Voice-Hearing and Personification: Characterizing Social Qualities of Auditory Verbal Hallucinations in Early Psychosis.

Recent therapeutic approaches to auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH) exploit the person-like qualities of voices. Little is known, however, about how, why, and when AVH become personified. We aimed to investigate personification in individuals' early voice-hearing experiences. We invited Early Intervention in Psychosis (EIP) service users aged 16-65 to participate in a semistructured interview on AVH phenomenology. Forty voice-hearers (M = 114.13 days in EIP) were recruited through 2 National Health Service trusts in northern England. We used content and thematic analysis to code the intervie

Evaluation of Voice Quality in Patients With Vocal Fold Polyps: The Size of a Polyp Matters or Does it?

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the correlation between morphological features of vocal fold polyps (VFPs) and subjective/objective voice parameters. METHODS: Perceptual evaluations, aerodynamic and acoustic tests were performed on 47 patients with VFPs. Still images were captured from video and the morphological features associated with the size of VFP were quantified. To reveal the correlation between size-related morphological features (length of polyp base, the ratio of polyp base to vocal fold length, glottal gap area) and objective/subjective parameters of voice, Pearson's an

Respiratory Tract Infections and Voice Quality in 4-Year-old Children in the STEPS Study.

OBJECTIVES: Health-related factors are part of the multifactorial background of dysphonia in children. Respiratory tract infections affect the same systems and structures that are used for voice production. The purpose of this study was to investigate if the number of respiratory tract infections or the viral etiology were significant predictors for a more hoarse voice quality. METHODS: The participants were 4-year-old children who participated in the multidisciplinary STEPS study (Steps to the Healthy Development and Well-being of Children) where they were followed up from pregnancy or birth

Quality of Life and Voice Changes After a Single Injection in Patients With ADSD Over Time.

INTRODUCTION: Adductor spasmodic dysphonia (ADSD) is one of the most disabling voice disorders with no permanent cure. Patients with ADSD suffer from poor voice quality and repeated interruption of phonation that leads to limitations in daily communication. Botox (BT) injection, considered the gold standard treatment for ADSD, reduces the amount of voice breaks and improves voice quality for a limited period. In this study, patients with ADSD were followed after a single BT injection to track the changes in QOL and perceptual voice quality over a 6-month period. METHOD: This is a prospective

Relationship between quality of life instruments and phonatory function in tracheoesophageal speech with voice prosthesis.

BACKGROUND: The use of tracheoesophageal speech with voice prosthesis (T-E speech) after total laryngectomy has increased recently as a method of vocalization following laryngeal cancer. Previous research has not investigated the relationship between quality of life (QOL) and phonatory function in those using T-E speech. This study aimed to demonstrate the relationship between phonatory function and both comprehensive health-related QOL and QOL related to speech in people using T-E speech. METHODS: The subjects of the study were 20 male patients using T-E speech after total laryngectomy. At a

Pediatric Voice-Related Quality of Life: findings in healthy children and in common laryngeal disorders.

OBJECTIVES: Although several instruments have been validated to assess voice quality, the incidence and degree of impairment in normal, healthy children has not been widely reported. It is hypothesized that healthy children outside a medical setting do not demonstrate impairment as measured by the Pediatric Voice-Related Quality of Life (PVRQOL) instrument; in contrast, patients with vocal fold paralysis (VFP), vocal nodules (VNs), and paradoxical vocal fold dysfunction (PVFD) have significant impairment as compared to control populations. METHODS: The PVRQOL was measured prospectively in chi

[Assessing the quality of the speaking voice after therapy of T1 and T2 vocal cord cancers].

All studies which analysed voice quality after T1 and T2 glottic cancer employed sustained vowels for evaluation. Sustained vowels can often be produced more clearly than expected in a severe degree of hoarseness in running speech. In this investigation voice quality was analysed by measuring the signal-to-noise-ratio (SNRc) in running speech. For evaluation these data were correlated to the scores from an auditive evaluation and from a clinical examination of the larynx considering functional parameters. 39 patients were examined after different therapies (primary radiation, chordectomy, fron

Voice-Related Quality of Life in Idiopathic Subglottic Stenosis: Effect of Serial Intralesional Steroid Injections.

OBJECTIVES: Serial intralesional steroid injection (SILSI) is an emerging treatment for idiopathic subglottic stenosis (ISGS), providing improvement in both subjective symptoms and objective airflow parameters. Little is known about how this airway remodeling affects the voice. This project analyzes subjective voice changes after SILSI and correlates these with airflow parameters. METHODS: An ISGS database containing voice-related quality of life (V-RQOL) and spirometry (peak expiratory flow percentage [%PEF]) was retrospectively queried. Included were ISGS patients from 2009 to 2019 who had

Crowdsourced Perceptual Ratings of Voice Quality in People With Parkinson's Disease Before and After Intensive Voice and Articulation Therapies: Secondary Outcome of a Randomized Controlled Trial.

PURPOSE: Limited research has examined the suitability of crowdsourced ratings to measure treatment effects in speakers with Parkinson's disease (PD), particularly for constructs such as voice quality. This study obtained measures of reliability and validity for crowdsourced listeners' ratings of voice quality in speech samples from a published study. We also investigated whether aggregated listener ratings would replicate the original study's findings of treatment effects based on the Acoustic Voice Quality Index (AVQI) measure. METHOD: This study reports a secondary outcome measure of a ran

The Acoustic Voice Quality Index (AVQI) in People with Parkinson's Disease Before and After Intensive Voice and Articulation Therapies: Secondary Outcome of a Randomized Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVES: The majority of individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) experience voice and speech problems during the course of the disease. Despite the importance of voice quality in communication and the documented disordered voice quality in PD, few studies have explored the effects of speech treatment on this variable. STUDY DESIGN/METHODS: A parallel arm, unblinded randomized controlled trial (RCT) was conducted with two active comparators, LSVT LOUD (n = 23) and LSVT ARTIC (n = 20), and an inactive comparator group of untreated individuals with PD (n = 22). A group of 20 healthy adults

Investigating the Effects of Amateur Singing on Speaking Voice Quality, Function, and Motor Control Across Adulthood.

OBJECTIVES: Singing is an accessible activity that may promote vocal health, including vocal function, quality, and motor control. However, evidence remains limited and heterogeneous, as some studies have shown an association between singing practice and dysphonia-related complaints in certain populations. This study investigated whether amateur singing practice influences adult speaking voice outcomes related to function, quality, and motor control, and whether it may moderate age-related vocal changes. METHODS: Participants were 143 French-speaking adults (20-98 years; 72 singers, 71 non-si
