OBJECTIVE: Photodynamic diagnosis (PDD)-assisted transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) is effective for preventing recurrence in patients with non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). However, the cost of PDD-TURBT is higher than that of standard white-light TURBT (WL-TURBT), given the use of photodynamic devices and 5-aminolevulinic acid hydrochloride (ALA). Accordingly, we evaluated the cost-effectiveness of PDD-TURBT with ALA.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included patients with NMIBC who underwent TURBT at Kochi University Hospital (2010‒2021), categorized by thei

Bladder cancer is classified by depth of invasion into muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) and non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). Because some NMIBC cases progress to MIBC, it is important to elucidate the mechanisms of invasion. Spatial transcriptomics is a powerful tool for characterizing the tumor microenvironment. We applied Visium to seven high-grade NMIBC tumors using en bloc transurethral resection of bladder tumor (ERBT) specimens that preserve three-dimensional tumor architecture. Malignant regions were divided into the tumor-upper and tumor-boundary regions, and seven case

PURPOSE: Transurethral resection of bladder tumour (TURBT) is done under general anaesthesia (GA) with muscle relaxation to prevent obturator jerk and bladder perforation. TURBT under spinal anaesthesia (SA) with obturator nerve block (ONB) may prevent the obturator jerk while eliminating the disadvantages of GA.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the outcome of TURBT under SA and ONB.
METHODS: Patients undergoing TURBT for lateral wall tumours from 01.11.2017 to 30.10.2020 were prospectively studied. Anterior branch of obturator nerve with plain Bupivacaine was blocked with the guidance of an ultrasound

BACKGROUND: Catheter-related bladder discomfort (CRBD) due to an indwelling urinary catheter causes postoperative distress. Dexmedetomidine is used as an anaesthetic adjuvant during general anaesthesia and has an antimuscarinic effect, which may be beneficial for the prevention and treatment of CRBD.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of intraoperative dexmedetomidine administration on the incidence of CRBD.
DESIGN: A double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomised study.
SETTING: A tertiary care teaching hospital.

INTRODUCTION: We investigated the subsequent trends in age and antithrombotic therapy in patients who underwent transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) and examined the rate of perioperative complications.
METHODS: Medical records of patients who underwent TURBT were retrospectively analyzed. We arbitrarily divided the observation years into three periods (I: 2007-2013, II: 2014-2018, and III: 2019-2023) to compare the trends in age and frequency of perioperative complications after TURBT between patients taking and those not taking antithrombotic drugs.
RESULTS: The number of patie

BACKGROUND: Transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TUR-BT) using 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) is common; however, intraoperative hypotension is frequent. This study aimed to investigate the impact of preoperative oral 5-ALA taking on hypotension and vasopressors dose during general anesthesia, and postoperative nausea and vomiting.
METHODS: This retrospective study included patients aged ≥ 20 years who had undergone elective TUR-BT for bladder tumors under general anesthesia. An inverse probability of treatment weighted using stabilized inverse propensity scores was adopted to minimize bi

INTRODUCTION: Sarcomatoid carcinoma of the urinary bladder is a rare bidirectional malignant neoplasm with epithelial and mesenchymal differentiation. The epithelial component is mainly high-grade urothelial carcinoma, and the mesenchymal component includes rhabdomyosarcoma. However, proper differential diagnosis of adult rhabdomyosarcomatous tumors of the bladder can be a challenge. Moreover, low-grade urothelial carcinoma as the epithelial component of sarcomatoid carcinoma has not been reported.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the recurrence rate of simultaneous transurethral resection of bladder cancer and prostate (TURBT+TURP) in the treatment of non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). We searched PubMed, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), EMBASE and the ISI Web of Knowledge databases from their establishment until March 2012, to collect all the original studies on TURBT+TURP vs. TURBT alone in the treatment of NMIBC with BPH. After screening the literature, methodological quality assessment and data extrac

Transitional cell carcinoma can develop as a multifocal tumor in the urinary system, especially in the bladder. Here, we report a 69-year-old man who had undergone transurethral resection for bladder tumor and had urethral recurrence that presented as a perineal mass 2 years after treatment. However, he had obtained normal cystoscopy, ultrasonography and computed tomography results at follow-up examinations.

Among patients with invasive bladder cancer, there are patients who cannot tolerate cystectomy due to high age or comorbidities. We retrospectively reviewed 27 patients who were treated conservatively with transurethral resection (TUR). All patients had undergone TUR and 5 patients had received subsequent pelvic radiation therapy. The survival and control of local symptoms were analyzed statistically. Sixteen patients died of bladder cancer and 4 died of other causes with a median survival of 10 months. Seven patients were alive at a median follow up of 36 months. Tumor stage, grade and hydron
