On the transfer learning behavior of domain-specific vision-language models in screening mammography.

Vision-Language models have shown remarkable performance for natural images and text. Given the homology of the anatomy, high gray-scale image dimension, and the unbalanced datasets, the traditional VLMs do not adapt well to radiological applications. In this work, we empirically adapted image encoder trained within domain-specific VLMs to be applied in two downstream tasks for 2D mammogram image analysis: tissue density estimation and BI-RADS prediction. We study the transfer learning behavior using linear probing, fine-tuning, and online self distillation. We analyze that knowledge driven do

Comparative modeling reveals the molecular determinants of aneuploidy fitness cost in a wild yeast model.

Although implicated as deleterious in many organisms, aneuploidy can underlie rapid phenotypic evolution. However, aneuploidy will be maintained only if the benefit outweighs the cost, which remains incompletely understood. To quantify this cost and the molecular determinants behind it, we generated a panel of chromosome duplications in Saccharomyces cerevisiae and applied comparative modeling and molecular validation to understand aneuploidy toxicity. We show that 74%-94% of the variance in aneuploid strains' growth rates is explained by the cumulative cost of genes on each chromosome, measur

Prognostic pan-cancer and single-cancer models: A large-scale analysis using a real-world clinico-genomic database.

Prognostic models in oncology have a profound impact on personalized cancer care and patient profiling, but tend to be heterogeneously developed and implemented in narrow patient cohorts. Here, we develop and benchmark multiple machine learning models to predict survival in pan-cancer and 16 single-cancer settings using a de-identified clinico-genomic database of 28,079 US patients with cancer. We identify key predictors of cancer prognosis, including 15 shared across seven or more cancer types, revealing strong consistency in cancer prognostic factors. We demonstrate that pan-cancer models ge

Platelets as immune sensors: monitoring immune dynamics and diagnosing disease states across multiple disorders.

BACKGROUND: Beyond their classical roles in haemostasis and thrombosis, platelets have been recognised as active regulators of immune responses. However, whether platelets can function as immune sensors capable of monitoring immune status remains largely unexplored. METHODS: We first analysed platelet transcriptomes from patients at different stages following haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) to assess their ability to capture immune reconstitution dynamics. We then employed immune cell-platelet co-incubation experiments to elucidate the mechanistic role of RNA transfer in resha

Evaluating Limits of Machine Learning-Assisted Raman Spectroscopy in Classification of Biological Samples.

Machine learning (ML)-assisted Raman spectroscopy has become a powerful analytical tool for the classification and identification of analytes; however, technical challenges impacting its detection accuracy have not been thoroughly investigated. This study explores experimental factors affecting classification performance. Among the evaluated ML models, ML algorithms show minimal impact on classification accuracy. Instead, experimental factors, including spectral similarity between tested samples and data quality, dominate detection performance. Increases in spectral noise and spectral similari

Lightweight Fine-Tuning for Pig Cough Detection.

Respiratory diseases pose a significant threat to intensive pig farming, and cough recognition serves as a key indicator for early intervention. However, its practical application is constrained by the scarcity of labeled samples and the complex acoustic conditions of farm environments. To address these challenges, this study proposes a lightweight pig cough recognition method based on a pre-trained model. By freezing the backbone of a pre-trained audio neural network and fine-tuning only the classifier, our approach achieves effective knowledge transfer and domain adaptation with very limited

Targeted adsorbent preparation under data-limited conditions: a transfer learning-driven inverse optimization framework.

Despite extensive studies on the use of drinking water treatment sludge (DWS) for heavy metal adsorption, its application remains constrained by limited data availability in metal-specific DWS adsorption datasets and the lack of operating parameter determination under target concentration requirements. To address these challenges, a data-driven inverse optimization framework was developed to identify adsorption operating parameters of modified DWS under predefined equilibrium concentration targets. A machine learning-based forward prediction model incorporating transfer learning was trained us

Application of Deep Learning in Neuroradiology: Brain Haemorrhage Classification Using Transfer Learning.

In this paper, we address the problem of identifying brain haemorrhage which is considered as a tedious task for radiologists, especially in the early stages of the haemorrhage. The problem is solved using a deep learning approach where a convolutional neural network (CNN), the well-known AlexNet neural network, and also a modified novel version of AlexNet with support vector machine (AlexNet-SVM) classifier are trained to classify the brain computer tomography (CT) images into haemorrhage or nonhaemorrhage images. The aim of employing the deep learning model is to address the primary question

The SEEG brain network predicts epileptic surgical outcomes of radiofrequency thermocoagulation.

Predicting the postoperative outcome of stereoelectroencephalography-guided radiofrequency thermocoagulation (SEEG-guided RF-TC) remains challenging despite its increasing use in epilepsy treatment. Although SEEG-guided RF-TC has attracted extensive clinical interest, reliable biomarkers for treatment efficacy are still lacking. This study aims to address this gap by analyzing the altered brain network to predict postoperative outcome. Thirty-one focal cortical dysplasia epileptic patients who underwent RF-TC based on SEEG were enrolled in this study. They were included in the favorable outcom

Motor decoding from the posterior parietal cortex using deep neural networks.

Objective.Motor decoding is crucial to translate the neural activity for brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) and provides information on how motor states are encoded in the brain. Deep neural networks (DNNs) are emerging as promising neural decoders. Nevertheless, it is still unclear how different DNNs perform in different motor decoding problems and scenarios, and which network could be a good candidate for invasive BCIs.Approach.Fully-connected, convolutional, and recurrent neural networks (FCNNs, CNNs, RNNs) were designed and applied to decode motor states from neurons recorded from V6A area i

Automated diagnosis of ear disease using ensemble deep learning with a big otoendoscopy image database.

BACKGROUND: Ear and mastoid disease can easily be treated by early detection and appropriate medical care. However, short of specialists and relatively low diagnostic accuracy calls for a new way of diagnostic strategy, in which deep learning may play a significant role. The current study presents a machine learning model to automatically diagnose ear disease using a large database of otoendoscopic images acquired in the clinical environment. METHODS: Total 10,544 otoendoscopic images were used to train nine public convolution-based deep neural networks to classify eardrum and external audito

A chirality-sensitive approach to predict chemical transfer across the human placental barrier.

The placenta is a membrane that separates the fetus from the maternal circulation, and in addition to protecting the fetus, plays a key role in fetal growth and development. With increasing drug use in pregnancy, it is imperative that reliable models of estimating placental permeability and safety be established. In vitro methods and animal models such as rodent placenta are limited in application since the species-specific nature of the placenta prevents meaningful extrapolations to humans. In this regard, in silico approaches such as quantitative structure-property relationships (QSPRs) are
