Central corneal thickness and topographic indices in Malaysian children with vernal keratoconjunctivitis.

INTRODUCTION: Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is a chronic allergic disease characterised by intense ocular surface symptoms and corneal involvement. There is limited data about the corneal changes in children with VKC based on severity of the disease. We aimed to compare the central corneal thickness (CCT) and corneal topographic indices in Malaysian children with VKC, as well as among the varying grades of VKC severity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study is a comparative, crosssectional and hospital-based study. We recruited 83 children with VKC and 83 healthy children as controls. All chi

Efficacy of Epinastine Eyelid Cream in Pediatric Vernal Keratoconjunctivitis: A Case Report.

Allergic conjunctivitis (AC) is characterized by inflammatory responses in the conjunctiva and is often complicated by atopic dermatitis and mechanical irritation. Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC), a severe subtype of AC, presents unique challenges in its diagnosis and management, particularly in pediatric patients. This case report describes an eight-year-old girl with VKC who exhibited poor adherence to a prescribed regimen of 0.05% epinastine ophthalmic solution and corticosteroid eye drops, resulting in persistent symptoms. Despite initial treatment, the patient's condition included giant

Vernal keratoconjunctivitis: Current immunological and clinical evidence and the potential role of omalizumab.

Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is a severe ocular allergic disease characterized by chronic inflammation of the cornea and conjunctiva that may lead to loss of visual acuity and blindness. The disease occurs primarily in children and is more common in geographical regions characterized by warm temperatures and high humidity. The clinical manifestations of VKC, when inadequately treated, may lead to severe complications and corneal damage. The prevalence of allergen sensitization, specific serum immunoglobulin E (IgE), and specific tear IgE was reported in approximately 55%-60% of patients w

Prevalence of allergic sensitization with vernal keratoconjunctivitis: A systematic review with meta-analyses.

To determine the prevalence of allergic sensitization in patients with vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) and to provide an overview of published studies on this topic. We systematically searched 11 literature databases on 24 May 2021, for studies with cross-sectional data on the prevalence of positive allergy tests in patients with VKC. Our main outcome of interest was the prevalence of allergic sensitization and the allergens involved. Prevalence meta-analyses were made to provide summary estimates. We identified 33 eligible studies for qualitative review with 2122 patients with VKC. Studies

Rosai-Dorfman disease: Isolated epibulbar mass in patient with vernal keratoconjunctivitis.

A 29-year-old male known case of vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) presented with 5-month history of a rapidly growing mass on the temporal aspect of the right cornea. The 9 × 9 mm epibulbar lesion was excised and histologically showed features of extranodal Rosai Dorfman disease (RDD) with emperipolesis of eosinophils. The lesion did not recur following excision. The association of RDD with VKC has not been previously reported; however, the causal relationship remains unclear.

Bioaccumulation of methylmercury in wood frogs and spotted salamanders in Vermont vernal pools.

Mercury (Hg) has accumulated in forested landscapes in the Northeastern U.S., and hotspots with enhanced deposition have been identified throughout the region. Due to a variety of favorable landscape characteristics, including relatively high dissolved organic carbon (DOC), fluctuating water levels, and low pH and dissolved oxygen, vernal pools provide ideal conditions for the conversion of Hg to its more toxic and bioavailable form, methylmercury (MeHg). Yet little is known about the concentrations, speciation, and bioavailability of Hg in vernal pools, or its bioaccumulation in vernal pool f

Vitamin D serum levels in children with vernal keratoconjunctivitis and disease control.

The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the control of ocular symptoms with cyclosporine or with tacrolimus in eye drops allows to improve sun exposure and therefore serum level of vitamin D (VD; 25OHD), in the more severe forms of vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC). Out of 242 children followed for active VKC, 94 were treated with 1% cyclosporine or 0.1% tacrolimus eye drops, while the other 148 with mild VKC did not need to be treated with immunomodulators. VD serum levels were measured in spring and autumn in 71 children. In total, 60 of them were treated with cyclosporine eye drops (f
