Changes in vestibular-related responses to combined noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation and cerebellar transcranial direct current stimulation.

Vestibular nuclei and cerebellar function comprise vestibular neural networks that control vestibular-related responses. However, the vestibular-related responses to simultaneous stimulation of these regions are unclear. This study aimed to examine whether the combination of noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation (nGVS) and cerebellar transcranial direct current stimulation (ctDCS) using a complex transcranial electrical stimulation device alters vestibular-dominant standing stability and vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) function. The center of foot pressure (COP) sway and VOR of participants (28

Vestibular compensation: the neuro-otologist's best friend.

Why vestibular compensation (VC) after an acute unilateral vestibular loss is the neuro-otologist's best friend is the question at the heart of this paper. The different plasticity mechanisms underlying VC are first reviewed, and the authors present thereafter the dual concept of vestibulo-centric versus distributed learning processes to explain the compensation of deficits resulting from the static versus dynamic vestibular imbalance. The main challenges for the plastic events occurring in the vestibular nuclei (VN) during a post-lesion critical period are neural protection, structural reorga

Effects of 3-acetylpyridine (3-AP) intoxication on the nervous system of mammals and birds.

The authors studied, for the first time, the effects of 3-acetylpyridine administration on the nervous system of birds. The results were compared with those obtained in a mammal not studied yet. The data achieved from the guinea-pig confirmed substantially those got from other mammals, particularly from the rat. They pointed out the constant toxic action caused by the above drug inoculation on the central nervous system. The effects on birds are quite different: 3-AP administration, even at different doses from those employed in mammals, seldom provokes lesions of the central nervous system an

Evaluation of the vestibular system by magnetic resonance angiography.

This report describes the normal arterial patterns of the vestibulocerebellar regions visualized by magnetic resonance angiography. Variations in the vertebrobasilar arterial system are described, limitations in imaging are discussed, and collateral connections within the cerebellar vessels and the circle of Willis are reviewed. Clinical correlations are defined between the vestibular nuclei, the associated intraaxial tracts, and with specific posterior cerebral and brain stem arteries.

Expression of calcitonin gene-related peptide in efferent vestibular system and vestibular nucleus in rats with motion sickness.

UNLABELLED: Motion sickness presents a challenge due to its high incidence and unknown pathogenesis although it is a known fact that a functioning vestibular system is essential for the perception of motion sickness. Recent studies show that the efferent vestibular neurons contain calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP). It is a possibility that the CGRP immunoreactivity (CGRPi) fibers of the efferent vestibular system modulate primary afferent input into the central nervous system; thus, making it likely that CGRP plays a key role in motion sickness. To elucidate the relationship between motio

[Neck-induced vertigo].

Cervicogenic vertigo can be elicited by hyperactivity of spinovestibular afferents and, much more seldomly, by episodic reduction of blood flow in the vertebral artery. The afferent hyperactivity to the vestibular system derives from a "circulus vitiosus" involving false posture, pain, joint dysfunction, which in turn exacerbates the false posture - and so on. This is to be observed in the joints CO/C1 and C1/C2 and their short muscles. This dysfunction of the upper cervical spine can be determined by exact anamnesis, careful investigation of neck mobility, joint play and muscle tension. The c

The effects of vibration on the baseline spike activity of neurons in the superior vestibular nucleus.

The characteristics of the baseline spike activity of neurons in the superior vestibular nucleus of rats were studied after exposure to vibration for five, 10, and 15 days using a computerized method for recording and analyzing interspike intervals. The distributions of neurons in terms of their regularity, their dynamic types, and the modalities of their interspike interval histograms were assessed. In intact animals, the mean spike frequency was 14.0 +/- 1.4 Hz. Changes in the main measures were seen at different durations of exposure to vibration, along with a significant increase in the me

Detection thresholds for object motion and self-motion during vestibular and visuo-oculomotor stimulation.

We compared the detection threshold for object motion with that of self-motion in space in healthy human subjects. Stimuli consisted of horizontal rotations of subjects' body with a fixation spot kept in fixed alignment with their heads (vestibular stimulus), rotation of the fixation spot relative to the stationary subjects (visuo-oculomotor stimulus), and a combination thereof by applying rotations of subjects body relative to the stationary object (sinusoidal oscillations, 0.025-0.4 Hz). Two series of experiments were performed. 1) One group of subjects was instructed to attend to, and to in

Neuronal activity in the ipsilateral vestibular nucleus following unilateral labyrinthectomy in the alert guinea pig.

1. Neuronal activity was investigated in the left superior vestibular nucleus (SVN), lateral vestibular nucleus (LVN), and rostral part of the medial vestibular nucleus (MVN) in the alert guinea pig after a unilateral (left) labyrinthectomy was performed. Vestibular neurons were recorded either immediately (just-postoperative group, n = 6) or 1 wk after labyrinthectomy (1-wk-postoperative group, n = 6) and compared with the activity recorded in intact animals (control group, n = 6). 2. Animals were prepared for extracellular recording of single-unit activity and for eye movement recording (scl

A direct projection from the medial vestibular nucleus to the cervical spinal dorsal horn of the rat, as demonstrated by anterograde and retrograde tracing.

Phaseolus vulgaris leucoagglutinin and wheat germ agglutinin-horseradish peroxidase were iontophoretically injected into different parts of the vestibular nuclear complex (VNC) of the rat. Injections centered into the caudal part of the medial vestibular nucleus revealed a vestibulospinal projection predominantly to the dorsal horn of the cervical spinal cord, besides the expected projection to the intermediate zone (IZ) and ventral horn (VH). While most of the anterogradely labelled fibres could be localized in laminae III to V, some scattered fibres were also seen in laminae I and VI. Lamina

Horseradish peroxidase labeling of the efferent and afferent pathways of the avian tangential vestibular nucleus.

The efferent and afferent pathways of the chick tangential nucleus were studied by using horseradish peroxidase (HRP: Sigma type VI) to label nerve cell bodies and fibers. Depositions of HRP into the tangential nucleus, as well as into the second cervical level of the spinal cord, show that the axons of tangential neurons on leaving the nucleus form an anteriorly coursing tract that passes through the ventrolateral vestibular nucleus without branching and then to the contralateral medial longitudinal fasciculus (MLF). Within the MLF, the tangential axons course posteriorly, forming collaterals

The mossy fiber projection of the nucleus reticularis tegmenti pontis to the flocculus and adjacent ventral paraflocculus in the cat.

The pontine projection of the flocculus and adjacent ventral paraflocculus was investigated with antegrade and retrograde axonal tracer techniques. Injections of horseradish peroxidase into the floccular complex revealed subsets of labeled neurons in the nucleus reticularis tegmenti pontis, the nucleus raphe pontis and the medial lemniscus. Following injections of tritiated leucine in these subsets, the topographical distribution of labeled mossy fibers in the floccular complex was studied. Cells clustered in the central part of the nucleus reticularis tegmenti pontis project to the rostral fl

Auditory dysfunction in stroke.

The auditory and vestibular systems share the same end organ and cranial nerve, yet vestibular signs and symptoms are common with stroke, whereas hearing disturbances are much less frequent. Several reasons would appear to account for this striking dissimilarity. One is that the auditory pathway is less ubiquitous than the vestibular pathways. The likelihood that a stroke involves the auditory pathway is, therefore, less on this basis alone. A second difference, to our knowledge not previously reported, is that the auditory pathway is often spared by the most common strokes. This is because ma

An ipsilateral vestibulothalamic tract adjacent to the medial lemniscus in humans.

We examined 14 patients with acute anteromedial pontomesencephalic infarctions for signs of vestibular and ocular motor dysfunction. In all cases, an isolated ipsilateral deviation of the subjective visual vertical (mean: 4.1, range: 2.7- 6.6) was found without any further signs of vestibular or eye movement disorders like ocular torsion or skew deviation. Distinct lesions in thin-slice brainstem MRI showed an overlap zone in the medial portion of the medial lemniscus. The finding of putative ipsilateral vestibular projections running adjacent to or within the medial lemniscus was subsequently

The assessment of balance and dizziness in the TBI patient.

OBJECTIVES: All degrees of traumatic brain injury (TBI) are associated with balance dysfunction and/or dizziness. The clinician assessing and managing patients with TBI should become familiar with vestibular and non-vestibular causes of dizziness and imbalance, and be able to perform screening tests to determine when referral to a vestibular specialist is warranted. This chapter outlines the clinical pathways to be followed in history-taking, physical examination, and assessment. INTRODUCTION: Dizziness, vertigo, balance dysfunction and gait ataxia can have their origin in the vestibular syst

Betahistine in the treatment of Ménière's disease.

Ménière's disease and related disease of the vestibular system are common and debilitating. Current therapy is multi-modal and includes drug therapy and lifestyle adaptations. Unfortunately many of the drugs used in treatment (particularly those used to control nausea) are sedative and hamper the process of vestibular compensation. Although betahistine (Serc®), BetaSerc®); Solvay Pharmaceuticals) is the mainstay of drug treatment in these illnesses, its efficacy has not, until recently, been evaluated to modern standards. Betahistine is an analog of histamine with weak agonist properties at hi

In vitro phosphorylation of medial vestibular nucleus and prepositus hypoglossi proteins during behavioural recovery from unilateral vestibular deafferentation in the guinea pig.

Unilateral removal of vestibular nerve input to the vestibular nuclei (e.g. by unilateral labyrinthectomy, UL) results in severe ocular motor and postural disorders which disappear over time (vestibular compensation). We investigated whether recovery of ocular motor function is temporally correlated with changes in protein phosphorylation in the medial vestibular nucleus (MVN) and prepositus hypoglossi (PH; MVN/PH) in vitro. Bilateral MVN/PH were dissected from 48 guinea pigs following decapitation at 10 h, 53 h or 2 weeks post-UL, or -sham operation and frozen. Tissue extracts were incubated
