diagnostic queries in advanced age led to the constitution of specialised outpatient clinics for adults involving a growing amount of HFA/AS subjects diagnosed late in life. However, thus far neuropsychological data about this group a
