Development of a lightweight, portable, waterproof, and low power stem respiration system for trees.

Stem respiration is a quantitatively important, but poorly understood component of ecosystem carbon cycling in terrestrial ecosystems. However, a dynamic stem gas exchange system for quantifying real-time stem carbon dioxide (CO2) efflux (Es) is not commercially available resulting in limited observations based on the static method where air is recirculated through a stem enclosure. The static method has limited temporal resolution, suffers from condensation issues, requires a leak-free enclosure, which is often difficult to verify in the field, and requires physically removing the chamber or

"All Our Wisdom is Stored in the Trees" - Degrading BCR-ABL with Berberis Vulgaris.

Treating BCR-ABL-positive chronic myeloid leukemia remains impeded by the development of clinical resistance to imatinib. It has been demonstrated that berberine, a plant alkaloid, has activity against imatinib-resistant BCR-ABL mutants by inducing autophagic degradation of BCR-ABL, thereby preventing the acquisition of drug-resistant mutations.See related article by Yin et al., p. 4040.

Effects of lightning on trees: A predictive model based on in situ electrical resistivity.

The effects of lightning on trees range from catastrophic death to the absence of observable damage. Such differences may be predictable among tree species, and more generally among plant life history strategies and growth forms. We used field-collected electrical resistivity data in temperate and tropical forests to model how the distribution of power from a lightning discharge varies with tree size and identity, and with the presence of lianas. Estimated heating density (heat generated per volume of tree tissue) and maximum power (maximum rate of heating) from a standardized lightning discha

Mercury transfer from soil to olive trees. A comparison of three different contaminated sites.

Mercury contents in soil and olive tree leaves have been studied in 69 plots around three different source areas of this element in Spain: Almadén (Ciudad Real), Flix (Tarragona) and Jódar (Jaén). Almadén was the world's largest cinnabar (HgS) mining district and was active until 2003, Flix is the oldest Spanish chlor-alkali plant (CAP) and has been active from 1898 to the present day and Jódar is a decommissioned CAP that was active for 14 years (1977-1991). Total mercury contents have been measured by high-frequency modulation atomic absorption spectrometry with Zeeman effect (ZAAS-HFM) in t

Rasch Trees: A New Method for Detecting Differential Item Functioning in the Rasch Model.

A variety of statistical methods have been suggested for detecting differential item functioning (DIF) in the Rasch model. Most of these methods are designed for the comparison of pre-specified focal and reference groups, such as males and females. Latent class approaches, on the other hand, allow the detection of previously unknown groups exhibiting DIF. However, this approach provides no straightforward interpretation of the groups with respect to person characteristics. Here, we propose a new method for DIF detection based on model-based recursive partitioning that can be considered as a co

Response to the article: "primary aldosteronism: are we missing the wood for the trees?".

This letter is a short response to Dr Funder's recent commentary on primary aldosteronism under the title "Primary aldosteronism: are we missing the wood for the trees?". We briefly discuss recent data from our department on autonomous aldosterone secretion (AAS) and the efficacy of mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists in a group of patients with AAS, that would otherwise remain undiagnosed.

The use of classification and regression trees to predict the likelihood of seasonal influenza.

BACKGROUND: Individual signs and symptoms are of limited value for the diagnosis of influenza. OBJECTIVE: To develop a decision tree for the diagnosis of influenza based on a classification and regression tree (CART) analysis. METHODS: Data from two previous similar cohort studies were assembled into a single dataset. The data were randomly divided into a development set (70%) and a validation set (30%). We used CART analysis to develop three models that maximize the number of patients who do not require diagnostic testing prior to treatment decisions. The validation set was used to evaluate

Seeing trees OR seeing forests in simultanagnosia: attentional capture can be local or global.

Patients with simultanagnosia often demonstrate 'local capture', meaning that they identify only the local elements of stimuli that contain a hierarchy of both local and global structures. Recent studies, however, have found that these patients may implicitly process the global form. We examined the general applicability of the concept of local capture, and specifically whether the global level of stimuli can be explicitly reported by patients with simultanagnosia. We tested a patient with simultanagnosia with globally biased stimuli such as hierarchical Arcimboldo faces and small, dense Navon

[Scytalidium dimidiatum an opportunistic fungus for both man and Mangifera indica trees in Venezuela].

The purpose of this study was to confirm the presence of Scytalidium dimidiatum on Mangifera indica (mango) trees, in a plantation managed by a diabetic patient with a white grain mycetoma of the foot caused by the same fungus. Samples from necrotic apices, roots, burned leaves and rotten stems from eight trees were processed by the Smith and Furcolow's mineral oil technique (modified). Several isolates from the apex material and clinical samples from the diabetic patient isolated in pure culture a fungus with the macroscopic and microscopic characteristics of that in S. dimidiatum. This fungu

Gambling participation and pathology in the United States--a sociodemographic analysis using classification trees.

This article describes an analysis of gambling and gambling pathology from a telephone survey of 2631 U.S. residents, using Chi-square Automatic Interaction Detector (CHAID). Catholics were more likely to have gambled (92%) than Protestants (78%), and elderly Protestants were the least likely (55%) group to have gambled. Among past-year gamblers, men gambled more often (74 times) than women (46 times). The most frequent gamblers were divorced, widowed, or cohabiting men (125 times). Minorities were much more likely than whites to be problem gamblers (PGs). Nonpoor, married, or widowed whites w

Outbreak of Leucostoma Canker Caused by Leucostoma cincta on McIntosh Apple Trees in Wisconsin.

In fall 1996, cankers were observed on branches of 7- to 9-year-old apple trees (Malus domestica cvs. Empire and McIntosh, strains Marshall and Redmax) in a research orchard in Sturgeon Bay, WI. By summer 1997, cankers had developed on scaffold limbs or the central leaders of 48 of 48 Marshall McIntosh trees and 26 of 40 Redmax McIntosh trees, but they rarely were found in an adjacent block of 40 Empire trees. In 1998, new cankers were not observed, but existing cankers expanded. By 1999, the Marshall McIntosh block was so severely affected it was removed; 50% of the Redmax trees and 13% of th

Graft incompatibility in fruit trees in early detection: integrating physiological, molecular, and technological approaches.

This review highlights that integrating physiological, molecular, imaging, and AI-based approaches enables early and reliable detection of graft incompatibility, improving rootstock-scion selection, orchard sustainability, fruit productivity, and long-term tree performance. One of the most serious problems in fruit growing is the breaking, weakening, or dying of the tree at the graft union, either within a short period of time or after 10-15 years. This condition is often triggered by environmental factors; however, it is certainly not solely caused by environmental conditions. This problem is

Taller Trees Experienced Less Crown Damage During a Severe Hurricane in a Tropical Forest.

Hurricanes strongly regulate vegetation structure and dynamics in coastal tropical forests by causing tree mortality and damaging the crowns of surviving trees. Despite the importance of this damage for long-term forest demography and carbon dynamics, the patterns and drivers of variation in hurricane-induced damage across heterogeneous landscapes remain poorly quantified. Here, we integrate field inventory data with repeated airborne LiDAR measurements to quantify tree crown damage following Hurricane María (Category 4) in the Luquillo Experimental Forest, Puerto Rico. We applied two approach

Thermotherapy Treatments of Fruit Trees of the Genus Prunus Infected by Viruses and Bacteria.

The thermotherapy technique has been used to evaluate the viability of hot water treatments (HWTs) for the elimination of different pathogens that infect commercial fruit trees. The present project focuses on common pathogens of Prunus species at the nursery level when external propagation material is needed, which is not always in optimal sanitary conditions. Different combinations of temperature/duration treatments were applied to budwood of nectarines infected by Xanthomonas arboricola pv. pruni (Xap) and almonds infected by Prunus necrotic ringspot virus (PNRSV). These treated buds were th

Etiology and Chemical Control of Fungal Gummosis Disease in Flowering Cherry Trees in Taiwan.

Flowering cherries (Prunus subgenus Cerasus) are important street and ornamental trees in Taiwan. Gummosis disease is commonly observed on their trunks and branches, yet the causal agents remain poorly defined. In this study, fungal pathogens were isolated from diseased trees in northern Taiwan and identified through multilocus phylogenetic analysis and pathogenicity assays. Phylogenetic analysis based on internal transcribed spacer, elongation factor 1-α, and β-tubulin sequences revealed three associated species: Botryosphaeria dothidea, Lasiodiplodia thailandica, and L. theobromae. Leaf bleaching is associated with extensive transcriptional reprogramming in avocado trees with sunblotch disease.

Avocado sunblotch viroid (ASBVd), the type member of the family Avsunviroidae, causes avocado sunblotch disease; marked by the appearance of distinct chlorotic symptoms on fruit, stems and/or leaves of infected trees. Despite the economic impact of the disease, limited information is available regarding the molecular interactions underlying ASBVd infection of avocado. However, studies of other host-viroid pathosystems have revealed large-scale changes to plant gene expression in response to viroid infection. To elucidate molecular changes associated with sunblotch symptom development, we used

Missing the Forest for the Trees: Delayed Diagnosis and Management of Treatment Resistant Schizophrenia.

We present a case of a 36-year-old female with schizophrenia, coronary artery disease, and type 2 diabetes who was hospitalized for altered mental status and persistent psychosis. Initial evaluation revealed myocardial infarction, pulmonary embolism, and urinary tract infection. While delirium resolved with treatment, psychotic symptoms persisted. Brain MRI showed diffuse cortical microhemorrhages, prompting extensive workup for vasculitis, infection, and prothrombotic syndromes, all of which were negative. Despite multiple antipsychotic trials (quetiapine, risperidone, ziprasidone), the patie
