Redefining sustainable commuting: emerging trends and pandemic-induced changes at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, daily commuting was considered standard practice for many employees. The pandemic propelled a shift to hybrid and remote work, and the subsequent sustainability implications are highlighted through a survey-based case study at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. This study investigated potential sustainability advantages and disadvantages of implementing optional hybrid and remote work through environmental impact analysis and thematic coding. Weather-induced mode shifts, local transportation fuel mix, and regional electricity mix were accounted for. Findings i

How do gynecologists face to social problems among women cancer survivors?

In recent decades, surgical techniques, new anticancer drugs' development, and radiation equipment have led to continuous improvements in cancer survival rates and quality of life of cancer survivors (CSs). While 61.0% of gynecological cancer survivors (GCS) in Japan belonged to a working-age group (20-64 years old), the number of working GCS within the working-age population has increased. In Japan, it seems that there has been more interest in striking a balance between cancer treatment and work, especially since 2016 when the Cancer Control Act was amended and national guidelines for workin

"To Work Just Like Anyone Else"-A Narrative from a Man Aging with Spinal Cord Injury.

People aging with spinal cord injury (SCI) develop medical problems commonly associated with the aging process at a younger age than the general population. However, research about how the life story changes and how meaning will be experienced in occupations is lacking. The aim was to describe and offer an explanation of how a man experienced meaning in everyday occupations while aging with an SCI. Four narrative interviews were performed over a four-year period, with a man in his fifties, who lived with SCI for 39 years. The narrative analysis generated an overall plot, named "To Work Just Li

Efficacy and Safety of Micronutrient Treatment for Irritability in Adolescents: 8-Week Double-Blinded Randomized Placebo-Controlled Trial (BEAM).

OBJECTIVE: Irritability is a transdiagnostic dimension characterized by affective and behavioral components. The Balancing Emotions of Adolescents with Micronutrients (BEAM) study investigated broad-spectrum micronutrient (vitamins and minerals) efficacy and safety for adolescents with moderate-to-severe irritability symptoms. METHOD: A total of 132 unmedicated adolescents (12-17 years of age) were randomized to micronutrients (n = 67) or active placebo (n = 65) for 8 weeks and monitored remotely with weekly parent/adolescent questionnaires and monthly online meetings with a registered psycho

Physical Therapy Intervention With Hippotherapy (HPOT) Affects Balance Control in the Elderly: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Aging is characterized by a decline in functional abilities, strength, balance, flexibility, agility, and coordination due to neurological and muscular changes. Hippotherapy (HPOT) has been recognized for its physical and psychological benefits for older adults. Hence, this study aimed to investigate the effects of hippotherapy on balance in elderly individuals. The novelty lies in using the Biodex Balance System SD for dynamic balance assessment in healthy elderly without neurological disorders. METHODS: We recruited elderly men aged 60 to 70 who had independent mobility

Effect of a perturbation-based balance training program on compensatory stepping and grasping reactions in older adults: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Compensatory stepping and grasping reactions are prevalent responses to sudden loss of balance and play a critical role in preventing falls. The ability to execute these reactions effectively is impaired in older adults. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate a perturbation-based balance training program designed to target specific age-related impairments in compensatory stepping and grasping balance recovery reactions. DESIGN: This was a double-blind randomized controlled trial. SETTING: The study was conducted at research laboratories in a large urban hospital.

Relationships Between Adolescent Perception of Family Functioning and Affective Symptomatology.

OBJECTIVE: The bidirectional relationships between family functioning and adolescent depressive and anxiety disorders have been documented. However, categorical diagnostic criteria for these disorders often mask the high variability of symptom severity across individuals sharing the same diagnoses. Accounting for such heterogeneity, this study examined the associations between domains of family functioning and depression, anxiety, and anhedonia symptoms from the adolescent perspective using a dimensional approach. METHOD: Semistructured diagnostic interviews and self-reported measures for dep

Designs of Upper Limb Tremor Suppression Orthoses: Efficacy and Wearer's Comfort.

Tremor is a rhythmic, involuntary oscillatory movement that severely affects some aspects of a patient's daily life. The use of wearable tremor-suppressing orthoses has become an effective, noninvasive treatment method for controlling tremors. This article summarizes recent developments in upper limb tremor suppression orthoses, aiming to provide a foundation for future research. By analyzing the working mechanisms, degrees-of-freedom (DOFs), weight, and tremor suppression effectiveness of various types of orthoses, the following conclusions are drawn: We found that differences in the working

Interventional pulmonologists may not appreciate these intricacies. Advocating for resources to benefit patients with administrators, insurance companies, and others requires understanding these principles. This series of 4 articles will review the fundamental and advanced aspects of billing, coding, documentation, and programmatic building of an interventional pulmonology program. Part 1 will review the fundamentals of billing, coding, and reimbursement. Par

Suicide among doctors: A narrative review.

Doctors across the world work in stressful conditions, often making life or death decisions under considerable pressure. With changes in patient and societal expectations, these pressures continue to rise. For several decades, it has been illustrated that rates of psychiatric disorders, especially suicide, are considerably higher in doctors than the general population. We performed a comprehensive literature search of suicide in doctors. Using defined terms (suicide, self-harm, doctors, physicians, residents) in PubMed, we identified pertinent articles for review. We find that suicide in docto
