[Characterisation of a Collective of Children with Early Language Delay, 'Late Talkers'].

BACKGROUND: By considering their general development, 2-year-old children with delayed speech development (late -talkers, LT) were examined and described with respect to linguistic competence and hearing. METHODS: Initially, 50 monolingual German speaking LT (age: 23-28 months) were recruited. In addition to audiological tests (impedance testing, otoacoustic emissions, reaction audiometry), language development status test was performed (clinical impression during examination, expressive vocabulary: FRAKIS, receptive competence: SETK-2). RESULTS: After exclusion of 10 children with general r

The Road to Language Learning Is Not Entirely Iconic: Iconicity, Neighborhood Density, and Frequency Facilitate Acquisition of Sign Language.

Iconic mappings between words and their meanings are far more prevalent than once estimated and seem to support children's acquisition of new words, spoken or signed. We asked whether iconicity's prevalence in sign language overshadows two other factors known to support the acquisition of spoken vocabulary: neighborhood density (the number of lexical items phonologically similar to the target) and lexical frequency. Using mixed-effects logistic regressions, we reanalyzed 58 parental reports of native-signing deaf children's productive acquisition of 332 signs in American Sign Language (ASL; An

Does cognitive functioning improve with weight restoration? An examination of changes in intelligence quotient scores in adolescents with anorexia nervosa before and after treatment.

Intelligence Quotient (IQ) scores, typically considered stable throughout life, may be impacted by anorexia nervosa (AN). This study investigated whether IQ scores change following treatment in adolescents with AN (N = 110; age = 14.65 ± 2.49 years; 85% female). We analyzed changes in vocabulary, matrix reasoning, and full-scale IQ (FSIQ-2) scores on the Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence, with developmental weight suppression and duration of illness as covariates. Results indicated end of treatment improvements in vocabulary (F(1, 107) = 7.46, p = .01, ηp2 = .07), matrix reasoning (F(

Reduced time in bed and obstructive sleep-disordered breathing in children are associated with cognitive impairment.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine if reduced time in bed as well as the degree of obstructive sleep-disordered breathing predicted the risk of impaired cognitive function in children with adenotonsillar hypertrophy suspected of having obstructive sleep-disordered breathing. DESIGN: We studied 56 children, aged 6 to 12 years, with adenotonsillar hypertrophy referred for suspected obstructive sleep-disordered breathing. Children were given a sleep diary and underwent wrist actigraphy for 6 consecutive days and nights. On day 7, the children were given general cognitive tests

Top-down sensory prediction in the infant brain at 6 months is correlated with language development at 12 and 18 months.

Previous research has suggested that top-down sensory prediction facilitates, and may be necessary for, efficient transmission of information in the brain. Here we related infants' vocabulary development to the top-down sensory prediction indexed by occipital cortex activation to the unexpected absence of a visual stimulus previously paired with an auditory stimulus. The magnitude of the neural response to the unexpected omission of a visual stimulus was assessed at the age of 6 months with functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and vocabulary scores were obtained using the MacArthur-Ba

Feature-driven classification reveals potential comorbid subtypes within childhood apraxia of speech.

BACKGROUND: Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder with heterogeneous communication and other comorbid manifestations. While previous studies have characterized speech deficits associated with CAS, few studies have examined variability in reading and language and/or other developmental comorbidities. We sought to identify comorbid subgroups within CAS that could be clinically relevant as well as genetically distinctive. METHODS: In a group of 31 children with CAS and 8 controls, we performed hierarchical cluster analysis utilizing measures of articulation, vocabula

Motor speech impairment predicts expressive language in minimally verbal, but not low verbal, individuals with autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Developmental motor speech impairment has been suspected, but rarely systematically examined, in low- and minimally verbal individuals with autism spectrum disorder. We aimed to investigate the extent of motor speech impairment in this population and its relation to number of different words produced during a semi-structured language sample. METHODS: Videos of 54 low-verbal and minimally verbal individuals (ages 4;4-18;10) performing portions of a speech praxis test were coded for signs of motor speech impairment (e.g., childhood apraxia of speech). Age, autism spectrum d

Word decoding and picture naming in children with a reading disability.

Poor readers and reading age level matched controls performed a primed picture-naming task and a lexical decision task; their vocabulary performance was also assessed. Picture-naming data showed that poor readers were slower in the repeated prime condition only. This effect could not be explained by differences in vocabulary. Semantically related primes were ineffective compared with the repeated prime condition. Lexical decision data replicated the nonword reading deficit hypothesis: Poor readers were slower, particularly on the pseudowords and nonwords. A separately conducted analysis of the

Anodal HD-tDCS of vmPFC facilitates learning of monosemous and polysemous words: A computational modeling study.

Vocabulary learning requires learners to establish stable mappings between symbols and meanings. Reinforcement learning (RL) principles, through feedback-based value computation, provide a compelling framework supporting such mappings, with the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) playing a key role in value-based learning and decision-making. In this study, we combined artificial pseudowords with a probabilistic reversal learning paradigm and applied high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) in the vmPFC to investigate its role in vocabulary acquisition. Computationa

Exploring sources of reading comprehension difficulties among adolescents in Taiwan: a latent profile analysis with a focus on content-area reading.

With a focus on content-area reading, this study aimed to (a) understand the sources and prevalence of concurrent and specific difficulties in word-level skills, vocabulary, and knowledge among adolescent struggling readers (ASRs) and (b) explore the relations among reading skills, profiles, and reading comprehension. A dual-measure screening approach was used to classify a sample of 492 seventh- and eighth-graders. Among the subgroup of 225 ASRs, five distinct profiles were identified by latent profile analysis. The results confirmed the following: (a) the heterogeneity of reading difficultie

Lexical and grammatical development in children at family risk of dyslexia from early childhood to school entry: a cross-lagged analysis.

The aim of this study was to examine (a) the development of vocabulary and grammar in children with family-risk (FR) of dyslexia and their peers with no such risk (NoFR) between ages 1;6 and 6;0, and (b) whether FR-status exerted an effect on the direction of temporal relationships between these two constructs. Groups were assessed at seven time-points using standardised tests and parental reports. Results indicated that although FR and NoFR children had a similar development in the earlier years, the FR group appeared to perform significantly more poorly on vocabulary at the end of the presch

Differences at 17 months: productive language patterns in infants at familial risk for dyslexia and typically developing infants.

Productive vocabulary composition is investigated in 17-month-old children who are participating in an ongoing longitudinal dyslexia research project in the Netherlands. The project is searching for early precursors for dyslexia and follows a group of children who are genetically at risk for dyslexia and a control group during the first 10 years of their lives. Among other measures, the Dutch version of the MacArthur Communicative Development Inventory: Words and Sentences (N-CDI) is used to investigate early vocabulary development. In this article, the first N-CDI results from the 2 groups of

Prekindergarten and Kindergarten Predictors of Reading Comprehension in Monolingual English and Spanish-English Bilingual Sixth Graders.

PURPOSE: Poor reading comprehension performance by children in the United States is a continuing concern. Early identification and intervention can reduce the number of children with significant reading problems. We documented prekindergarten and kindergarten predictors of Grade 6 reading comprehension for English monolingual and Spanish-English bilingual groups and identified measures available to educators to flag children at risk for future reading comprehension problems. METHOD: In Grade 6, children in the monolingual (n = 88) and bilingual (n = 95) groups completed a reading comprehensio

Large-scale training data enhances silent speech decoding with around-ear EEG.

Objective. Silent speech decoding (SSD) offers a potential communication alternative for individuals with impaired vocalization. However, conventional multi-electrode electroencephalography (EEG) or facial electromyography (EMG) systems require cumbersome preparation and are unsuitable for daily use. This study evaluates the practicality of SSD using a wearable around-ear EEG device, focusing on data scaling, cross-subject transfer, vocabulary extensibility, and online decoding performance.Approach. We collected 72 h of around-ear EEG from 24 healthy participants and one individual with incomp

The effects of deworming on indicators of school performance in Guatemala.

Intestinal helminths are among the most common infections in school-age children. Of 246 children, aged 7-12 years, attending school in rural Guatemala, 91% carried Ascaris lumbricoides and 82% carried Trichuris trichiura. These children were randomly assigned to receive either albendazole or placebo at 0 and 12 weeks in a 'double-blind' study of the effects of deworming on indicators of school performance. Albendazole successfully rid the children of Ascaris but it was less effective against Trichuris. The children's performance in tests of reading and vocabulary were measured at 0 and 24 wee

The effects of orthography, phonology, semantics, and working memory on the reading comprehension of children with and without reading dyslexia.

In this study, we examined to what extent orthographic skills, phonological processing, oral vocabulary, and word memory accounted for variance in reading comprehension among upper-elementary school children with and without dyslexia. The tasks came from the Tests of Dyslexia (TOD). Data from 753 participants (typically developing n = 575; children with dyslexia n = 143) ages 8 to 11 were analyzed with t-tests and multiple regression models. Performance of typically developing children was significantly higher than children with dyslexia on all tasks (p < .001). Typically developing children e

Underlying reading-related skills and abilities among adult learners.

This exploratory study identified underlying skill and ability differences among subgroups of adolescent and young adult struggling readers (N = 290) overall and in relation to a fluency-based instructional grouping method. We used principal axis factoring of participants' scores on 18 measures of reading-related skills and abilities identified in the research literature to identify a smaller set of generally uncorrelated constructs. The four underlying factors of the 18 measures explained 62.7% of the variance. We labeled these factors Encode/Decode (44.5%), Vocabulary (9.5%), Processing Spee

Matthew effects in reading comprehension: myth or reality?

The presence of Matthew effects was tested in students of varying reading, spelling, and vocabulary skills. A cross-sequential design was implemented, following 587 Grade 2 through 4 students across five measurement points (waves) over 2 years. Students were administered standardized assessments of reading, spelling, and vocabulary. Results indicated that the hypothesized fan-spread pattern for Matthew effects was not evident. Low and high ability groups were formed based on 25th and 75th percentile cutoffs on initial measures of spelling, reading accuracy and fluency, vocabulary, and reading

Contribution of executive functions to reading comprehension in bilingual and monolingual 3rd grade children.

Reading comprehension is a complex skill, which relies on language comprehension and reading fluency, as well as higher-order cognitive skills, including executive functions. Bilingual children, who speak a heritage language, have less exposure to the societal language and thus may experience difficulties in reading comprehension, related to reduced linguistic knowledge. Here we examined the possibility that bilingual children may be able to recruit additional cognitive abilities to support their reading comprehension. Thus, we tested third grade children who are either monolingual speakers of
