The Relationship Between Auditory-Perceptual Rating Scales and Objective Voice Measures in Children With Voice Disorders.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to determine concurrent validity of the Grade, Roughness, Breathiness, Asthenia, and Strain (GRBAS) and Consensus Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice (CAPE-V) auditory-perceptual scales in children with voice disorders. A secondary purpose was to determine correlation between the GRBAS, CAPE-V, and objective voice measures. Method GRBAS and CAPE-V ratings and acoustic and aerodynamic measures were collected from the University of Wisconsin-Madison Voice and Swallow Outcomes Database. Correlations between CAPE-V and GRBAS ratings were calculated for ove

The 2016 G. Paul Moore Lecture: Lessons in Voice Rehabilitation: Journal of Voice and Clinical Practice.

This Paul Moore Lecture honors the contributions made by authors to the Journal of Voice during a period of 30 years, from 1987. Fifty articles were selected and included under the following five topics: (1) normalcy of the larynx and voice; (2) the clinical speech-language pathologist's evaluation; (3) the patient's perspective; (4) the core of vocal rehabilitation; and (5) behavioral versus organic dysphonias. The analysis reflects a vivid landscape of the specific area and significant advances in knowledge. It also shows the valuable interdependence between science and clinical practice. Th

The Norwegian Voice Handicap Index (VHI-N) patient scores are dependent on voice-related disease group.

The aim of this study is to determine to what extent the Voice Handicap Index-Norwegian (VHI-N) is scored depending on specific laryngological disease. In a multi-center study, 126 healthy subjects and 355 patients with different voice-related diseases answered the VHI-N. The VHI-N scores showed high Cronbach's alpha. Analyses of variance were performed with VHI-N dependent and specific voice-related disease as independent variable, and showed highly significant dependence by group allocation (F(7,461) = 28.0; p < 0.001). When studying post hoc analyses secondary to this ANOVA analysis, we hav

Collaboration and conquest: MTD as viewed by voice teacher (singing voice specialist) and speech-language pathologist.

This study was designed as a qualitative case study to demonstrate the process of diagnosis and treatment between a voice team to manage a singer diagnosed with muscular tension dysphonia (MTD). Traditionally, literature suggests that MTD is challenging to treat and little in the literature directly addresses singers with MTD. Data collected included initial medical screening with laryngologist, referral to speech-language pathologist (SLP) specializing in voice disorders among singers, and adjunctive voice training with voice teacher trained in vocology (singing voice specialist or SVS). Changes after voice therapy in objective and subjective voice measurements of pediatric patients with vocal nodules.

The aim of this study was to analyze the efficiency of the voice therapy in children with vocal nodules by using the acoustic analysis and subjective assessment. Thirty-nine patients with vocal fold nodules, aged between 7 and 14, were included in the study. Each subject had voice therapy led by an experienced voice therapist once a week. All diagnostic and follow-up workouts were performed before the voice therapy and after the third or the sixth month. Transoral and/or transnasal videostroboscopic examination and acoustic analysis were achieved using multi-dimensional voice program (MDVP) an

Botulinum neurotoxin for management of intractable central leakage through a voice prosthesis in surgical voice restoration.

Rehabilitation of voice and speech after total laryngectomy has become established practice in recent years. A voice prosthesis is placed within a surgically produced fistula between the trachea and upper oesophagus and acts as a one way valve, allowing passage of pulmonary air from the trachea into the oesophagus and preventing aspiration of food and fluid from the oesophagus into the trachea. Persistent leakage through or around these prostheses is a recognized complication, the aetiology of which can vary widely, from mechanical issues with the prostheses themselves to anatomical and physio

The Nijdam voice prosthesis: a self-retaining valveless voice prosthesis for vocal rehabilitation after total laryngectomy.

Voice prosthesis-assisted speech rehabilitation after total laryngectomy has proven to be successful in the majority of patients and exceeds the results of traditional oesophageal speech. Nevertheless 10-30% failure rates are still reported. In part this is due to prosthesis-related problems, in particular ingrowth of Candida species in the valve-bearing parts of the devices. A new indwelling, low-resistance and valveless voice prosthesis is described; the Nijdam voice prosthesis. The device has an average device lifetime of 19 weeks which appears to be superior to other indwelling voice prost

Relations between voice range profiles and physiological and perceptual voice characteristics in ten-year-old children.

Pitch and intensity range of 60 children were recorded and plotted in voice range profiles (VRPs). Different aspects were investigated: minimum phonation threshold, pitch range, and maximum dynamic range. Vocal fold status was determined via laryngoscopic examination. Ten percent of the children had vocal nodules, 23% glottal chinks. Seven voice experts listened to the voices recorded on two separate occasions and rated their properties along 16 parameters including hoarseness. Fourteen percent were rated as hoarse on both recordings and were thus classified as being chronically hoarse. Depart

The Effects of COVID-19 on Voice.

The COVID-19 pandemic had profound effects on vocal health, impacting both infected individuals, professional voice users and essential workers. The objective of this paper was to explore the multifaceted nature of dysphonia associated with COVID-19, arising from both direct and indirect consequences of the pandemic. Prevalence rates of dysphonia among COVID-19 patients range widely from 25% to 79%, with significant underreporting. Factors contributing to voice changes include laryngeal inflammation, respiratory function impairment, treatment-related interventions, and increased vocal strain f

Complementary and Integrative Medicine and the Voice.

Dysphonia is a ubiquitous problem impacting a broad range of people. As communication is central to the human experience, any perturbation of the voice can be frustrating for the patient and the physician. Nutritional, psychological, and physical means of preventing and treating hoarseness have been used by humans since the beginning of written record. Today, we use a selection of these approaches, along with traditional medicine, to alleviate problems of the vocal tract.

Voice phenomenology as a mirror of the past.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic mechanisms are theorised to contribute to voice-hearing in people with psychosis and a history of trauma. Phenomenological links between trauma and voices support this hypothesis, as they suggest post-traumatic processes contribute to the content of, and relationships with, voices. However, research has included small samples and lacked theory-based comprehensive assessments. METHOD: In people with distressing voices (n = 73) who experienced trauma prior to voice-hearing, trauma-voice links were assessed both independently and dependently (descriptions were presente

An unusual case of hoarseness of voice.

Amyloidosis is a condition wherein there is an over-expression of specific proteins culminating in the extracellular deposition of insoluble beta pleated sheets of fibres. These deposits disrupt function of the target organ. Its aetiology remains unknown. Primary Amyloidosis localized to the trachea and bronchus is a rare entity. It produces tumour like lesion in the tracheo-bronchial tree. We hereby discuss a patient who presented with persistent hoarseness of voice who was referred to a tertiary care centre to rule out malignancy.

The potential effects of rhinoplasty on voice.

BACKGROUND: Rhinoplasty is one of the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures in Iran. Surgery on the vocal tract can potentially change the voice characteristics. To the best of the authors' knowledge, no study has described voice changes after rhinoplasty, and the results of this study may help physicians to be aware of potential voice alterations following rhinoplasty. METHODS: The authors selected 27 patients for this study. Patients completed Voice Handicap Index questionnaires, and the authors performed perceptual and acoustic analyses before and 5 months after rhinoplasty. RESULTS:

[Influence of resistance to voices on depression].

OBJECTIVE: Beliefs about voices and reactions to voices have been proposed as important variables influencing the course of depression in schizophrenia. Consequences of auditory hallucinations are different according to identity, goals, omnipotence, omniscience, and meanings attributed to voices by the client. Ten to 15 % of the general population experience auditory hallucinations during lifetime without any distress or need for medical care. In addition, neither frequency of voices, nor their topography, influence the emotional consequences of auditory hallucinations experiences, but the rel

Morphological aspects of the euphonic voice.

The high quality of a euphonic voice is the result of complex interactions between many organs and systems. Vibrating vocal folds play a crucial role in this process. Their physiological motion is conditioned by the presence of the layered structure of laryngeal mucosa. In this study, we assessed the degree of dysphonia according to the Union of European Phoniatrics (UEP) scale. Videoendoscopy (VLS) and videostroboscopic (VLSS) examination of the larynx was used to visualize the vibration of the vocal folds. Morphological assessment of the inter-membranous part of the vocal fold mucosa was car

Dyscravia: voicing substitution dysgraphia.

We report a new type of dysgraphia, which we term dyscravia. The main error type in dyscravia is substitution of the target letter with a letter that differs only with respect to the voicing feature, such as writing "coat" for "goat", and "vagd" for "fact". Two Hebrew-speaking individuals with acquired dyscravia are reported, TG, a man aged 31, and BG, a woman aged 66. Both had surface dysgraphia in addition to their dyscravia. To describe dyscravia in detail, and to explore the rate and types of errors made in spelling, we administered tests of writing to dictation, written naming, and oral s
