Repetitive visual cortex transcranial random noise stimulation in adults with amblyopia.

We tested the hypothesis that five daily sessions of visual cortex transcranial random noise stimulation would improve contrast sensitivity, crowded and uncrowded visual acuity in adults with amblyopia. Nineteen adults with amblyopia (44.2 ± 14.9 years, 10 female) were randomly allocated to active or sham tRNS of the visual cortex (active, n = 9; sham, n = 10). Sixteen participants completed the study (n = 8 per group). tRNS was delivered for 25 min across five consecutive days. Monocular contrast sensitivity, uncrowded and crowded visual acuity were measured before, during, 5 min and 30 min p

Stimulus-specific regulation of visual oddball differentiation in posterior parietal cortex.

The frequency at which a stimulus is presented determines how it is interpreted. For example, a repeated image may be of less interest than an image that violates the prior sequence. This process involves integration of sensory information and internal representations of stimulus history, functions carried out in higher-order sensory areas such as the posterior parietal cortex (PPC). Thus far, there are few detailed reports investigating the single-neuron mechanisms for processing of stimulus presentation frequency in PPC. To address this gap in knowledge, we recorded PPC activity using 2-phot

Visual Sequences Drive Experience-Dependent Plasticity in Mouse Anterior Cingulate Cortex.

Mechanisms of experience-dependent plasticity have been well characterized in mouse primary visual cortex (V1), including a form of potentiation driven by repeated presentations of a familiar visual sequence ("sequence plasticity"). The prefrontal anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) responds to visual stimuli, yet little is known about if and how visual experience modifies ACC circuits. We find that mouse ACC exhibits sequence plasticity, but in contrast to V1, the plasticity expresses as a change in response timing, rather than a change in response magnitude. Sequence plasticity is absent in ACC,

Dissonant Representations of Visual Space in Prefrontal Cortex during Eye Movements.

We used local field potentials (LFPs) and spikes to investigate representations of visual space in prefrontal cortex and the dynamics of those representations during eye movements. Spatial information contained in LFPs of the frontal eye field (FEF) was differentially distributed across frequencies, with a majority of that information being carried in alpha and high-gamma bands and minimal signal in the low-gamma band. During fixation, spatial information from alpha and high-gamma bands and spiking activity was robust across cortical layers. Receptive fields (RFs) derived from alpha and high-g

Contrast coding in the primary visual cortex depends on temporal contexts.

Contrast response function in the primary visual cortex (V1) has long been described as following a sigmoid curve. However, this is mainly based on measuring neural responses to drifting contrast grating in a stable stimulation, a model that does not consider the effects of motion or length of stimulus presentation. During natural viewing, the visual system can obtain sufficient information for identifying the shapes defined by contrast from a single glance; acquiring greater knowledge of the neuronal response properties to contrast in such a short timescale is necessary to understand the unde

Asynchronous suppression of visual cortex during absence seizures in stargazer mice.

Absence epilepsy is a common childhood disorder featuring frequent cortical spike-wave seizures with a loss of awareness and behavior. Using the calcium indicator GCaMP6 with in vivo 2-photon cellular microscopy and simultaneous electrocorticography, we examined the collective activity profiles of individual neurons and surrounding neuropil across all layers in V1 during spike-wave seizure activity over prolonged periods in stargazer mice. We show that most (~80%) neurons in all cortical layers reduce their activity during seizures, whereas a smaller pool activates or remains neutral. Unexpect

Developmental prosopagnosics have widespread selectivity reductions across category-selective visual cortex.

Developmental prosopagnosia (DP) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by severe deficits with facial identity recognition. It is unclear which cortical areas contribute to face processing deficits in DP, and no previous studies have investigated whether other category-selective areas function normally in DP. To address these issues, we scanned 22 DPs and 27 controls using a dynamic localizer consisting of video clips of faces, scenes, bodies, objects, and scrambled objects. We then analyzed category selectivity, a measure of the tuning of a cortical area to a particular visual catego

Cellular mechanisms of brain state-dependent gain modulation in visual cortex.

Visual cortical neurons fire at higher rates to visual stimuli during locomotion than during immobility, while maintaining orientation selectivity. The mechanisms underlying this change in gain are not understood. We performed whole-cell recordings from layer 2/3 and layer 4 visual cortical excitatory neurons and from parvalbumin-positive and somatostatin-positive inhibitory neurons in mice that were free to rest or run on a spherical treadmill. We found that the membrane potential of all cell types became more depolarized and (with the exception of somatostatin-positive interneurons) less var

Language networks in anophthalmia: maintained hierarchy of processing in 'visual' cortex.

Imaging studies in blind subjects have consistently shown that sensory and cognitive tasks evoke activity in the occipital cortex, which is normally visual. The precise areas involved and degree of activation are dependent upon the cause and age of onset of blindness. Here, we investigated the cortical language network at rest and during an auditory covert naming task in five bilaterally anophthalmic subjects, who have never received visual input. When listening to auditory definitions and covertly retrieving words, these subjects activated lateral occipital cortex bilaterally in addition to t

Visual cortex abnormalities in adults with ADHD: a structural MRI study.

OBJECTIVES: Most structural imaging studies in ADHD have focused on prefronto-striatal circuits. However, findings remained inconsistent while recent reports point to the posterior parietal cortex as an additional target for research. Moreover, although adult ADHD clinically differs from the childhood presentation little is known about the structural correlates of ADHD in adults. The aim of this study was to clarify the involvement of prefronto-striatal and posterior parietal areas in adult ADHD. METHODS: Voxel-based morphometry of high resolution MRI scans was applied to analyze volumetric b

Synchronization in monkey visual cortex analyzed with an information-theoretic measure.

We apply an information-theoretic measure for phase synchrony to local field potentials (LFPs) [corrected] recorded with a multi-electrode array implanted in area V4 of the monkey visual cortex. We show for the first time statistically significant stimulus-dependent synchrony of the visual cortical LFPs and this during different, short time intervals of the response. Furthermore, we could compute waves of synchronous activity over the array and correlate their timing with the stimulus-dependent difference in synchrony [corrected]

Specialized circuits from primary visual cortex to V2 and area MT.

Primary visual cortex recombines inputs from magnocellular (M) and parvocellular (P) streams to create functionally specialized outputs. Understanding these input-output relationships is complicated by the fact that layer 4B, which provides outputs to dorsal visual areas, contains multiple cell types. Using a modified rabies virus that expresses green fluorescent protein, we show that layer 4B neurons projecting to MT are a majority spiny stellate, whereas those projecting to V2 are overwhelmingly pyramidal. Regardless of cell type, MT-projecting neurons have larger cell bodies, more dendritic

Experience-driven axon retraction without binocular imbalance in developing visual cortex.

Refinement of the neural circuit during brain maturation is regulated by experience-driven neural activity. In the mammalian visual cortex, monocular visual deprivation (MD) in the early postnatal life causes a significant loss of cortical responses to a deprived eye and the retraction of input axons serving the deprived eye. A competitive interaction between inputs serving both eyes has been supposed to underlie the effects of MD because the loss of cortical response is much weaker when both eyes are deprived of vision. Also, the input axons do not retract after binocular deprivation. Here, w

Visual field maps and stimulus selectivity in human ventral occipital cortex.

Human visual cortex is organized into distinct visual field maps whose locations and properties provide important information about visual computations. There are two conflicting models of the organization and computational role of ventral occipital visual field maps. We report new functional MRI measurements that test these models. We also present the first coordinated measurements of visual field maps and stimulus responsivity to color, objects and faces in ventral occipital cortex. These measurements support a model that includes a hemifield map, hV4, adjacent to the central field represent

Attentional integration between anatomically distinct stimulus representations in early visual cortex.

Vision often requires attending to, and integrating information from, distant parts of the visual field. However, the neural basis for such long-range integration is not clearly understood. Here, we demonstrate a specific neural signature of attentional integration between stimuli in different parts of the visual field. Using functional MRI, we found that a task requiring the integration of information between two attended but spatially separated stimuli actively modulated the degree of functional integration (in terms of effective connectivity) between their retinotopic representations in vis

Near-infrared spectroscopy of the visual cortex in unilateral optic neuritis.

PURPOSE: To examine the occipital-lobe activation of patients with optic neuritis using near-infrared spectroscopy. DESIGN: Experimental study. METHODS: NIRS was performed on five patients with acute unilateral optic neuritis during monocular visual stimulation. As controls, six normal subjects were also tested in the same manner. RESULTS: In the patients with optic neuritis, the changes in the hemoglobin concentrations (oxyhemoglobin, deoxyhemoglobin, and total hemoglobin) in the occipital lobe were found to be markedly reduced when the clinically affected eyes were stimulated compared wit

Attentional gating in primary visual cortex: a physiological basis for dyslexia.

The visual magnocellular pathway is known to play a central part in visuospatial attention and in directing attention to specific parts of the visual world in serial search. It is proposed that, in the case of reading, this mechanism is trained to perform a sequential gating of visual information coming into the primary visual cortex to enable further orderly processing by the ventral stream. This scheme, taken together with the potential for plasticity between the different afferent channels in the case of a relative impairment of the magnocellular system, can provide some limited rationale f

Functional connectivity between somatosensory and visual cortex in early blind humans.

Crossmodal plasticity occurs when loss of input in one sensory modality leads to reorganization in brain representations of other sensory modalities. In congenital blindness the visual cortex becomes responsive to somatosensory input such as occurs during Braille reading. The route by which somatosensory information reaches the visual cortex is not known. Here, we used repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to probe the connection between primary somatosensory cortex (S1) and early visual cortex (V1 and neighboring areas), combining rTMS with positron emission tomography (PET). Neuronal asymmetries in primary visual cortex of dyslexic and nondyslexic brains.

Dyslexic brains exhibit histologic changes in the magnocellular (magno) cells of the lateral geniculate nucleus, and consistent with these changes, dyslexics demonstrate abnormal visually evoked potentials and brain activation to magno-specific stimuli. The current study was aimed at determining whether these findings were associated with changes in the primary visual cortex with the prediction that magno components of this cortex would be affected. We measured cross-sectional neuronal areas in primary visual cortex (area 17) in dyslexic and nondyslexic autopsy specimens. There was a significa
