Sinusoidal Transcranial Direct Current Versus Galvanic Vestibular Stimulation for Treatment of Lateropulsion Poststroke.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) versus Galvanic Vestibular Stimulation (GVS) on Lateropulsion following stroke. METHODS: Patients with Stroke and Burke Lateropulsion Scale (BLS) scores greater than or equal to 2 gave informed consent to receive sinusoidal 1 Hz DC (0-2 mA) anodal stimulation over the affected parietal cortex versus similar GVS with ipsilesional mastoidal anode. Seated haptic center of pressure (COP-X) was measured using an AMTI analog-to-digital forceplate. An inclinometer (Biopac ) measured lateral thoracic tilt. COP-X Power

Bilateral Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Reshapes Resting-State Brain Networks: A Magnetoencephalography Assessment.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) can noninvasively induce brain plasticity, and it is potentially useful to treat patients affected by neurological conditions. However, little is known about tDCS effects on resting-state brain networks, which are largely involved in brain physiological functions and in diseases. In this randomized, sham-controlled, double-blind study on healthy subjects, we have assessed the effect of bilateral tDCS applied over the sensorimotor cortices on brain and network activity using a whole-head magnetoencephalography system. Bilateral tDCS, with the catho

The influence of endogenous estrogen on transcranial direct current stimulation: A preliminary study.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive neuromodulatory technique. Responses to tDCS differ substantially between individuals. Sex hormones that modulate cortical excitability, such as estrogen, may contribute to this inter-individual variability. The influence of estrogen on tDCS after-effects has not yet been researched. This study aimed to investigate whether endogenous estrogen levels influence cortical response to tDCS. Data from 15 male and 14 female healthy adults were analyzed. Males completed one experimental session. Females completed two, one during the earl

Transcranial direct current stimulation for online gamers: A prospective single-arm feasibility study.

AIM: Excessive use of online games can have negative influences on mental health and daily functioning. Although the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) have been investigated for the treatment of addiction, it has not been evaluated for excessive online game use. This study aimed to investigate the feasibility and tolerability of tDCS over the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) in online gamers. METHODS: A total of 15 online gamers received 12 active tDCS sessions over the DLPFC (anodal left/cathodal right, 2 mA for 30 min, 3 times per week for 4 weeks). Before and

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation of the Leg Motor Area - is it partly somatosensory?

Non-invasive brain stimulation such as transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) involves passing low currents through the brain and is a promising tool for the modulation of cortical excitability. We computationally investigated the effects of the size of the anode in the conventional montage (contralateral supraorbital cathode) using finite element analysis (FEA) for the targeted leg area of the motor cortex where tDCS is challenging due to the depth and orientation of the leg motor area in the inter-hemispheric fissure. We used FEA to develop two anode sizes (same cathode size) with th

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) for upper limb rehabilitation after stroke: future directions.

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) is a potentially useful tool to improve upper limb rehabilitation outcomes after stroke, although its effects in this regard have shown to be limited so far. Additional increases in effectiveness of tDCS in upper limb rehabilitation after stroke may for example be achieved by (1) applying a more focal stimulation approach like high definition tDCS (HD-tDCS), (2) involving functional imaging techniques during stimulation to identify target areas more exactly, (3) applying tDCS during Electroencephalography (EEG) (EEG-tDCS), (4) focusing on an effec

Transcranial direct current stimulation for promoting motor function in cerebral palsy: a review.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has the potential to improve motor function in a range of neurological conditions, including Cerebral Palsy (CP). Although there have been many studies assessing tDCS in adult stroke, the literature regarding the efficacy of tDCS in CP is more limited. This review therefore focuses on the neurophysiological and clinical findings in children and adolescents with CP. Initial studies applying anodal tDCS to promote lower limb function are promising, with improvements in gait, mobility and balance reported. However, the results of upper limb studies a

[Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) for obsessive-compulsive disorder: A new treatment option?].

More than 40 % of patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) do not respond to established treatments despite advances in psychopharmacology and psychotherapy. Since a couple of years, non-invasive brain stimulation techniques gain importance in the treatment of psychiatric disorders. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) uses weak constant direct current to modulate neuronal activation and changes the function of neuronal networks. This technique is recently investigated for the improvement of treatment resistant OCD symptoms. In this review we give a concise overview over the

A meta-analysis of transcranial direct current stimulation for schizophrenia: "Is more better?".

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has generated interest in recent years as a potential adjunctive treatment for patients with schizophrenia. The primary objective of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the efficacy of tDCS on positive symptoms, particularly auditory hallucinations, and negative symptoms. A literature search of randomized sham-controlled trials was conducted using the OVID database on October 9, 2018. The standardized mean differences (SMDs) were calculated to examine changes in symptom severity between active and sham groups for the following symptom domains: audi

Response variability of different anodal transcranial direct current stimulation intensities across multiple sessions.

BACKGROUND: It is well known that transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is capable of modulating corticomotor excitability. However, a source of growing concern has been the observed inter- and intra-individual variability of tDCS-responses. Recent studies have assessed whether individuals respond in a predictable manner across repeated sessions of anodal tDCS (atDCS). The findings of these investigations have been inconsistent, and their methods have some limitations (i.e. lack of sham condition or testing only one tDCS intensity). OBJECTIVE: To study inter- and intra-individual var

BDNF Val66Met but not transcranial direct current stimulation affects motor learning after stroke.

BACKGROUND: tDCS is a non-invasive neuromodulation technique that has been reported to improve motor skill learning after stroke. However, the contribution of tDCS to motor skill learning has only been investigated in a small number of studies. In addition, it is unclear if tDCS effects are mediated by activity-dependent BDNF release and dependent on timing of tDCS relative to training. OBJECTIVE: Investigate the role of activity-dependent BDNF release and timing of tDCS relative to training in motor skill learning. METHODS: Double-blind, between-subjects randomized controlled trial of circu

Clinical utility and tolerability of transcranial direct current stimulation in mild cognitive impairment.

BACKGROUND: Neuromodulatory interventions like transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is emerging as a potential therapeutic strategy to promote cognitive function in healthy and pathological aging. There is need for more studies evaluating the utility and tolerability of tDCS in Mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Since MCI is considered as the prodromal stage of dementia, it has emerged as the most important target for intervention in dementia. OBJECTIVE AND METHOD: This study investigated the feasibility, tolerability and clinical utility of tDCS in patients with MCI. In this observat

Transcranial direct current stimulation of the rLPFC shifts normative judgments in voluntary cooperation.

Normative judgment is a key capacity for human social norm compliance. Previous studies have revealed that the right lateral prefrontal cortex (rLPFC) is closely related to social norm compliance and that it has proven stimulation effects on behavior in voluntary and sanction-induced norm compliance, but not normative judgments. Nearly all these studies have been based on sanction-induced coordination cooperation, and a number of them have found that rLPFC has no effect on normative judgment with transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). However, no research study exists regarding the ef

Astrocytes as a target of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to treat depression.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been reported to be effective in treating mood disorders such as major depressive disorder, however, its detailed mechanism of action is not fully understood. Human and animal experiments have demonstrated that tDCS promotes brain plasticity and have suggested that this consequence may underlie its therapeutic benefits. Nonetheless, the specific neurobiological underpinnings of tDCS-induced brain plasticity have only recently begun to be investigated. While brain plasticity occurs in synapses formed by neurons, astrocytes, a major glial cell t

Modulation of dual-task control with right prefrontal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS).

Executive functioning of two simultaneous component tasks in dual-task situations is primarily associated with activation of the lateral prefrontal cortex (PFC), as demonstrated in functional imaging studies. However, the precise role of the lateral PFC and the causal relation between this area's activity and executive functioning in dual tasks has exclusively been demonstrated for the left lateral PFC so far. To investigate this relation for the right lateral PFC, we used anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (atDCS; 1 mA, 20 min) in contrast to sham stimulation (1 mA, 30 s) in Exper

Online effects of transcranial direct current stimulation on prefrontal metabolites in gambling disorder.

Gambling disorder is characterized by persistent maladaptive gambling behaviors and is now considered among substance-related and addictive disorders. There is still unmet therapeutic need for these clinical populations, however recent advances indicate that interventions targeting the Glutamatergic/GABAergic system hold promise in reducing symptoms in substance-related and addictive disorders, including gambling disorder. There is some data indicating that transcranial direct current stimulation may hold clinical benefits in substance use disorders and modulate levels of brain metabolites inc
