PURPOSE: Our goal was to assess outcomes of a selective drain placement strategy during laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (LRP) with a running urethrovesical anastomosis (RUVA) using cystographic imaging in all patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed for all patients undergoing LRP between January 2003 and December 2004. The anastomosis was performed using a modified van Velthoven technique. A drain was placed at the discretion of the senior surgeon when a urinary leak was demonstrated with bladder irrigation, clinical suspicion for a urinary leak was high

OBJECTIVES: Ureteroscopy (URS) is accepted as a primary modality to treat ureteral calculi in children and extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy and percutaneous nephrolithotomy continue to be the primary option for renal stones. We report our experience with the use of URS in managing pediatric upper tract calculi and evaluate the results in relation to stone location, size, and the use of URS as a primary or secondary treatment modality.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed for all children who underwent URS for renal stones from 1999 to 2004. Success was defined as complete

The pop-off mechanisms that sometimes occur with posterior urethral valves have well recognized implications for renal function, such that 1 or both kidneys can be protected from the deleterious effects of elevated bladder pressures. What has not been defined is the significance, if any, of pressure pop-offs to the developing bladder and ultimate bladder function. To answer this question we reviewed the records of 63 boys with posterior urethral valves. Eight boys who were not yet toilet trained had unevaluable bladder outcomes. Of the 55 remaining boys there was 1 or more pressure pop-off in

PURPOSE: Fornix rupture is a urological emergency situation. In most cases ureteral stones represent the underlying cause. We present the largest series ever reported.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between 1994 bis 2005 a total of 162 patients were diagnosed with a fornix rupture. There were 121 men and 41 women with a median age of 53 years (range: 20-79 years). We investigated the following parameters: underlying cause of fornix rupture, symptoms, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
RESULTS: In 60% of cases a ureteral stone was found as cause and in another 28% we found no reason for fornix rup

Calyceal rupture, defined as the extravasation of urine from the renal calyces into the perinephric or paranephric spaces, typically results from increased intrapelvic pressure due to urinary tract obstruction. This condition can lead to the formation of a perinephric urinoma and severe complications, such as infection, abscess formation, and impaired renal function. Timely diagnosis and management are crucial to prevent these adverse outcomes. Calyceal rupture often results from urolithiasis, with other causes including strictures, tumors, and congenital abnormalities. The rupture occurs when

BACKGROUND: Ureteral reconstruction is a highly technical type of laparoscopic or open surgery. The incidence of ureteral injury is low; however, ureteral injuries tend to be overtreated. Robotic surgery for urinary reconstructive surgery is growing in popularity, which has made procedures such as pyeloplasty, ureteroureterostomy, and ureteroneocystostomy possible, with minimal damage to the patient. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of robot-assisted laparoscopic pyeloureterostomy in Korea, in a 17-year-old female patient with a ureteral injury.
CASE SUMMARY: The patient

Renal transplantation is the treatment of choice for end-stage renal disease in children. As a technically demanding surgery with complex medical management, it is associated with a number of complications. Anatomic imaging including ultrasonography with color and spectral Doppler and functional assessment with renal perfusion scintigraphy are complementary for the detection and characterization of posttransplant complications. Complications can be characterized by the time of appearance after transplantation (immediate, early, or late) or the anatomic site of origin (perinephric, vascular, ur

OBJECTIVES: To report one case of severe lower hematuria 48 hours after urinary diversion by percutaneous nephrostomy for obstructive uropathy.
METHODS: The clinical picture, its severity, and previous procedure probably causing it made the study by arteriography essential to identify the existence of an arteriovenous fistula after stabilization of the acute anaemia; it was confirmed and selective embolization was undertaken with an optimal result. We performed a bibliographic search on Pub-Med (MEDLINE) using the terms "percutaneous nephrostomy", "complications", and "arteriovenous fistula".

OBJECTIVES: To assess the long-term effectiveness and safety of nephron-sparing surgery for the treatment of localized renal cell carcinoma with a normal contralateral kidney.
METHODS: Since 1973, 118 patients have undergone nephron-sparing surgery for renal cell carcinoma on an elective basis at our institutions. The vast majority of these tumors were incidental findings, with a mean tumor diameter of 3.35 cm (range 0.7 to 5.6). The median follow-up was 8.5 years (range 0.5 to 18), and of those patients alive, 27 (28%) were followed up for more than 10 years.
RESULTS: The pathologic stage w

PURPOSE: We prospectively tested the safety of routine removal of the catheter as early as 2 to 4 days after laparoscopic radical prostatectomy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between March 1998 and March 2001, 228 patients underwent laparoscopic radical prostatectomy for clinically organ confined prostate cancer. The last 113 consecutive patients were included in a prospective study according to gravitational cystography performed 2 to 4 days postoperatively. If no leak was seen the catheter was removed. If a leak was apparent the catheter was left indwelling for another 6 days and cystography was r

OBJECTIVE: Laparoscopic dissection of pelvic lymph nodes has become an accepted alternative to open lymphadenectomy for staging of genitourinary tumors. This study reviews the CT findings in patients with major complications detected after laparoscopic dissection.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Of 85 patients who had laparoscopic dissection of pelvic lymph nodes at our institutions during a 3-year period, complications developed in 12 patients (14%), and eight of these had abdominopelvic CT studies done. CT findings and initial interpretations were correlated with follow-up surgical, clinical, or int

INTRODUCTION: Redo partial nephrectomy (RePN) for locally recurrent renal cell carcinoma (RCC) after prior nephron-sparing surgery (NSS) remains a challenging endeavour with limited evidence. We report a case of recurrent chromophobe RCC (ChRCC) managed by open RePN combined with reconstructive ureterocalycostomy.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A 61-year-old hypertensive woman initially underwent right partial nephrectomy for a 1.5 × 1.2 cm lower-pole renal mass. Histopathology revealed oncocytic-variant ChRCC with indeterminate margins due to specimen fragmentation. Follow-up computed tomography (CT)

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The utility of virtual reality (VR) in surgical planning, education and counselling has not been fully evaluated so far. The present study aims to address this gap in exploring usefulness of VR reconstruction in pediatric urology.
METHODS: All patients who underwent VR reconstruction over the last one year (2023-24) were included. Contrast enhanced CT scan/ MRI images were obtained at 1-mm thickness. A VR model and a 3D environment were created (Immersive view5.0; Immersive Touch Inc. 910). The usefulness was assessed by three independent surgeons on a Likert scale (1-5)

INTRODUCTION: Posterior urethral valves are urethral leaflets that cause Lower Urinary Tract Obstruction (LUTO) in boys and are associated with congenital renal dysplasia and abnormal bladder function. They affect 1:4,000 to 1:25,000 births and can be responsible for End-Stage Renal Failure in childhood. There have been several studies on the effect of pop-off mechanisms in boys with posterior urethral valves, but results are contradictory. We aimed to assess and discuss the effect of pop-off mechanisms on renal function in a large cohort of patients.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: Boys with PUV with a
