Predators and the public trust.

Many democratic governments recognize a duty to conserve environmental resources, including wild animals, as a public trust for current and future citizens. These public trust principles have informed two centuries of U.S.A. Supreme Court decisions and environmental laws worldwide. Nevertheless numerous populations of large-bodied, mammalian carnivores (predators) were eradicated in the 20th century. Environmental movements and strict legal protections have fostered predator recoveries across the U.S.A. and Europe since the 1970s. Now subnational jurisdictions are regaining management authorit

Aujeszky's Disease in a Grey Wolf (Canis lupus) in Poland.

Aujeszky's disease (AD), caused by suid herpesvirus 1 (pseudorabies virus, PRV), is a highly contagious infection primarily affecting swine, with wild boars serving as an important reservoir in Europe. Spillover infections in non-suid species, including carnivores, are rare but typically fatal and of epidemiological concern. This study presents the first case of AD in a grey wolf (Canis lupus) in Central Europe with genomic characterization. The 8-month-old wolf was found in the Carpathians (SE Poland), moribund with acute neurological signs, and euthanized for animal welfare reasons. Necropsy

A crack in the armor: Wolf isotopic response manifesting as cutaneous lupus.

Wolf isotopic response represents the development of skin lesions of one particular morphology occurring at the same site as another morphologically distinct and unrelated skin lesion. Cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE) is an autoimmune connective tissue disorder encompassing a wide range of phenotypes that may be associated with systemic involvement. Although CLE is a well-described entity with a broad spectrum, the occurrence of lesions manifesting as an isotopic response is rare. We present a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus who developed CLE in a dermatomal distribution following

[The epidemiological-epizootiological subdivision of the nosogeographic range of trichinosis].

The prevalence of trichinosis was analyzed among human beings and animals in Moscow Province over 50 years (1946-1996). A total of 7022 domestic, synanthropic, and wild carnivorous animals were incompletely helminthologically dissected. Enzyme immunoassay revealed diagnostic Trichinella antigen antibody titers in 45.4% of 544 examinees during outbreaks and at their intervals, as well as in 0.58% of domestic pigs of different property forms. Trichinella larvae were found in domestic pigs (0.13%), dogs (12.3%), cats (12.9%), hunting and fur-bearing (wild boars (2.0%), wolves (38.8%), red foxes (

Detection of dog filariasis in Marajo Island, Brazil by classical and molecular methods.

Canine filariasis in domestic and wild dogs, foxes, and wolves is caused by several species of filarids. Although these filarial species inhabit different loci in the vertebrate definitive hosts, they generally release microfilariae into the bloodstream. Data about filarial infection in dogs in Brazil, especially on the Marajo Island, is scarce. For this reason, we conducted an analysis of 188 domestic dogs within two Marajo Island municipalities. The overall prevalence of microfilaremic was 32.45%; taken by blood smear and modified Knott's method. No significant difference of positivity betwe

Epidemiology and diagnosis of echinococcosis in Canada.

TWO SPECIES OF ECHINOCOCCUS OCCUR IN CANADA: (1) E. multilocularis and (2) E. granulosus. E. multilocularis, originating in the Arctic, is spreading southwards and has reached Saskatchewan and the Dakotas. The original hosts are foxes but dogs and cats are alternatives. The larvae occur in field mice as multilocular microcysts containing numerous protoscolices, but in man the cysts are alveolar and sterile and resemble both in histology and growth a cholangiocellular carcinoma of the liver with metastases. Signs and symptoms are chronic and poorly defined. Diagnosis is difficult. Test antigens

First report of Trichinella chanchalensis, and detection of foreign Trichinella spiralis, in wildlife in Alaska.

BACKGROUND: Members of the genus Trichinella are muscle-dwelling zoonotic parasites of global importance for public health, animal husbandry, and trade. Trichinella chanchalensis (T13) is the newest species in the genus, first described in the Yukon and the Northwest Territories, for which the geographical distribution remains unknown due to limitations of the gold standard test for genotyping (multiplex polymerase chain reaction [PCR]). Our primary objective was to determine whether T. chanchalensis was present in Alaska, using a new molecular method that enables the description of the preval

Social living mitigates the costs of a chronic illness in a cooperative carnivore.

Infection risk is assumed to increase with social group size, and thus be a cost of group living. We assess infection risk and costs with respect to group size using data from an epidemic of sarcoptic mange (Sarcoptes scabiei) among grey wolves (Canis lupus). We demonstrate that group size does not predict infection risk and that individual costs of infection, in terms of reduced survival, can be entirely offset by having sufficient numbers of pack-mates. Infected individuals experience increased mortality hazards with increasing proportions of infected pack-mates, but healthy individuals rema

[A new approach to postexposure treatment of rabies by complex of immuno- and chemotherapy in belarus].

A method for preventive treatment of rabies with a complex of immuno- and chemotherapeutics was developed. Rifampicin was used a an etiotropic drug. In the experiments on laboratory animals infected with fixed and street strains of rabies virus it was shown to prolong the incubation period and to increase the survival rate. The protective mechanisms of rifampicin against rabies should be associated with inhibition of RNA transcription, as well as immunomodulating function of macrophages, dendritic cells, B- and T-cells. Since 1992, after the approval of the Ministry of Health of Belarus rifamp

Antibody persistence, 32 years after post-exposure prophylaxis with human diploid cell rabies vaccine (HDCV).

In 1975-1976 forty-five persons severely bitten by rabid wolves and dogs in Iran were treated successfully against rabies with HDCV. In this study contact was made with 26 of 45 above persons, 32 years after their initial treatment and all had rabies neutralizing antibody ranging from 0.3 to 2.69 IU/ml of serum. Of the 26 persons, 17 had received a booster dose of HDCV, 28 years ago and the remaining 9 persons, who had not received any booster since the initial treatment, were given one booster dose of HDCV. All 9 of these patients developed an anamnestic response after their booster inoculati

Canine parvovirus and pseudorabies virus coinfection as a cause of death in a wolf (Canis lupus) from southern Italy.

Pseudorabies virus (PRV) or suid herpesvirus 1 (SHV-1) is the causative agent of Aujeszky's disease, a highly contagious viral infection which causes neurological fatal illness in mammals other than suids. Here we report a case of a young wolf (Canis lupus) of around 2 years found dead by a hunter in the province of Avellino, Campania Region. Necropsy showed pathological findings consistent with encephalitis and gastroenteritis. Organs were analysed by microbiological and molecular investigations following standard procedures to ascertain the possible cause of death. Real-time PCR revealed the

Echinococcus granulosus Sensu Stricto and Echinococcus multilocularis in a Gray Wolf (Canis lupus) in Turkey: Further Evidence for Increased Risk of Alveolar Echinococcosis in Urban Areas.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to identify Echinococcus species by morphological and molecular means. METHODS: A dead gray wolf (Canis lupus) was found near Erzurum province and brought to the parasitology laboratory. Sedimentation and counting technique (SCT) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis were conducted. RESULTS: The SCT implications indicated that the wolf had a substantial worm burden (62,720 and 49,280 parasites) due to a co-infection of E. granulosus s.l. and E. multilocularis. Genus/species-specific PCR was used to analyze DNA extracted from adult worms and confirm

Near-complete genome of SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant of concern identified in a symptomatic dog (Canis lupus familiaris) in Botswana.

We sought to investigate whether SARS-CoV-2 was present, and to perform full-length genomic sequencing, in a 5-year-old male crossbreed dog from Gaborone, Botswana that presented overt clinical signs (flu-like symptoms, dry hacking cough and mild dyspnoea). It was only sampled a posteriori, because three adult owners were diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Next-generation sequencing based on Oxford Nanopore Technology (ONT) was performed on amplicons that were generated using a reverse transcriptase real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) of confirmed positive SARS-CoV-2 nasopharyngeal

First report of a pseudorabies-virus-infected wolf (Canis lupus) in China.

We provide the first report of a wolf infected with pseudorabies virus (PRV) in China. We observed the clinical symptoms and also dissected tissue samples from the wolf. The samples were ground under sterile conditions and injected subcutaneously into the necks of rabbits, which subsequently developed intense pruritus symptoms and died. The PRV strain from the wolf was isolated in porcine kidney (PK)-15 cells and was specifically recognized by pig PRV antibody-positive serum, as shown by indirect immunofluorescence. Tissues from the dead wolf and rabbits were examined by polymerase chain react

Low-coverage vaccination strategies for the conservation of endangered species.

The conventional objective of vaccination programmes is to eliminate infection by reducing the reproduction number of an infectious agent to less than one, which generally requires vaccination of the majority of individuals. In populations of endangered wildlife, the intervention required to deliver such coverage can be undesirable and impractical; however, endangered populations are increasingly threatened by outbreaks of infectious disease for which effective vaccines exist. As an alternative, wildlife epidemiologists could adopt a vaccination strategy that protects a population from the con

Cecal inversion and subsequent colocolic intussusception in a red wolf (Canis rufus gregoryi).

A 2-yr-old female red wolf (Canis rufus gregoryi) presented with weight loss and diarrhea. Abnormal clinical pathology included low serum calcium, sodium, chloride, globulin, and albumin levels. Differential diagnosis included infectious enteritis, intestinal parasitism, inflammatory bowel disease, hepatic or renal disease, and malnutrition. The wolf was treated empirically, but did not improve. A second examination revealed persistent poor musculature and stool quality. Abdominal palpation revealed a firm mass; contrast radiography confirmed an intussusception. Exploratory laparotomy revealed

Morphological and Immunohistochemical Description of a Splenic Haemangioma in a Captive European Wolf (Canis lupus lupus) and a Review of the Current Literature.

Neoplastic diseases are rarely described in wild carnivores; only a few reports have been published on this topic. Here, we describe the histological and immunohistochemical features of a haemangioma in the spleen of a grey wolf (Canis lupus lupus) and we compare the results with the dog (Canis lupus familiaris). Additionally, we list the different publications found in the literature with neoplastic lesions in wolves. Our results show similar immunohistochemical features to dogs, in which neoplastic cells express Vimentin, von Willebrand factor, alpha smooth muscle actin antibody, vascular en

A Case of Subconjunctival Dirofilariasis in Bulgaria.

We report a case of subconjunctival invasion of Dirofilaria repens in a woman from Southern Bulgaria. Dirofilariasis is an extremely rare parasitic disease for Bulgaria. It occurs as an endemic parasitosis in the Mediterranean countries. It is caused by helminths of the genus Dirofilaria, which are parasites in dogs, cats, foxes, wolves - the final hosts of the parasite. It may very rarely occur in humans, the infection triggered by a bite of bloodsucking mosquitoes, which are the intermediate hosts of Dirofilaria. The clinical forms of dirofilariasis in humans are subcutaneous, pulmonary and

High prevalence of Eucoleus boehmi (syn. Capillaria boehmi) in foxes from western Austria.

Eucoleus boehmi (syn. Capillaria boehmi) is a canine trichuroid nematode affecting the upper respiratory airways (i.e., nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses) of dogs, foxes, and wolves. In the past few years, reports in dogs and wild canids have increased from across Europe, but data on its occurrence and distribution in Austria is scanty. A total of 47 red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) from the two westernmost provinces (Tyrol and Vorarlberg) of Austria were therefore examined for the presence of E. boehmi at necropsy. Eggs and adult nematodes were identified morphologically and molecularly (cox1) as E
