VoiceRelease is a progressively structured treatment system that aims to release the voice through muscle tension reduction by manual therapy, thereby facilitating healthy voice production. The VoiceRelease treatment should closely interact with functional voice training and should therefore be carried out by the speech-language therapist (SLT). The aim of this paper is not to present the treatment in detail, but to describe the benefits of using the techniques in the voice clinic and to argue that laryngeal manual therapy complements the skills of the SLT and that it in a natural and integrat

PURPOSE: To assess the influence of the listener experience, measurement scales and the type of speech task on the auditory-perceptual evaluation of the overall severity (OS) of voice deviation and the predominant type of voice (rough, breathy or strain).
METHODS: 22 listeners, divided into four groups participated in the study: speech-language pathologist specialized in voice (SLP-V), SLP non specialized in voice (SLP-NV), graduate students with auditory-perceptual analysis training (GS-T), and graduate students without auditory-perceptual analysis training (GS-U). The subjects rated the OS

(1) Objective: Teaching is a particularly voice-demanding occupation. Voice training provided during teachers' education is often insufficient and thus teachers are at risk of developing voice disorders. Vocal demands during teaching are not only characterized by speaking for long durations but also by speaking in noisy environments. This provokes the so-called Lombard effect, which intuitively leads to an increase in voice intensity, pitch and phonation time in laboratory studies. However, this effect has not been thoroughly investigated in realistic teaching scenarios. (2) Methods: This stud

Many voice pedagogy practices revolve around the notion of controlling airflow and lung volumes and focus heavily on the concepts of breath support and breath control. Despite this emphasis, the effects of increased respiratory muscle strength on airflow and phonation patterns in trained singers remain unknown. This study addressed whether singers could increase respiratory muscle strength with progressive threshold training and whether respiratory muscle strength increases had measurable effect on voice outcomes. A single-subject design was used to answer the research questions. Improved brea

Acoustic analysis using signal processing tools can be used to extract voice features to distinguish whether a voice is pathological or healthy. The proposed work uses spectrogram of voice recordings from a voice database as the input to a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) for automatic feature extraction and classification of disordered and normal voice. The novel classifier achieved 88.5%, 66.2% and 77.0% accuracy on training, validation and testing data set respectively on 482 normal and 482 organic dysphonia speech files. It reveals that the proposed novel algorithm on the Saarbruecken Vo

BACKGROUND: Meta-therapy (MT) is a powerful dialogue-based element of voice therapy that scaffolds patients' cognitive models of treatment. MT dialogues have not historically been taught in an explicit manner, and substantial variability in identifying MT exists within and across clinicians. This low reliability is problematic for empirical research and educational transfer. Harnessing contemporary natural language processing technologies to stress test the concept of MT and its clinical instances may enhance our theoretical and empirical grasp of the construct.
METHOD: To capture crucial the

Diagnosis and treatment of the immobile or hypomobile vocal fold are challenging for the otolaryngologist. True paralysis and paresis result from vocal fold denervation secondary to injury to the laryngeal or vagus nerve. Vocal fold paresis or paralysis may be unilateral or bilateral, central or peripheral, and it may involve the recurrent laryngeal nerve, superior laryngeal nerve, or both. The physician's first responsibility in any case of vocal fold paresis or paralysis is to confirm the diagnosis and be certain that the laryngeal motion impairment is not caused by arytenoid cartilage dislo

Voice therapy with the aim of raising a client's fundamental frequency is a common practice in the reassignment of male-to-female transsexuals. In female-to-male transsexuals on the other hand voice therapy is usually not considered since the administration of androgens is assumed automatically to change the voice in the direction of the desired sex. The present study examined whether the voice change in female-to-male transsexuals is indeed as straightforward as it is assumed. Results from a sample survey involving 16 female-to-male transsexuals and longitudinal data from two clients suggest

A look at the many disciplines working with voice over the past 50 years is provided from the perspective of a speech-language pathologist (SLP). Some of the earliest collaborations between medicine and speech-language pathology were seen in the management of cleft palate and velopharyngeal inadequacy problems and observed, also, in laryngectomee rehabilitation. The earlier concern of the SLP for the emotional and psychological aspects of patients with voice disorders appeared replaced with the rise of symptomatic therapy. Dramatic improvement in instrumentation assisted by computer analyses i

INTRODUCTION: SPEAK OUT! with The LOUD Crowd is a standardized speech therapy program typically consisting of 12 one-on-one treatments and ongoing weekly group maintenance sessions for patients with dysarthria due to Parkinson's disease (PD). It is based upon the hypothesis that increased attention to speech, which is a goal-directed motor activity, may compensate for the impairment in automatic sequential motor behaviors often demonstrated in patients with PD. We present results on the 1-year response to treatment.
METHODS: Forty individuals with idiopathic PD received SPEAK OUT! delivered i

BACKGROUND: Although dysphonia is less prevalent than dysphagia following cerebrovascular accidents, dysphonia does contribute to the burden of disease resulting from stroke. Strengthening muscles of the larynx and respiratory tract through respiratory muscle training (RMT) has proven effective in improving voice after neurological insult. However, approaches to strengthen only the expiratory muscle groups (EMST) dominate the clinical study literature, with variable outcomes. By focusing on exhalation, the contribution of inspiratory muscles to phonation may have been overlooked. This study in

Scarring of the vocal folds leads to a deterioration of the highly complex microstructure with consecutively impaired vibratory pattern and glottic insufficiency. The resulting dysphonia is predominantly characterized by a reduced vocal capacity. Despite considerable progress in the understanding of the underlying pathophysiology, treatment of scarred vocal folds is still an unresolved chapter in laryngology and phonosurgery. Decisive for successful treatment is an individual, multidimensional concept that comprises the whole armamentarium of surgical and nonsurgical (e.g. voice therapy) modal

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of intensive voice therapy on Cantonese speakers with Parkinson's disease. The effect of the treatment on lexical tone was of particular interest. Four Cantonese speakers with idiopathic Parkinson's disease received treatment based on the principles of Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT). Outcome measures included perceptual measures and acoustic correlates of loudness, pitch, intonation, and tone (only intonation and tone are detailed in this study). All four participants demonstrated an increase in loudness, an increase in pitch and pitch

Today clinical evaluation of the presence and extent of dysphonia is still essentially based on subjective-perceptive criteria. The lack of objectivity and the one-sidedness of such an approach reinforces the desire for a quantitative, objective determination of dysphonia which could aid in making an modern, unequivocal evaluation of the presence, extent and variations in time of this disorder both upon onset and after treatment. The purpose of the present research was to determine the reliability, possibilities and limitations of an objective, parametric procedure to evaluate both the normal

Primary hyperplasia of the ventricular cords can produce voice disturbance or can be a secondary change caused by a primary voice disorder. Primary hyperplasia, besides inflammation or tumour, arises in aging people by a metaplastic process of the glandular epithelium of the ventricular cords. These lesions are called "grandular-cystic ventricular cord hyperplasias". Secondary hyperplasias are mainly of a fibrous nature. These "fibrous-vicarious hyperplasias" arise in hyperkinetic functional voice disorders, in pareses or in some cases of extensive chronic hyperplastic or oedematous laryngitis
