Prevalence estimation and validation of new instruments in psychiatric research: an application of latent class analysis and sensitivity analysis.

Prevalence and validation studies rely on imperfect reference standard (RS) diagnostic instruments that can bias prevalence and test characteristic estimates. The authors illustrate 2 methods to account for RS misclassification. Latent class analysis (LCA) combines information from multiple imperfect measures of an unmeasurable latent condition to estimate sensitivity (Se) and specificity (Sp) of each measure. With simple algebraic sensitivity analysis (SA), one uses researcher-specified RS misclassification rates to correct prevalence and test characteristic estimates and can succinctly summa

Establishing a reference dataset for the authentication of spinal muscular atrophy cell lines using STR profiling and digital PCR.

Fibroblasts and lymphoblastoid cell lines (LCLs) derived from individuals with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) have been and continue to be essential for translational SMA research. Authentication of cell lines helps ensure reproducibility and rigor in biomedical research. This quality control measure identifies mislabeling or cross-contamination of cell lines and prevents misinterpretation of data. Unfortunately, authentication of SMA cell lines used in various studies has not been possible because of a lack of a reference. In this study, we provide said reference so that SMA cell lines can be

Kidney tumor biomarkers revealed by simultaneous multiple matrix metabolomics analysis.

Metabolomics is increasingly being used in cancer biology for biomarker discovery and identification of potential novel therapeutic targets. However, a systematic metabolomics study of multiple biofluids to determine their interrelationships and to describe their use as tumor proxies is lacking. Using a mouse xenograft model of kidney cancer, characterized by subcapsular implantation of Caki-1 clear cell human kidney cancer cells, we examined tissue, serum, and urine all obtained simultaneously at baseline (urine) and at, or close to, animal sacrifice (urine, tissue, and plasma). Uniform metab

The efficacy and safety of radiofrequency ablation in papillary thyroid carcinoma: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) avoids the complications of general anaesthesia, reduces length of hospitalisation and reduces morbidity from surgery. As such, it is a strong alternative treatment for patients with comorbidities who are not surgical candidates. However, to our knowledge, there have only been 1 systematic review and 3 combined systematic review and meta-analyses on this topic to date. This systematic review and meta-analysis seeks to evaluate the efficacy and safety of RFA in the treatment of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) with longer follow-up durations. METHOD

[Canine pyoderma: clinical presentation, diagnosis, and topical treatment - a review].

Canine pyoderma is a common dermatological condition that is still frequently treated with systemic antibiotics in small animal practice. In light of increasing antibiotic resistance, particularly due to methicillin-resistant staphylococci, topical therapy is gaining importance. Numerous studies have now demonstrated the efficacy of topical treatments, especially for superficial pyodermas. Chlorhexidine, sodium hypochlorite, benzoyl peroxide, and ethyl lactate are among the most commonly used agents, with chlorhexidine showing the strongest antibacterial effect. In addition to its antimicrobia

Development and Ex Vivo Assessment of Topical Formulations for Delivery of Stigmasterol and β‑Sitosterol.

Phytosterols are sterol compounds naturally produced by plants and fungi, known for their ability to interact with steroid receptors and promote anti-inflammatory effects. This study aimed to investigate their potential for topical application by developing and assessing formulations containing stigmasterol (STIG) and β-sitosterol (β-SIT). A gel-cream and a topical film were prepared, and an HPLC-UV-DAD method was developed and validated for the simultaneous quantification of both phytosterols. Ex vivo skin penetration was evaluated using porcine ear skin mounted on vertical Franz diffusion ce

Local Formula with Mucoadhesive Property: A Randomized Clinical Trial of a Therapeutic Agent for the Treatment of Oral Aphthous Ulcers.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent or occasional aphthous lesions represent a painful oral condition with high prevalence. Since the etiology is still unclear and most likely related to a dysfunction in the local immune system, several treatment strategies have been proposed, including systemic agents, local agents, and laser therapy, to reduce the pain and discomfort for the patient without acting on the causes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The purpose of the present randomized study was to assess the clinical efficacy of a new topical gel with mucoadhesive property to reduce the pain and the dimension of the

Resting metabolic rate prediction equations and the validity to assess energy deficiency in the athlete population.

NEW FINDINGS: What is the topic of this review? We review the issues with using predicted resting metabolic rate equations in athletic populations. What advances does it highlight? The use of dated predicted resting metabolic rate equations is not appropriate for athletic populations until more studies have been conducted among these unique populations. ABSTRACT: Resting metabolic rate (RMR) is the amount of energy the body uses at rest. A suppressed RMR has been correlated with low energy availability and therefore used as an indicator of an individual's energy state. Furthermore, confoundin

Patient-reported outcomes of topical therapies in actinic keratosis: A systematic review.

Patients' perspectives on actinic keratosis treatments may have an impact on treatment adherence and, therefore, therapeutic outcomes. We performed a systematic review to assess patients' perspectives of topical, field-directed treatments for actinic keratoses. A literature search was conducted, and 14 studies were identified encompassing 4433 patients. Only four studies were focused on face and/or scalp, which are the locations that typically impact patients' quality of life. Four studies were clinical trials. One study utilized a validated patient-reported outcomes (PRO) instrument specifica

Antisense oligonucleotide against miR-21 inhibits migration and induces apoptosis in leukemic K562 cells.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNA molecules that are widely involved in cancer-related processes. The microRNA-21 (miR-21) has been identified as the only miRNA overexpressed in a variety of cancers, including leukemia. However, the function of miR-21 is yet unknown in chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). Antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs), as inhibitors of miRNAs, have already been applied to therapeutic development and functional identification in miRNA research. In this study, we found that the antisense inhibition of miR-21 in K562 cells suppressed cell migration, promoted cell apo
