Some conditions that predispose to ventilatory failure increase the work of breathing (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [COPD], obesity, kyphoscoliosis), whereas others cause severe respiratory muscle weakness. Specific reasons for muscle weakness include critical illness (electrolyte imbalance, acidemia, shock, sepsis), chronic illness (poor nutrition, cachexia), and neuromuscular diseases. Inspiratory muscle weakness from mechanical disadvantage to the diaphragm is characteristic of asthma and COPD. The increased work of breathing combined with muscle weakness increases the pressure nee

The recent advances in our understanding of breathing in sleep include an evolution in the selection and surgical therapy of patients with the sleep apnea syndrome. Recent work suggests that shorter polysomnographic studies may be adequate for diagnostic purposes in many sleep apnea patients. It is now clear that central apnea may occur, paradoxically, in patients with either very blunted chemical drives to breathe or increased drives to breathe.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Presbyphonia has long been framed as a laryngeal disorder driven by presbylaryngis, yet emerging evidence suggests that age-related respiratory decline plays a central but under-recognized role in symptomatic vocal aging. This review synthesizes work on respiratory aging, speech-breathing patterns, and respiratory muscle performance in older adults with presbyphonia, and evaluates early attempts to target these systems in rehabilitation.
RECENT FINDINGS: Laryngeal atrophy and glottic insufficiency are common in aging but do not reliably predict presbyphonia. Age-related red

Background: An intricate physiological and pathophysiological connection exists between the heart and lungs, which is especially important in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). While an exercise intervention may seem the best approach to leverage this relationship, the prior work has shown that, despite numerous health benefits, regular exercise training does not improve cardiorespiratory control in individuals with SCI. Breath training presents an alternative intervention that is uniquely accessible, with yogic breathing directly engaging linked fluctuations in respiration and cardiov

OBJECTIVES: Long-term care (LTC) staff may develop dissociation due to high-stress work environments and trauma exposures. This study aimed to (1) assess the prevalence of pathological dissociation in LTC home staff during the COVID-19 pandemic; (2) examine the associations of pathological dissociation with demographic characteristics, mental health, insomnia, and professional quality of life; and (3) examine whether pathological dissociation was sensitive to change following a coherent breathing intervention.
DESIGN: We analyzed data from a pre-post breathing intervention study conducted bet

BACKGROUND: There has been little published work on the statistical features of breath times in postoperative patients. We applied extreme value theory (a statistical method) to the variation in the timing of postoperative breathing.
METHODS: We observed 49 patients 3-6 h after a variety of surgical procedures, once they had achieved a stable breathing pattern. The breathing patterns could be one of the three types predicted by the extreme value model. 'Finite' breathing patterns (n=30) have a finite upper limit of duration for any apnoea. Patients that displayed one of the other two patterns

Well-trained divers can be expected to differ from healthy controls in their ventilatory response to breathing through a tube and to physical exercise. Therefore, we measured their minute ventilation (VE) at rest and during breathing through a tube combined with two levels of physical exercise (1 or 2 W.kg body weight-1). For breathing through a tube an additional dead space of 600 ml was used. All divers were trained in the breath-hold technique and in the use of the breathing apparatus. Their mean period of training as divers was 9 +/- 6 years. The approximate age of the subjects was 25 year

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Carbon ion radiotherapy (CIRT) has demonstrated promising treatment outcomes for pancreatic cancer. However, breathing-induced organ motion can compromise the efficacy of the treatment, leading to under- or over-dosage within the target and organs at risk (OARs). In this work, the dose during CIRT was simultaneously measured at the target and OARs using an anthropomorphic phantom to evaluate the effectiveness of respiratory gating for compensating breathing motion.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Pancreas Phantom for Ion beam Therapy (PPIeT) was irradiated with carbon ions.

We tested the hypothesis that the promotion of hypoxic ventilatory responsiveness (HVR) and/or hypercapnic ventilatory responsiveness (HCVR) mostly acting on the carotid body with a changing work rate can be attributed to faster hypoxic ventilatory dynamics at the onset of exercise. Eleven subjects performed a cycling exercise with two repetitions of 6 minutes while breathing at FIO(2) = 12%. The tests began with unloaded pedaling, followed by three constant work rates of 40%, 60%, and 80% of the subject's ventilatory threshold at hypoxia. Reference data were obtained at the 80% ventilatory th

An interdisciplinary working group from the German Society of Hospital Hygiene (DGKH) and the German Society for Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care (DGAI) worked out the following recommendations for infection prevention during anaesthesia by using breathing system filters (BSF). The BSF shall be changed after each patient. The filter retention efficiency for airborne particles is recommended to be >99% (II). The retention performance of BSF for liquids is recommended to be at pressures of at least 60 hPa (=60 mbar) or 20 hPa above the selected maximum ventilation pressure in the anaesthetic s

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility of conducting biological tetrachloroethylene (perchloroethylene, PCE) exposure assessments of dry cleaning employees in conjunction with evaluation of possible PCE health effects.
METHODS: Eighteen women from four dry cleaning facilities in southwestern Ohio were monitored in a pilot study of workers with PCE exposure. Personal breathing zone samples were collected from each employee on two consecutive work days. Biological monitoring included a single measurement of PCE in blood and multiple measurements of pre- and post-shi

Anxiety is recognized as a major health issue and is quite prevalent among older adults. An efficient way to manage anxiety is abdominal breathing. Breathing exercises seem to reduce anxiety and to increase parasympathetic activity assessed by HRV indexes. Yet, the effect of abdominal breathing on physiological stress (HRV) and anxiety in older adults remains poorly understood. Therefore, the aim of this study is to test the effects of deep and slow breathing (DSB, low inhale/exhale ratio) on physiological stress and anxiety in older adults (n = 22) in comparison with younger ones (n = 25). Exposure to household air pollutants is becoming a serious environmental health risk. Various methods can be applied to assess humans' exposure status to indoor pollutants, with breath monitoring being among the best options. Breath sampling is fast and non-invasive, and contains compounds that can be used as markers for evaluating exposure length and estimating internal concentrations of pollutants. However, the distribution of compounds between gas and droplets in breath samples represents one of the key challenges associated with this analytical method. In this work, a needle-trap device (N

Sleep fragmentation is considered to have a central role in the pathophysiology of sleep-disordered breathing. However, the evaluation of sleep fragmentation can be very troublesome work. We sought to evaluate sleep fragmentation in 10 patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome by utilizing fast-fourier transforms to render their sleep encephalograms as spectrograms (horizontal axis: time, vertical axis: frequency, color: power). Detailed 5-minute spectrograms revealed relatively uniform patterns of change in EEG spectra during and after apnea episodes. In non-REM sleep, delta activity dur

This article describes how the Health Education and Art for Resiliency Teaching (HEART) project facilitated the implementation of deep breathing exercises, led by school nurses, serving rural and vulnerable school-aged children. The project used the Health Equity Framework to enhance the benefits of interventions that provided teachers and students with a practical and effective adjunctive tool to manage anxiety. The breathing techniques were successful in reducing student referrals to the administrative staff and to the school nurse for acting out or feeling ill due to stress-induced anxiety.

In this paper, the author presents his method of dealing with breathing problems when he conducts an orthodontic consultation. Because they can interfere with growth, the author believes that ventilation disorders should be dealt with promptly so that they cannot cause skeletal discrepancies. After having reviewed the literature, the author presents his clinical procedures for uncovering and treating breathing disorders and then shows treated cases to illustrate his techniques, one of the most important of which, palate splitting, is simple, effective and virtually without risk. In addition to
