BACKGROUND: Epidermal parasitic skin diseases (EPSD) occur in most countries and cause a considerable health and economic burden, particularly in the tropics and subtropics. The aim of this study was to assess and analyse peer-reviewed literature on EPSD in humans. The results of this study serve as an indicator of the extent the scientific community, health authorities, and international health agencies interact with EPSD as a health problem that is commonly associated with poverty and poor hygiene.
METHODS: A bibliometric analysis methodology was used. The Scopus database was used to retrie

Parasitic skin diseases such as scabies, pediculosis, tungiasis, and cutaneous larva migrans are hyperendemic in the numerous poor communities in Brazil and are commonly associated with considerable morbidity. However, programs to control ectoparasites are non-existent in the country's public health system. Due to neglect of these diseases by the population itself and health care professionals, the diseases' highly contagious characteristics, and lack of effective treatment and/or presence of animal reservoirs together with a complex life cycle, effective control of ectoparasites is an enormou

There are six diseases that WHO considers as the major threat in developing countries, leprosy, filariasis, malaria, schistosomiasis, Chagas disease and leishmaniasis; and of these only malaria does not present skin lesions. These diseases are among the so called tropical diseases found in countries of tropical climate, usually infections and infestations considered exotic and rare in European and North American countries. It is extremely important for doctors of all countries to be able to provide correct pre travel counseling and to make early diagnosis and treatment, thus avoiding dissemina

BACKGROUND: Household flooring is increasingly being investigated as a determinant of health, however the pathways through which flooring may impact health and wellbeing are not yet well understood. The SABABU study is a cluster-randomised controlled trial evaluating the impact of an improved flooring intervention on soil-transmitted helminthiasis, tungiasis, and enteric infections in Bungoma and Kwale counties, Kenya. This paper presents the findings from a theory of change development process that was undertaken as part of the formative research phase of the SABABU project.

The Brazilian savannah-like area, the Cerrado region, covers large areas of the country and provides a habitat for a multitude of different animal species. The giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) is geographically widespread and one of the typical inhabitants of the Cerrado. They are listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources. A population loss of at least 30 % over the past 10 years has been estimated based on local extinctions, habitat loss and deaths caused by fires, roadkills and hunting. Little is known about ecological and in par

Epidermal parasitic skin diseases (EPSDs)-including scabies, pediculosis, cutaneous leishmaniasis, tungiasis and cutaneous larva migrans-affect millions worldwide yet remain neglected within global health programmes. Control is hindered by delayed diagnosis, fragmented service delivery, weak surveillance and limited integration of human, animal and environmental interventions. This review operationalises a One Health approach for EPSDs by proposing a pragmatic, threshold-triggered control pathway supported by a minimal indicator set suitable for district-level implementation. Besides fever and diarrhea, skin diseases are the third most common cause of morbidity in returning travelers after a stay in a tropical country. Approximately one- quarter of these dermatological symptoms can be referred to a classical tropical disease. The majority are of infectious origin. Often only the clinical appearance leads to the diagnosis of a tropical disease as myiasis, cutaneous larva migrans, tungiasis or cutaneous leishmaniasis. Not infrequently the dermatological symptoms lead to the diagnosis of a primarily systemic tropical disease. For example, an eschar with or without a r

BACKGROUND: There is upcoming evidence that dermoscopy facilitates the in vivo diagnosis of skin infections and infestations. As such, dermoscopy connects the research fields of dermatologists and entomologists, opening a new research field of 'entodermoscopy'.
OBJECTIVE: To provide an overview on the current applications of entodermoscopy.
METHODS: Systematic review of the English- and German-language literature by searches of Medline, Medscape and abstracts of the 1st World Congress of the International Dermoscopy Society.
RESULTS: Dermoscopic patterns have been described for viral warts,

Tungiasis is a parasitic disease resulting from infestation by a female flea Tunga penetrans. The parasites are endemic in the tropics and can infect patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). Augmented by uncontrolled hyperglycemia and pre-existing neuropathy, the parasite may trigger a locally spreading inflammation, which may aggravate the trauma introduced during its extraction, leading into a rapidly progressing foot ulcer. To the best of our knowledge, no such cases in patients with type 2 diabetes have ever been published from Tanzania and likely none worldwide. This case report shows that,

Dermoscopy is an essential in vivo diagnostic technique in the clinical evaluation of skin tumors. Currently, the same can also be said about its implications when approaching different clinical situations in Dermatology. A growing number of reports on dermatological scenarios and diseases have been published, in which dermoscopy has been of great diagnostic help. The term "entomodermoscopy" was coined to describe dermoscopic findings in skin infestations and also in dermatoses of infectious etiology. In part I of this article, the main dermoscopic descriptions of zoodermatoses and bacterial i

Dermatologic manifestations of travel-related illness are particularly vexing due to the broad differential diagnosis and clinicians' unfamiliarity with uncommonly seen diseases. This paper aims to educate and update the reader on selected infectious diseases in the returned traveler whose disease manifestations are primarily dermatologic. First, the evolving epidemiology of these infections is examined; understanding the geographic distribution of infectious etiologies helps refine and narrow the differential diagnosis. This is followed by a discussion of six important clinical syndromes incl

The living conditions and the crowded situations of the homeless, war refugees, or victims of a natural disaster provide ideal conditions for the spread of lice, fleas, ticks, flies and mites. The consequence of arthropod infestation in these situations is underestimated. Along with louse-borne infections such as typhus, trench fever, and relapsing fever, the relationship between Acinetobacter spp.-infected lice and bacteremia in the homeless is not clear. Murine typhus, tungiasis, and myiasis are likely underestimated, and there has been a reemergence of bed bugs. Attempted eradication of the

This paper describes patterns of infection with Tunga penetrans within the town of Icacos, Trinidad, West Indies, assessed by the number of persons infected and the extent of the chigoe flea burden by physical examination. The overall prevalence of infection was 31.4% (102 infected persons) of the 325 persons examined (41% of males and 23% of females). Both measures showed a significant difference among the different age groups with peak chigoe burden found in the 5-9, 10-14 and > 55 age-groups, with 9, 5.6 and 12 fleas per infected person, respectively. The aggregated distribution of chigoe f

Although many tropical insects carry infectious diseases, cutaneous injury can occur by other mechanisms, for example erucism (envenomation by caterpillars) or lepidopterism (dermatitis from moths). Pararama is a unique form of erucism seen in workers in contact with rubber trees in the Amazon, and it is caused by Premolis larvae, resulting in progressive periarticular fibrosis, ankylosis, and the loss of articulation. Ants and aquatic insects of the Belostomatidae family can cause painful bites and stings. Anaphylactic shock and death can result from the venom of bees and wasps. Beetles can c

In search of Wolbachia in human parasites, Wolbachia were identified in the sand flea Tunga penetrans. PCR and DNA sequencing of the bacterial 16S rDNA, the ftsZ cell division protein, the Wolbachia surface protein (wsp) and the Wolbachia aspartate aminotransferase genes revealed a high similarity to the respective sequences of endosymbionts of filarial nematodes. Using these sequences a phylogenetic tree was generated, that indicates a close relationship between Wolbachia from T. penetrans and from filarial parasites, but possibly as a member of a new supergroup. Ultrastructural studies showe

Ectoparasites or epidermal parasites include a very heterogenous group of infections of the outer layers of the skin. Worldwide the most common are scabies, lice, tungiasis, and hookworm-induced cutaneous larva migrans. In recent years, bed bug infestations in hotels or vacation homes seem to have become more frequent. Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis are found in the facial and scalp hair follicles in 95% of individuals. Classic Demodex folliculitis is often overlooked in differential diagnostic considerations. This inflammatory sebaceous gland disease as well as Demodex blepharitis bo
