Quantifying abnormal writing kinematics in writer's cramp using a novel software platform.

BACKGROUND: Writer's cramp is a task-specific focal hand dystonia, which is diagnosed clinically. Quantification of defect in WC is done using clinical scales, while digitized platforms are lacking. OBJECTIVE: To design and test a platform that can differentiate and quantify the abnormal kinematics of writing using a software interface and to validate it in adult-onset isolated writer's cramp (WC). METHODS: A native platform was designed using Java and Wacom Intuos pro tablet and the data analyzed using a MATLAB-based platform called Large Data-Based Evaluation of Kinematics in Handwriting (

Biography Writing in the Pediatric Palliative Care Context: Review and Feasibility Data.

BACKGROUND: Biography writing services are increasingly being used with adult palliative care patients, helping them document their stories in a way that provides meaning for themselves, family, and friends. However, the feasibility of applying a biography program to a pediatric palliative care context is less well known. METHODS: A narrative review of the literature was conducted, drawing on existing adult biography programs, while noting differences between the pediatric and adult contexts. The Story Project is outlined in this manuscript as an example of a pediatric biography writing appro

Developmental Language Disorder and Writing: A Scoping Review From Childhood to Adulthood.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to conduct a scoping review of literature focused on the effects of developmental language disorder (DLD) on writing skills across the life span to highlight gaps in our knowledge of how to support writing for this population. METHOD: We adopted the five-step framework for conducting scoping reviews outlined by Arksey and O'Malley (2005) to identify literature focused on writing outcomes for individuals with DLD in childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. RESULTS: Seventy-two studies from 1991 to 2022 met review criteria. Results indicated that spelling m

Suitability of Automated Writing Measures for Clinical Trial Outcome in Writer's Cramp.

BACKGROUND: Writer's cramp (WC) dystonia is a rare disease that causes abnormal postures during the writing task. Successful research studies for WC and other forms of dystonia are contingent on identifying sensitive and specific measures that relate to the clinical syndrome and achieve a realistic sample size to power research studies for a rare disease. Although prior studies have used writing kinematics, their diagnostic performance remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of automated measures that distinguish subjects with WC from healthy volunt

Simultaneous Writing and Erasing Using Probe Lithography Synchronized Erasing and Deposition (PLiSED).

Simultaneous writing and erasing of two and three molecules in one single step at the microscale using Polymeric Lithography Editor (PLE) probes is demonstrated. Simultaneous writing and erasing of three molecules was accomplished by rastering a nanoporous probe that was loaded with rhodamine B and fluorescein over a quinine-coated glass substrate. The solvated quinine molecules were erased and transported into the probe matrix, whereas both rhodamine and fluorescein molecules were simultaneously deposited and aligned with the path of the erased quinine on the substrate. The simultaneous writi

From preschool language skills to writing in adolescence: Evidence of genetic continuity.

Given the importance of writing for academic achievement, this study aimed to understand how early oral language contributes to later writing skills. The first objective was to determine if preschool language skills were associated with high school writing, and if so, whether they contributed directly or indirectly through school age language. The second aim was to explore the extent to which genetic and environmental factors explained these potential associations. The sample was drawn from the Quebec Newborn Twin Study, a longitudinal follow-up of twins born in the greater Montreal area, Queb

Emotional processing writing and physiological stress responses: understanding constructive and unconstructive processes.

Writing about emotions related to a life stressor is thought to promote coping via emotional processing. However, all styles of emotional processing may not be beneficial to managing stress. Such styles can include constructive (planning/problem-solving, meaning-making) and unconstructive (rumination, worry) forms. This study utilised a randomised experimental design to examine the physiological impact (as indexed by heart rate variability, salivary cortisol reactivity and recovery) of expressive writing with guidance to promote constructive and discourage unconstructive styles (EP+) versus ex

Femtosecond laser filaments for rapid and flexible writing of fiber Bragg grating.

A new beam delivery method is introduced for controlling filament formation in optical fiber that enables point-by-point writing of 1st order fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) with single femtosecond laser pulses. Uniform filament tracks with azimuthal symmetry were formed fully through the 9.3 µm core waveguide by a modified immersion focusing method to eliminate astigmatism by the cylindrical fiber shape. Filament arrays were precisely assembled inside of single-mode fiber, generating strong FBG resonances in the telecommunication band. Laser exposure control within this unique thin-grating geomet

Differential impacts of different keyboard inputting methods on reading and writing skills.

Nowadays, typewriting has become an important mode of written communication. A report that typewriting may hinder Chinese children's reading development has sparked substantial concern about whether typing on electronic devices would increase the rate of reading disorders, wherein children used a pronunciation-based input system that associates alphabet letters with phonemes in standard Chinese (Putonghua) and may conflict with the traditional visuomotor-based learning processes for written Chinese. If orthographic-based input methods that require good awareness of the orthographic structure o

[Autopsy of children, neonates, fetuses and embryos: Preparation, technique and report writing].

Information obtained from the autopsies of children, neonates, fetuses and embryos, may not only be useful to explain the loss experienced by the parents but also to estimate the risk of recurrence. The detection of diseases by an autopsy helps to reduce the risk as well as with the planning of the next pregnancy and the optimal care of mother and fetus. Although incidences are continually dropping, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) statistics each year at least 2.6 million children worldwide suffer intrauterine death after the 28th week of pregnancy. Despite a general decrease

Predictors of attrition from an expressive writing intervention for sexual abuse survivors.

This study examined predictors of attrition from a clinical trial examining the effects of an expressive writing intervention for sexual problems among female survivors of child sexual abuse. Participants were 124 women all reporting sexual difficulties, who were randomized to a trauma-focused condition (n = 45), an experimental sexual schema-focused condition (n = 37), or a control condition (n = 42). Thirty-five women (28%) dropped out before completing posttreatment assessments. Younger age, less education, and increased use of positive coping strategies were each independently associated w

Take-Wait-Stop: a patient-centered strategy for writing PRN medication instructions.

Recent studies have linked patient misunderstanding of label instructions for as needed (PRN) medications to dosing errors. This study conducted a preliminary field test of patient-centered PRN label instructions. Patients participated in a hypothetical dosing experiment and were randomized to a patient-centered label (referred to as "Take-Wait-Stop") or standard label. Participants were asked to demonstrate dosing the medicine over 24 hours. Three types of independent dosing errors were measured: (a) taking more than two pills at one time, (b) exceeding the maximum daily dose, and (c) waiting

Task-specific writing tremor: clinical phenotypes, progression, treatment outcomes, and proposed nomenclature.

Task-specific tremor diagnoses remain controversial. We evaluated 56 subjects seen with writing tremor. The diagnosis was made if there was a clear history of exclusive tremor while writing for at least 3 years before noticing tremor in any other scenario and the continued presence of writing tremor as the most prominent aspect of their tremor disorder on examination. The age of tremor onset was 47.2 ± 18.0 years (73.2% male). Ethnic backgrounds were Caucasian (68.4%), African (23.2%), Hispanic (5.2%), and Asian/Indian (3.3%), and 44% reported any tremor in a first degree relative. Writing tre

Ipsilateral printing in children's mirror-writing: a cause of specific learning disabilities?

Previous research has demonstrated that young children produce mirror-image letter-reversals when printing their names in a leftward direction from the midline or right margin of their writing paper. This ability is postulated to be an epiphenomenon of a symmetric, proximal (arm) stage of motor development that ontogenetically precedes lateralization of fine-motor distal (finger) control-a stage in which each arm can be controlled by either side of the brain. From this view, canonical writing in right hemi-space is contralaterally mediated by the left hemisphere and mirror-writing in left hemi

Beyond Grammar: A Structural Scientific Writing Workflow for Non-native English Speakers.

Scientific writing presents a universal cognitive challenge, but non-native English speakers (NNES) face a dual burden: mastering complex scientific content while navigating a second language within an English-dominated publishing landscape. Despite the global expansion of research, many early-career clinicians and international medical graduates struggle to publish, not due to a lack of scientific merit, but because of unaddressed structural and psychological barriers. Moving beyond traditional interventions that rely strictly on grammar workshops and language editing, this Perspective offers

Writing neglect, rewriting self: Handwritten diaries with adults who lived youth addiction.

BACKGROUND: Youth addiction often unfolds within landscapes of neglect, yet adult accounts of these histories are commonly gathered through one-off interviews or clinical assessments. This study examined how adults in stable recovery narrate adolescent alcohol and other drug use and associated neglect through handwritten diary-style writing, and what such writing contributes methodologically to qualitative inquiry across time. METHODS: This paper reports a secondary analysis of community-generated qualitative materials produced through the SIDINL peer-support and mental health recovery networ

Writing development in deaf adults: a longitudinal study in sign-mediated contexts.

This qualitative longitudinal multiple-case study examined written Catalan development in four deaf adults with limited formal literacy attending a Catalan Sign Language-mediated community literacy course taught by a Deaf instructor. Twelve focal texts, collected at initial, midpoint, and final course-embedded writing occasions, were analyzed across orthography, lexical resources, morphosyntax, cohesion, and discourse organization. Participant-level trajectories and complete focal texts provided the primary basis for interpretation. Later productions were generally longer and showed broader co

Exploring AI use policies in manuscript writing in cardiology and vascular journals.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies are rapidly evolving and offer efficiencies in manuscript generation however, this technology has raised concerns about the potential for bias, errors, and plagiarism to occur. In response, some journals have updated their author guidelines to address AI use. METHODS: We assessed author guidelines for 213 MEDLINE-indexed cardiovascular journals to evaluate policies on AI use in manuscript writing. Journal metrics such as CiteScore, Journal Impact Factor (JIF), Journal Citation Indicator (JCI), Source Normalized Impact per Paper (SNIP), and

Supporting Teachers' Data-Based Individualization of Early Writing Instruction: An Efficacy Trial.

In a multiyear, multisite, randomized control trial, we examined the effects of comprehensive professional development designed to support teachers' data-based instruction (DBI) for students with intensive early writing needs. Teachers (N = 154; primarily special educators or intervention specialists) were assigned randomly to a treatment group (n = 76), in which they received tools, learning, and coaching to support their DBI implementation over 20 weeks, or to a control group (n = 78). Students either received DBI in early writing (n = 155) from treatment teachers or their usual writing inst
