BACKGROUND: Despite intervention efforts, negative alcohol-related consequences continue to impact young adults. Most alcohol interventions focus on reducing alcohol consumption; however, previous research indicates that focusing solely on alcohol use may not decrease consequences. Additionally, many alcohol interventions have diminishing engagement, and few are designed with young adults involved in the development process. Drawing on user-centered design, this study sought to understand young adult perceptions, preferences, and needs for electronic interventions specifically aimed at reducin

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Falls are a leading cause of morbidity, functional decline, and premature care entry among older adults. Assistive living technologies (ALTs) are increasingly used for fall prevention, detection, and risk monitoring, but their value depends on how older adults, caregivers, and care staff experience them in practice.
ABSTRACT: OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to synthesize user-reported experiences of ALTs used for fall prevention, detection, or monitoring across private homes, retirement villages (RVs), and residential aged care homes (RACHs), examining perceiv

Wearable auditory feedback systems have demonstrated potential to support gait rehabilitation, yet user experience and engagement remain underexplored. This feasibility study investigated the usability and perceptions of an IMU-based (WT901BLECL, WitMotion) sonification system designed to deliver real-time gait feedback. Twenty healthy participants walked on a treadmill at two speeds under three conditions: no feedback, discrete bass tones, and continuous whoosh tones. The proposed system, with an IMU sensor embedded in a flexible garment, combined real-time gait analysis with auditory cues. P

It is remarkable how quickly AI has become woven into the ways we think, write, and create, bringing renewed attention to intellectual autonomy and the long-term consequences of relying too heavily on algorithms. In this paper, I argue that effective human-AI collaboration depends on a deliberate sequence: human cognition must come first, before AI assistance enters the process. Inspired by Marcus Aurelius' sphere of control, empirical cognitive science on desirable difficulties, and the growing literature on automation bias, I propose the SSS framework, a structured, three-phase model in AI-a

BACKGROUND: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the most common peripheral vestibular disorder, yet its management often varies due to inconsistent maneuver execution and clinician training. Mixed reality offers potential to standardize procedures and enhance user guidance. This study explored expert perspectives to inform the development of mixed reality software designed to facilitate the diagnosis and management of BPPV.
METHODS: A qualitative descriptive study was conducted among 17 clinicians with experience in vestibular care. Participants completed a structured online questi

INTRODUCTION: Manual wheelchair users (MWU) frequently experience upper limb (UL) injury and pain. Clinical practice guidelines (CPG) provide guidance on how to reduce risk of UL injury and pain but the recommendations provide only general advice such as to minimizing repetitive strain by reducing rolling resistance (RR). RR is due to energy loss between wheels and ground during wheelchair propulsion and is a major contributor of repetitive strain for MWUs. Motivated by the recommendation to reduce RR, we developed a clinical decision support system (CDSS) to provide client-specific RR predict

Despite promising results in medical informatics research and the development of a large number of different systems, few systems get beyond a prototype state and are really used in practice. Among other factors, the lack of explicit user focus is one main reason. The research projects presented in this paper follow a user-centered system development approach based on extensive work analyses in interdisciplinary working groups, taking into account human cognitive performance. Different medical and health-care specialists, together with researchers in human-computer interaction and medical info

BACKGROUND: Wearable devices, mobile technologies, and their combination have been accepted into clinical use to better assess the physical fitness and quality of life of patients and as preventive measures. Usability is pivotal for overcoming constraints and gaining users' acceptance of technology such as wearables and their companion mobile health (mHealth) apps. However, owing to limitations in design and evaluation, interactive wearables and mHealth apps have often been restricted from their full potential.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to identify studies that have incorporated wearable dev

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents and young adults living with HIV (AYALHIV) face persistent challenges with antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence, a key determinant of viral suppression and long-term health outcomes. The Lu Dedoo Project sought to adapt the existing (Masakhane Siphucule Impilo Yethu (MASI) adherence app, originally developed for South Africa, for AYALHIV in Benue State, Nigeria. Guided by a human-centered design (HCD) framework, the project engaged end users to ensure that the app was contextually relevant, user-friendly, and responsive to local needs prior to pilot testing.

BACKGROUND: Health outcomes are significantly influenced by unmet social needs. Although screening for social needs has become common in health care settings, there is often poor linkage to resources after needs are identified. The structural barriers (eg, staffing, time, and space) to helping address social needs could be overcome by a technology-based solution.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to present the design and evaluation of a chatbot, DAPHNE (Dialog-Based Assistant Platform for Healthcare and Needs Ecosystem), which screens for social needs and links patients and families to resources.

BACKGROUND: Mobile health (mHealth) interventions that promote healthy behaviors or mindsets are a promising avenue to reach vulnerable or at-risk groups. In designing such mHealth interventions, authentic representation of intended participants is essential. The COVID-19 pandemic served as a catalyst for innovation in remote user-centered research methods. The capability of such research methods to effectively engage with vulnerable participants requires inquiry into practice to determine the suitability and appropriateness of these methods.
OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed to explore oppo
