Main causes of pre-donation deferral of prospective blood donors in the Singapore Blood Transfusion Service.

A retrospective study of the main causes of pre-donation deferral of prospective blood donors in the Singapore Blood Transfusion Service was carried out. Computerised records of all pre-donation deferrals from 1 January 1988 to 31 December 1991 were studied. A total of 278,401 pre-donation screening interviews were carried out during this period. Forty thousand one hundred and sixty-three or 14.4% of these transactions resulted in deferral of prospective blood donors either temporarily or permanently. Analysis of the deferrals showed that the top ten defined causes were: recent ingestion of me

The role of forensic evidence in Indonesia's criminal justice.

This study aims, first, to analyse the position of forensic evidence in the criminal justice process in Indonesia; and second, to examine the extent to which forensic evidence is effectively employed as a basis of proof by judges and public prosecutors in the criminal justice process in Indonesia. This study was conducted in two stages, namely a doctrinal analysis of legal regulations in Indonesia and an empirical study through the collection of court decisions betwen January 2023 and December 2024 from four district courts representing three regions of Indonesia. The role of forensic evidence

'An Embodied Journey Towards Recovery': A Grounded Theory of Mental Health Service Users' Experiences of a Nature-based Intervention.

BACKGROUND: Nature-based interventions (NBIs) have been identified to support a recovery-oriented approach for people experiencing mental health issues. However, there is still limited knowledge related to how mental health service users experience their recovery process when engaged in NBIs. AIM: To explore and explain how mental health service users experience the process of personal recovery from participating in a newly developed NBI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was conducted using constructivist grounded theory and included 20 participants. The NBI, including equine-assisted therap

A comprehensive model of maternal health behavior: the interplay of sociodemographic and digital determinants in Nigeria.

This study develops an integrated model to identify significant sociodemographic and digital determinants of maternal health service utilization among married women in Nigeria. A cross-sectional analysis of data from the 2018 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) was conducted on 28,888 married women aged 15-49. All analyses were conducted using the Complex Samples module in IBM SPSS Statistics, applying design-corrected variance estimation appropriate for the stratified cluster design of the NDHS. The design-weighted prevalence of six or more antenatal care visits was 25%, and the prev

DBpHash: a blockchain-based dual-band perceptual hashing framework for copyright protection of purely chromatic background images.

Pure chromatic background images (PCBIs) consist of large uniform regions with minimal structural content, which makes standard perceptual hashing based on low-frequency DCT unreliable. High similarity scores may be assigned to visually different images, leading to false acceptance. In blockchain-based copyright registration systems, such transactions are irreversible once confirmed, necessitating a conservative similarity model. This paper proposes DBpHash, a dual-band perceptual hashing framework for blockchain-based copyright registration and verification of PCBIs. During computation, low-f

Impact and cost-effectiveness of the community-led AMETHIST intervention among female sex workers in Zimbabwe.

Female sex workers (FSW) face high HIV risk of HIV transmission and acquisition. The AMETHIST ("Adapted Microplanning: Eliminating Transmissible HIV In Sex Transactions") trial enhanced Zimbabwe's Key Populations (KP) programme by providing targeted, community-based support for FSW. We used the HIV Synthesis Model to assess its long-term impact and cost-effectiveness. Given USAID's major role in funding, we also evaluated the effects of ending US support on the KP programme. We modelled a KP programme from 2010. From 2024 we compared (i) continuation of KP programme to (ii) continuation of KP

Cognitive symptoms progress with limbic-predominant age-related TDP-43 encephalopathy stage and co-occurrence with Alzheimer disease.

Limbic-predominant age-related TDP-43 encephalopathy neuropathologic change (LATE-NC) is a neuropathologic entity characterized by transactive response DNA-binding protein of 43-kDa (TDP-43)-immunoreactive inclusions that originate in the amygdala and then progress to the hippocampi and middle frontal gyrus. LATE-NC may mimic Alzheimer disease clinically and often co-occurs with Alzheimer disease neuropathologic change (ADNC). This report focuses on the cognitive effects of isolated and concomitant LATE-NC and ADNC. Cognitive/neuropsychological, neuropathologic, genetic, and demographic variab

Young women who sell sex in Bangui, Central African Republic: a neglected group highly vulnerable to HIV.

BACKGROUND: The objectives of this study were to determine the association between the vulnerability factors linked to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other sexually transmitted infection among the young women who sell sex (YWSS) group (15-24 years) and adult sex workers, engaged in consensual sex for money (AFSW). METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among AFSW involved in commercial sex transactions. Prevalence ratios (PR) analysis was carried out using log-binomial regression model. RESULTS: The prevalence of HIV-1 was 29.4% among YWSS compared to 19.6% among female sex w

Inside the decentralised casino: A longitudinal study of actual cryptocurrency gambling transactions.

Decentralised gambling applications are a new way for people to gamble online. Decentralised gambling applications are distinguished from traditional online casinos in that players use cryptocurrency as a stake. Also, rather than being stored on a single centralised server, decentralised gambling applications are stored on a cryptocurrency's blockchain. Previous work in the player behaviour tracking literature has examined the spending profiles of gamblers on traditional online casinos. However, similar work has not taken place in the decentralised gambling domain. The profile of gamblers on d

The Interpersonal Regulation Interaction Scale (IRIS): A multistudy investigation of receivers' retrospective evaluations of interpersonal emotion regulation interactions.

Recent conceptual and empirical advances have focused on interpersonal dimensions of emotion regulation and, more specifically, to the features of attempted support transactions that shape the outcomes of enacted support. We conducted 2 autobiographical recall studies to investigate receivers' evaluations of intrinsic interpersonal emotion regulation interactions, to ascertain the number of dimensions required to capture variation in those evaluations, and then to examine associations of those dimensions with perceived benefits of the interactions. To do so, we developed a new questionnaire, t

Effects of valproic Acid on axonal regeneration and recovery of motor function after peripheral nerve injury in the rat.

BACKGROUND: Valproic acid (VPA) is used to be an effective anti-epileptic drug and mood stabilizer. It has recently been demonstrated that VPA could promote neurite outgrowth, activate the extracellular signal regulated kinase pathway, and increases bcl-2 and growth cone-associated protein 43 levels in spinal cord. In the present research we demonstrate the effect of VPA on peripheral nerve regeneration and recovery of motor function following sciatic nerve transaction in rats. METHODS: The rats in VPA group and control group were administered with valproic acid (300mg/kg) and sodium chloride

Isolation and characterization of cDNA encoding a human nuclear antigen predominantly recognized by autoantibodies from patients with primary biliary cirrhosis.

Autoantibodies to a novel nuclear Ag, Sp100, have recently been described that recognize a nuclear protein with an apparent molecular mass of 95 to 100 kDa and a dot-like distribution within cell nuclei. By immunoscreening of a lambda gt11 cDNA expression library derived from HeLa cells with an anti-Sp100 autoimmune serum a 0.7-kb cDNA (Sp26) coding for a fragment of Sp100 was isolated. Expression of this cDNA and use of the recombinant protein in ELISA revealed that the fragment carries major Sp100 autoepitopes and that anti-Sp100 autoantibodies predominantly occur in patients suffering from

Unpacking "High-Risk": A Latent Class Analysis of Sexual Partnership Patterns and HIV Transmission Risk Among Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex With Men in Perú.

BACKGROUND: Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) are often considered a homogenous "high-risk" group. We aimed to differentiate subgroups based on participants' last sexual partner and explore associations with HIV transmission risk factors. SETTING: We utilized cross-sectional data (06/2022 to 03/2023) from "high-risk" GBMSM in Lima, Perú. METHODS: Participants included cisgender men and gender nonconforming adults assigned male at birth reporting condomless anal sex with ≥1 serodiscordant or unknown serostatus cisgender man or transgender woman in the past 6 months. Brief Report: Sexual Partnership Heterogeneity and HIV Seropositivity Among Adolescent Girls and Young Women in Cameroon and Côte d'Ivoire: A Partner-Level Latent Class Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent girls' and young women's (AGYW) heightened HIV vulnerability has been understudied in West and Central Africa, where AGYW account for 1 in 5 new HIV diagnoses. Identifying contextually specific drivers of AGYW's HIV risk can help tailor HIV prevention programming to AGYW in the region. METHODS: We pooled data from nationally representative HIV-seroprevalence surveys for sexually active AGYW in Cameroon and Côte d'Ivoire. We used latent class analysis to partition past-year sexual partnerships into discrete typologies based on 6 relationship characteristics: cohabitation

Fostering Safety, Support, and Hope: A Qualitative Study of Multistakeholder Perspectives on Designing Health Care Services for Women Who Use Drugs in Seattle, Washington, 2023.

BACKGROUND: Women who use drugs (WWUD) experience increasingly worse outcomes from drug use as compared to men. Additionally, transactional sex, unstable housing, and unmet needs may further complicate their ability to get needed health care. To inform the design of gender-based, mobile health services, we sought perspectives on health care service delivery from WWUD and health care and harm reduction professionals (HHRPs) in Seattle, WA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 2023, we conducted qualitative interviews with WWUD (n = 16) and HHRPs (n = 5) in the Seattle, Washington area. Interviews focused

Psychological Impact and Coping Strategies of Hispanic Parents of Children with Cancer: A Qualitative Study.

Throughout the cancer trajectory, parents of childhood cancer survivors (CCSs) may experience mental and social challenges requiring continual adaptation to cancer-induced stress. Using Lazarus and Folkman's Transactional Model of Stress and Coping framework, this qualitative study aimed to describe Hispanic parents' psychological health and explore their coping strategies. Purposive sampling was used to recruit 15 Hispanic caregivers from a safety-net hospital in Los Angeles County. To be eligible, participants had to be: the primary caregiver of a CCS who had completed active treatment, the

Differentiated prevention and care to reduce the risk of HIV acquisition and transmission among female sex workers in Zimbabwe: study protocol for the 'AMETHIST' cluster randomised trial.

BACKGROUND: Female sex workers (FSW) in sub-Saharan Africa are disproportionately affected by HIV and are critical to engage in HIV prevention, testing and care services. We describe the design of our evaluation of the 'AMETHIST' intervention, nested within a nationally-scaled programme for FSW in Zimbabwe. We hypothesise that the implementation of this intervention will result in a reduction in the risk of HIV transmission within sex work. METHODS: The AMETHIST intervention (Adapted Microplanning to Eliminate Transmission of HIV in Sex Transactions) is a risk-differentiated intervention for
