Evaluation of the Blinq Vision Screener in the Detection of Amblyopia and Strabismus in Children.

PURPOSE: Amblyopia is a major health problem with an estimated 2% to 4% of the population affected. Screening combined with corrective measures, such as correction of refractive error and occlusion of the dominant eye, could reduce this prevalence. A new pediatric vision scanner, the blinq (Rebion, Boston, MA), studies the foveolar quality of fixation of each eye during binocular viewing. Based on the initial premise that poor quality foveolar or non-foveolar fixation is indicative of strabismus and, potentially of amblyopia, this study evaluates the effectiveness of the blinq screening device

Childhood blindness prevention in Aotearoa New Zealand.

AIM: While less common than adult blindness, childhood blindness has a significant burden in terms of the total number of "blind years". We aim to determine if there is scope for improved strategies in the prevention of childhood blindness in Aotearoa New Zealand. METHOD: We conducted a review of New Zealand childhood blindness data. RESULTS: In New Zealand, there is a paucity of data on childhood blindness. However, significant scope remains for prevention through optimising maternal health, neonatal care, increasing uptake of immunisations and attendance at vision screening programmes, as

Pediatric teleophthalmology screening: a scoping review of global evidence and implications for Canada.

BACKGROUND: In Canada, nearly 90% of children under 6 have never received a comprehensive eye exam, despite national guidelines recommending at least 1 before age 5. Missed diagnoses of amblyopia, strabismus, and retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) contribute to preventable vision loss and inequities. OBJECTIVE: To synthesize evidence on pediatric teleophthalmology screening, evaluating performance, feasibility, and economic considerations, with attention to relevance in the Canadian context. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted in Ovid MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, and Scopus (2005-2025) for stu

The Slitscope.

Slit lamp biomicroscope is the right hand of an Ophthalmologist. Even though precise, its bulky design and complex working process are limiting constraints, making it difficult for screening at outreach camps, which are an integral part of this field for the purpose of eliminating needless blindness. The torchlight is the main tool used for screening. Recently, the integration of smartphones with instruments and the digitization of slit lamp has been explored, to provide simple and easy hacks. By bringing the slit of the slit lamp to traditional torchlight, we have created "The Slitscope". It

Comparison of photorefraction by Plusoptix A12 and cycloplegic autorefraction in children.

BACKGROUND: Plusoptix photoscreeners are capable of measuring refractive errors of children from 1 meter distance, without cyloplegia. We aimed to compare refractive data obtained from the newest version of Plusoptix (model 12) with cycloplegic autorefraction. METHODS: We examined 111 consecutive children aged 3-7 years first by Plusoptix A12C under manifest condition and subsequently for cycloplegic refraction by Topcon KR-1 tabletop autorefractometer. Sphere, spherical equivalent, cylinder and axis of astigmatism measured by the two methods were analyzed to determine correlation, agreement

[Long-term functional effect of the photo screening in ocular diseases causing amblyopia].

Amblyopia represents the most common cause of insufficient monocular visual acuity in productive age.To begin the treatment in the early childhood is understood as the fundamental anticipation to achieve the optimal result. The research work concerns about the development of screening methods. Our retrospective study was not focused toward the efficacy of the screening itself, but it had to establish, how the participation of the suckling babies in the screening program influences the chance of good vision. The data analyzed in this study were obtained from retrospective review of medical reco

[Effect of exposure time using single landolt-rings on visual acuity in normal individuals and patients with nystagmus].

BACKGROUND: The recommendations of the German Society of Ophthalmology (DOG) concerning the examination of candidates or holders of a driving licence allow a maximum time interval of 1 s for identifying a single Landolt-C for normal individuals as well as for patients with nystagmus. The aim of this study was to determine whether visual acuity decreases with shortening of the exposure time. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We measured the visual acuity of 18 patients with manifest nystagmus and 26 normal individuals with single Landolt-C at exposure times of 10 s, 1 s, 0.25 s and 0.1 s. RESULTS: Visual

Screening for Charles Bonnet syndrome: Should the definition be reconsidered?

PURPOSE: Charles Bonnet syndrome (CBS) is a condition in which individuals with visual impairment (VI) and with no cognitive deficits experience visual hallucinations, typically with no other sensory hallucinations. Although few isolated case reports of CBS from India have been published, the prevalence for CBS in India is largely unknown. The primary aim of this study was to estimate CBS prevalence in patients with vision impairment visiting a tertiary eye care center. METHODS: The study was conducted in two phases. In phase 1, patients with VI, age ≥40 years with presenting visual acuity wo

Diagnostic Validity of Accommodative Tests for Screening Suspected Accommodative Excess in Adolescents.

PURPOSE: Accommodative excess (AE) is characterised by an excessive accommodative response (lead) and impaired ability to relax accommodation, typically accompanied by asthenopic symptoms and reduced visual comfort during near tasks. Although AE is frequently observed in clinical practice, its definition and diagnostic criteria remain inconsistent, and the diagnostic performance of commonly used clinical tests is not well established. This study examined the diagnostic validity of tests evaluating the accommodative response and relaxation to detect suspected AE in a non-clinical adolescent pop

The eye in childhood.

Normal visual development is rapid during the first six months of life and continues through the first decade. Young children are uniquely sensitive to conditions that interfere with vision and visual development. Amblyopia, or functionally defective development of the central visual system, may be caused by common vision problems such as strabismus, uncorrected refractive errors and deprivation secondary to occlusion. Prematurity is especially associated with eye pathology, including retinopathy of prematurity, amblyopia, strabismus and refractive errors. When detected early, amblyopia and ma

Retinopathy of prematurity: A refresher for obstetricians.

Advances in neonatal care improved the survival of many preterm infants, but also increased the incidence of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Numerous risk factors have been associated with the development of ROP, the most important of which are: low birth weight, early gestational age at delivery, and duration of oxygen therapy. Screening premature infants is a critical factor for any prevention and treatment protocol. The Retinopathy of Prematurity Subcommittee of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS) have

Effectiveness of screening preschool children for amblyopia: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Amblyopia and amblyogenic factors like strabismus and refractive errors are the most common vision disorders in children. Although different studies suggest that preschool vision screening is associated with a reduced prevalence rate of amblyopia, the value of these programmes is the subject of a continuing scientific and health policy discussion. Therefore, this systematic review focuses on the question of whether screening for amblyopia in children up to the age of six years leads to better vision outcomes. METHODS: Ten bibliographic databases were searched for randomised contro
