White matter fibertracking in first-episode schizophrenia, schizoaffective patients and subjects at ultra-high risk of psychosis.

There is increasing evidence of white matter pathology in schizophrenia. The aim of this study was to examine whether white matter abnormalities found with diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in previous schizophrenia studies are present in the early phase of the illness. DTI was performed at 3 T on 10 male patients with a first (n = 8) or second (n = 2) psychotic episode of schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder, 10 male patients at ultra-high risk of psychosis with (pre)psychotic symptoms and 10 healthy controls. Fibertracts found to be abnormal in other DTI studies (uncinate and arcuate fasci

White matter abnormalities in metabolic syndrome patients with and without mild cognitive impairment: A diffusion tensor imaging study.

BACKGROUND: The presence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) constitutes a significant risk factor for the development of cognitive dysfunction and dementia. MetS can result in damage to the integrity and microstructure of white matter (WM). There may exist certain distinctions in WM between MetS patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and MetS patients with preserved cognitive function. Using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), we aim to investigate the alterations of the WM in MetS patients with and without MCI. METHODS: 36 MetS patients with MCI (MetS-MCI group), 30 age-, gender-, and education

Sex differences in diffusion-weighted imaging outcomes in autosomal dominant Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease is characterized by amyloid-β and tau protein accumulation. Growing evidence suggests that white matter degeneration contributes to disease progression. Despite Alzheimer's disease being more prevalent in women, understanding of sex differences in white matter microstructure across the Alzheimer's disease continuum remains limited. This study investigated sex-specific patterns of white matter integrity in individuals genetically predisposed to autosomal dominant Alzheimer's disease. We analysed data from 63 individuals (30 presenilin-1 glutamic acid to Alanine at codon 280

DTI measures in crossing-fibre areas: increased diffusion anisotropy reveals early white matter alteration in MCI and mild Alzheimer's disease.

Though mild cognitive impairment is an intermediate clinical state between healthy aging and Alzheimer's disease (AD), there are very few whole-brain voxel-wise diffusion MRI studies directly comparing changes in healthy control, mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and AD subjects. Here we report whole-brain findings from a comprehensive study of diffusion tensor indices and probabilistic tractography obtained in a very large population of healthy controls, MCI and probable AD subjects. As expected from the literature, all diffusion indices converged to show that the cingulum bundle, the uncinate

Structural connectivity of grandiose versus vulnerable narcissism as models of social dominance and subordination.

Social dominance and subordination have been linked to fronto-limbic and fronto-thalamic networks and are related to phenotypes such as grandiose vs. vulnerable narcissistic traits. The latter have been linked to clinical features such as empathy and emotional regulation. In this study we tested the hypotheses that narcissistic traits are associated with white matter integrity in fasciculus uncinate, cingulum, and anterior thalamic radiation (ATR). We applied the Pathological Narcissism Inventory (PNI) to assess narcissistic traits in a sample of 267 psychiatrically healthy individuals. We use

Rapid white matter changes in children with conduct problems during a parenting intervention.

Studies report that the microstructural integrity of the uncinate fasciculus (UF; connecting the anterior temporal lobe to the orbitofrontal cortex) is abnormal in adults with psychopathy and children with conduct problems (CP), especially those with high callous-unemotional (CU) traits. However, it is unknown if these abnormalities are 'fixed' or 'reversible'. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis that a reduction in CP symptoms, following a parenting intervention, would be associated with altered microstructural integrity in the UF. Using diffusion tensor imaging tractography we studied micros

Comparing human and chimpanzee temporal lobe neuroanatomy reveals modifications to human language hubs beyond the frontotemporal arcuate fasciculus.

The biological foundation for the language-ready brain in the human lineage remains a debated subject. In humans, the arcuate fasciculus (AF) white matter and the posterior portions of the middle temporal gyrus are crucial for language. Compared with other primates, the human AF has been shown to dramatically extend into the posterior temporal lobe, which forms the basis of a number of models of the structural connectivity basis of language. Recent advances in both language research and comparative neuroimaging invite a reassessment of the anatomical differences in language streams between hum

Volumetric development of hippocampal subfields and hippocampal white matter connectivity: Relationship with episodic memory.

The hippocampus is a complex structure composed of distinct subfields. It has been central to understanding neural foundations of episodic memory. In the current cross-sectional study, using a large sample of 830, 3- to 21-year-olds from a unique, publicly available dataset we examined the following questions: (1) Is there elevated grey matter volume of the hippocampus and subfields in late compared to early development? (2) How does hippocampal volume compare with the rest of the cerebral cortex at different developmental stages? and (3) What is the relation between hippocampal volume and con

Developmental trajectories of white matter structure in children with and without reading impairments.

Left temporal-parietal white matter structure is consistently associated with reading abilities in children. A small number of longitudinal studies show that development of this area over time is altered in children with impaired reading. However, it remains unclear how brain developmental patterns relate to specific reading skills such as fluency, which is a critical part of reading comprehension. Here, we examined white matter development trajectories in children with dysfluent reading (20 dysfluent and inaccurate readers, 36 dysfluent and accurate readers) compared to non-impaired readers (

White matter diffusion abnormalities in patients with psychogenic non-epileptic seizures.

The purpose of this study was to conduct a preliminary investigation of the white matter characteristics in patients with psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES). Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) data were collected at 3T in 16 patients with PNES and 16 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (HC). All patients with PNES had their diagnosis confirmed via video/EEG monitoring; HCs had no comorbid neurological or psychiatric conditions. DTI indices including fractional anisotropy (FA), and mean diffusivity (MD) were calculated and compared between patients with PNES and HCs using Tract-Based Spati

Changes in white matter microstructure and MRI-derived cerebral blood flow after 1-week of exercise training.

Exercise is beneficial for brain health, inducing neuroplasticity and vascular plasticity in the hippocampus, which is possibly mediated by brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels. Here we investigated the short-term effects of exercise, to determine if a 1-week intervention is sufficient to induce brain changes. Fifteen healthy young males completed five supervised exercise training sessions over seven days. This was preceded and followed by a multi-modal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan (diffusion-weighted MRI, perfusion-weighted MRI, dual-calibrated functional MRI) acquired 1 w

The impact of traumatic brain injury on sleep and associated neuroimaging changes: A systematic review.

Sleep disturbances are among the most common neuropsychiatric symptoms following traumatic brain injury (TBI). However, no review has sought to identify the major neuroimaging correlates of post-TBI sleep disturbances across multiple imaging modalities. This systematic review aimed to describe post-TBI neuroimaging changes associated with self-reported and objective markers of sleep disturbance using computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG). 21 studies were included in this review, comprising the data of 3176 individual with TBI

Brain structure and cognitive correlates of body mass index in healthy older adults.

Obesity, commonly measured with body mass index (BMI), is associated with numerous deleterious health conditions including alterations in brain integrity related to advanced age. Prior research has suggested that white matter integrity observed using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is altered in relation to high BMI, but the integrity of specific white matter tracts remains poorly understood. Additionally, no studies have examined white matter tract integrity in conjunction with neuropsychological evaluation associated with BMI among older adults. The present study examined white matter tract i

Deficits in naming pictures of objects are associated with glioma infiltration of the inferior longitudinal fasciculus: A study with diffusion MRI tractography, volumetric MRI, and neuropsychology.

It has been suggested that the inferior longitudinal fasciculus (ILF) may play an important role in several aspects of language processing such as visual object recognition, visual memory, lexical retrieval, reading, and specifically, in naming visual stimuli. In particular, the ILF appears to convey visual information from the occipital lobe to the anterior temporal lobe (ATL). However, direct evidence proving the essential role of the ILF in language and semantics remains limited and controversial. The first aim of this study was to prove that patients with a brain glioma damaging the left I

Structural and functional motor-network disruptions predict selective action-concept deficits: Evidence from frontal lobe epilepsy.

Built on neurodegenerative lesions models, the disrupted motor grounding hypothesis (DMGH) posits that motor-system alterations selectively impair action comprehension. However, major doubts remain concerning the dissociability, neural signatures, and etiological generalizability of such deficits. Few studies have compared action-concept outcomes between disorders affecting and sparing motor circuitry, and none has examined their multimodal network predictors via data-driven approaches. Here, we first assessed action- and object-concept processing in patients with frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE),

Brain morphological analysis in PTEN hamartoma tumor syndrome.

PTEN hamartoma tumor syndrome (PHTS) is a spectrum of hereditary cancer syndromes caused by germline mutations in PTEN. PHTS is of high interest, because of its high rate of neurological comorbidities including macrocephaly, autism spectrum disorder, and intellectual dysfunction. Since detailed brain morphology and connectivity of PHTS remain unclear, we quantitatively evaluated brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in PHTS. Sixteen structural T1-weighted and 9 diffusion-weighted MR images from 12 PHTS patients and neurotypical controls were used for structural and high-angular resolution dif

A novel radiological classification system for cerebral gliomas: The Brain-Grid.

PURPOSE: Standard radiological/topographical classifications of gliomas often do not reflect the real extension of the tumor within the lobar-cortical anatomy. Furthermore, these systems do not provide information on the relationship between tumor growth and the subcortical white matter architecture. We propose the use of an anatomically standardized grid system (the Brain-Grid) to merge serial morphological magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans with a representative tractographic atlas. Two illustrative cases are presented to show the potential advantages of this classification system. METH
