Open-chest cardiac ultrasound-mediated imaging with a vacuum coupler.

BACKGROUND: A fundamental obstacle for the preclinical development of ultrasound-(US) mediated cardiac imaging remains cardiac motion, which limits interframe correlation during extended acquisition periods. PURPOSE: To address this need, we present the design and implementation of a 3D-printed vacuum coupler that stabilizes a US transducer on the epicardial surface of the heart for feasibility assessment and development of advanced, cardiac, US-mediated imaging approaches. METHODS: The vacuum coupler was 3D printed with biocompatible resins and secured with a standard intraoperative suction

Assessment of Vacuum-Assisted Closure (VAC) Therapy in Orthopaedic Infections.

Introduction Chronic and infected orthopaedic wounds may result in profound morbidity, amputation, sepsis and even death. It may need prolonged hospitalization and multiple surgical procedures for treatment. Vacuum-assisted dressing (VAD) is a comparatively newer modality for treating chronic non-healing wounds which helps in faster wound healing, decreases the frequency of dressing and reduces hospitalization time. The aim of our study is to evaluate the outcome of vacuum-assisted dressing (VAD) in the management of orthopaedic wounds. Materials and methods A case series including 20 patients

Vacuum Disc Phenomenon Turned Gassy Disc Herniation: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: The vacuum phenomenon is a radiologic finding that results from gas accumulation within degenerated discs, joints, or vertebrae. This gas can herniate, causing back pain and/or radiculopathy. Asymptomatic imaging abnormalities can be coincidental and/or non-concordant with clinical presentation therefore warranting close evaluation. CASE REPORT: This 45-year-old man, previously diagnosed with lumbar facet arthropathy, returned to the clinic for left-sided axial low back pain. Imaging revealed that a gas filled mass in the right lateral recess was affecting the traversing right L5

Vacuum-assisted delivery outcomes: is advanced maternal age a factor?

PURPOSE: This study evaluated age-related maternal outcomes of vacuum-assisted vaginal deliveries (VAD). METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included all nulliparous women with singleton VAD in one academic institution. Study group parturients were maternal age ≥ 35 years and controls < 35. Power analysis revealed that 225 women/group would be sufficient to detect a difference in the rate of third- and fourth-degree perineal tears (primary maternal outcome) and umbilical cord pH < 7.15 (primary neonatal outcome). Secondary outcomes were maternal blood loss, Apgar scores, cup detachment,

Vacuum Sealing Drainage for Primary Thoracolumbar Spondylodiscitis: A Technical Note.

Primary spinal infection is a challenge for neurosurgeons. Here, for the first time, we introduced the vacuum sealing drainage (VSD) sponge into the intervertebral space for the primary thoracolumbar infection treatment. This study included 6 bedridden patients with thoracolumbar spondylodiscitis without deformity formation. All 6 patients were treated with the VSD in our hospital from June 30, 2018, to August 31, 2019. All 6 cases of thoracolumbar infection achieved clinical cure at 3-month follow-up, and no surgical-related mortalities occurred in our series. One patient died of acute cerebr

Vacuum-Assisted Wound Closure Therapy in Pediatric Lower Limb Trauma.

Although the importance of vacuum-assisted wound closure therapy has been well established as road to definitive treatment of trauma wound in the adult population, its use in pediatric patients is not well described in the literature. This study was conducted to evaluate the outcome of vacuum-assisted wound closure therapy in pediatric patients. Twenty-two patients were prospectively treated for soft tissue defect in lower limb using vacuum-assisted wound closure device, as these wounds were not amenable for primary closure. After wound evaluation, thorough wound debridement was done. Vacuum-a

Use of vacuum-assisted closure in massive puerperal genital hematoma.

Puerperal genital hematomas are rare but life-threatening complications of obstetric emergencies. A pregnant patient (39 weeks) underwent a mediolateral episiotomy during a vaginal delivery. An afterbirth hematoma (approximately 20 cm in diameter) was evacuated, but the use of a vacuum-assisted wound closure system was applied after the sutures opened on the 7th postoperative day. On the 10th day of the vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) application, the wound was completely closed. VAC is an alternative treatment modality that can drain an infection and increase the proportion of granulation tissu

Failure of non-vacuum steam sterilization processes for dental handpieces.

BACKGROUND: Dental handpieces are used in critical and semi-critical operative interventions. Although some dental professional bodies recommend that dental handpieces are sterilized between patient use there is a lack of clarity and understanding of the effectiveness of different steam sterilization processes. The internal mechanisms of dental handpieces contain narrow lumens (0.8-2.3 mm) which can impede the removal of air and ingress of saturated steam required to achieve sterilization conditions. AIM: To identify the extent of sterilization failure in dental handpieces using a non-vacuum
