Mercury biomagnification through food webs is affected by physical and chemical characteristics of lakes.

Mercury (Hg) contamination in aquatic systems remains a global concern because the organic form, methyl Hg (MeHg), can biomagnify to harmful concentrations in fish, fish-eating wildlife, and humans. Food web transfer of MeHg has been explored using models of log MeHg versus relative trophic position (nitrogen isotopes, δ(15)N), but regression slopes vary across systems for unknown reasons. In this study, MeHg biomagnification was determined for 11 lake food webs in Kejimkujik National Park, Nova Scotia, Canada, and compared to physical and chemical lake characteristics using principal componen

Evaluation of a Novel Climate-Driven SIR Model for Cholera Prediction.

The causative agent of cholera, Vibrio cholerae, is a bacterium native to the aquatic environment and commensal to zooplankton, namely copepods. V. cholerae thrives in warm, moderately saline water and its incidence is strongly influenced by environmental factors, which have proven critical for predictive awareness of cholera by identifying outbreak locations and timing. Susceptible-Infected-Recovered (SIR) models provide useful information for understanding transmission dynamics and epidemic curves of disease outbreaks. Previous such models lacked predictive ability due to limited data in reg

Multi-Scale Temporal Patterns of Small Cetacean Behaviour in the Bay of Biscay.

Marine mammals are increasingly exposed to anthropogenic pressures, yet knowledge of their behavioural ecology remains limited, hindering effective conservation planning. Two years of continuous passive acoustic data were collected with porpoise detectors (C-POD and F-POD) in the northern Bay of Biscay (northeastern Atlantic Ocean), as part of the baseline assessment for an offshore wind farm development in the South Brittany area. Distinct temporal patterns in small cetacean presence and behaviour were observed. Dolphins exhibited dominant year-round presence with pronounced peaks in August-S

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) nanoplastics target carbonic anhydrase and alter physiological functions in Daphnia magna.

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) nanoplastics are increasingly recognized as relevant contaminants in freshwater ecosystems, yet the molecular mechanisms underlying their sublethal biological effects remain poorly understood. The aim of this study was to investigate whether true-to-life polyethylene terephthalate (PET) nanoplastics, generated from post-consumer PET bottles, affect carbonic anhydrase (CA) activity in Daphnia magna and whether such molecular alteration is associated with physiological dysfunction at the organism level. Label-free PET nanoplastics were generated from post-consume

Cigarette Butt Pollution in Aquatic Ecosystems: Sources, Environmental Fate, Ecotoxicological Impacts and Mitigation Strategies.

Cigarette butts (CBs) are one of the most abundant forms of anthropogenic litter worldwide and represent an important source of chemical and microplastic pollution in aquatic ecosystems. An estimated 4.5 trillion CBs are discarded annually, with a substantial proportion entering freshwater, estuarine and marine environments. Cigarette litter contains a complex mixture of hazardous substances, including nicotine, cotinine, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), heavy metals, aromatic amines, BTEX compounds, tobacco-specific nitrosamines and cellulose acetate microfibres. Evidence from laborat

Circles in the sea: annual courtship "torus" behaviour of basking sharks Cetorhinus maximus identified in the eastern North Atlantic Ocean.

Groups of basking sharks engaged in circling behaviour are rarely observed, and their function remains enigmatic in the absence of detailed observations. Here, underwater and aerial video recordings of multiple circling groups of basking sharks during late summer (August and September 2016-2021) in the eastern North Atlantic Ocean showed groups numbering between 6 and 23 non-feeding individuals of both sexes. Sharks swam slowly in a rotating "torus" (diameter range: 17-39 m), with individuals layered vertically from the surface to a maximum depth of 16 m. Within a torus, sharks engaged in clos

Intraspecific size variation in planktonic foraminifera cannot be consistently predicted by the environment.

The size structure of plankton communities is an important determinant of their functions in marine ecosystems. However, few studies have quantified how organism size varies within species across biogeographical scales. Here, we investigate how planktonic foraminifera, a ubiquitous zooplankton group, vary in size across the tropical and subtropical oceans of the world. Using a recently digitized museum collection, we measured shell area of 3,799 individuals of nine extant species in 53 seafloor sediments. We first analyzed potential size biases in the collection. Then, for each site, we obtain

Mercury isotopes of key tissues document mercury metabolic processes in seabirds.

Seabirds accumulate significant amounts of mercury (Hg) due to their long-life span together with their medium to high trophic position in marine food webs. Hg speciation and Hg isotopic analyses of total Hg in different tissues (pectoral muscles, liver, brain, kidneys, blood and feathers) were assessed to investigate their detoxification mechanisms. Three species with contrasted ecological characteristics were studied: the Antarctic prion (zooplankton feeder), the white-chinned petrel (pelagic generalist consumer) and the southern giant petrel (scavenger on seabirds and marine mammals). The d

The complexity of co-limitation: nutrigenomics reveal non-additive interactions of calcium and phosphorus on gene expression in Daphnia pulex.

Many lakes across Canada and northern Europe have experienced declines in ambient phosphorus (P) and calcium (Ca) supply for over 20 years. While these declines might create or exacerbate nutrient limitation in aquatic food webs, our ability to detect and quantify different types of nutrient stress on zooplankton remains rudimentary. Here, we used growth bioassay experiments and whole transcriptome RNAseq, collectively nutrigenomics, to examine the nutritional phenotypes produced by low supplies of P and Ca separately and together in the freshwater zooplankter Daphnia pulex. We found that daph

Exploration of relationships between phytoplankton biomass and related environmental variables using multivariate statistic analysis in a eutrophic shallow lake: a 5-year study.

Understanding the process of the changing phytoplankton patterns can be particularly useful in water quality improvement and management decisions. However, it is generally not easy to illustrate the interactions between phytoplankton biomass and related environmental variables given their high spatial and temporal heterogeneity. To elucidate relationships between them, in a eutrophic shallow lake, Taihu Lake, relative long-term data set of biotic and abiotic parameters of water quality in the lake were conducted using multivariate statistical analysis within seasonal periodicity. The results i

Nature of phosphorus limitation in the ultraoligotrophic eastern Mediterranean.

Phosphate addition to surface waters of the ultraoligotrophic, phosphorus-starved eastern Mediterranean in a Lagrangian experiment caused unexpected ecosystem responses. The system exhibited a decline in chlorophyll and an increase in bacterial production and copepod egg abundance. Although nitrogen and phosphorus colimitation hindered phytoplankton growth, phosphorous may have been transferred through the microbial food web to copepods via two, not mutually exclusive, pathways: (i) bypass of the phytoplankton compartment by phosphorus uptake in heterotrophic bacteria and (ii) tunnelling, wher

Temperature influence on the sensitivity of Artemia franciscana to globally used pesticides - Oxyfluorfen and copper.

Climate change further the world's human population increase is a mainstream political issue, and it's critical to search for solutions to produce enough food to feed everyone. Pesticides and fertilizers have been used as an easy solution to prevent pests and increase food production. Nevertheless, their overuse has dangerous effects on the ecosystems and communities. Oxyfluorfen (Oxy) and copper (Cu) based formulations are used as pesticides and widely applied on agricultural fields for crop protection. However, they have shown negative effects on non-target species. So, this work proposes to

Evolution of tolerance to chlorpyrifos causes cross-tolerance to another organophosphate and a carbamate, but reduces tolerance to a neonicotinoid and a pharmaceutical.

Exposure to pesticides is a major stressor in freshwater ecosystems. While populations can evolve tolerance to pesticides and thereby ensure their persistence in contaminated environments, this may have important consequences for their sensitivity to other pollutants. Indeed, tolerance to one pollutant may both increase (as a cost of tolerance) or decrease (cross-tolerance) the sensitivity to other pollutants. Despite the increasing concern of pharmaceuticals in waterbodies, no patterns of pesticide-induced (cross-)tolerance have been studied. We conducted 48 h acute toxicity assays with a ran

New insights on the role of the holoplanktonic mollusk Firoloida desmarestia (Gastropoda: Pterotracheidae) as host for digenetic trematodes.

Interactions of holoplanktonic mollusks with symbionts and parasites are poorly known. We investigated the ecology of infection (prevalence, intensity, and abundance) in Firoloida desmarestia, caught during two sampling campaign sessions in 2012, off the Baja California Peninsula, Mexico (IMECOCAL, 83 stations) and a coastal research center near La Sorpresa Beach, Baja California Sur, in the Gulf of California (14 stations). Only females of F. desmarestia were parasitized. Hemiuroidea parthenita rediae infected 1% of F. desmarestia population at IMECOCAL, whereas young unencysted metacercariae

Bioaccumulation of methylmercury within the marine food web of the outer Bay of Fundy, Gulf of Maine.

Mercury and methylmercury were measured in seawater and biota collected from the outer Bay of Fundy to better document mercury bioaccumulation in a temperate marine food web. The size of an organism, together with δ13 C and δ15 N isotopes, were measured to interpret mercury levels in biota ranging in size from microplankton (25μm) to swordfish, dolphins and whales. Levels of mercury in seawater were no different with depth and not elevated relative to upstream sources. The δ13 C values of primary producers were found to be inadequate to specify the original energy source of various faunas, how

Effects of algal food quality on sexual reproduction of Daphnia magna.

The objective of our study was to investigate sexual reproduction of Daphnia magna associated with mating behaviors and hatching rates, according to different algal food sources. Since a diatom is known to contain more abundant long-chain poly unsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), we hypothesized that the diatom-consuming D. magna would exhibit more successful reproduction rates. Upon the hypothesis, we designed three experiments using two algal species, a green alga (Chlorella vulgaris) and a diatom (Stephanodiscus hantzschii). From the results, we found that the mating frequency and copulation du

Associations and dynamics of Vibrionaceae in the environment, from the genus to the population level.

The Vibrionaceae, which encompasses several potential pathogens, including V. cholerae, the causative agent of cholera, and V. vulnificus, the deadliest seafood-borne pathogen, are a well-studied family of marine bacteria that thrive in a diverse habitats. To elucidate the environmental conditions under which vibrios proliferate, numerous studies have examined correlations with bulk environmental variables-e.g., temperature, salinity, nitrogen, and phosphate-and association with potential host organisms. However, how meaningful these environmental associations are remains unclear because data

Evaluating the trophic transfer of cadmium, polonium, and methylmercury in an estuarine food chain.

We examined the transfer of Cd, methylmercury (MeHg), and Po in an estuarine food chain (from phytoplankton to zooplankton [Daphnia pulex] to killifish [Fundulus heteroclitus] and, finally, to juvenile striped bass [Morone saxatilis]) to better understand both the extent to which these elements may biomagnify and the underlying mechanisms governing this biomagnification. Among the phytoplankton examined (Cyclotella meneghiniana and Chlamdomonas reinhardtii), metal uptake was rapid, and volume concentration factors for all metals reached values between 10(4) and 10(5). The resulting assimilatio

Late-summer hotspot of particulate organic matter and essential omega-3 fatty acids at the sea-ice bottom in the Central Arctic Ocean.

The Central Arctic Ocean is undergoing rapid environmental change associated with sea-ice retreat. The sea-ice bottom and adjacent under-ice waters are key zones for particulate organic matter (POM) accumulation and zooplankton foraging, yet the characteristics of POM across this interface remain unclear. Here, we analyzed particulate organic carbon (POC) and fatty-acid (FA) profiles of POM from these two habitats to quantify organic matter enrichment and characterize POM sources, omega-3 FA availability, and potential trophic significance. The sea-ice bottom represented an organic-matter hots

Winners and losers under hydroxide-based ocean alkalinity enhancement in a Tasmanian plankton community.

Ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) is an emerging carbon dioxide CO2 removal approach for climate change mitigation and can be implemented with various alkaline materials that convert dissolved CO2 into (bi)carbonates, enabling additional atmospheric CO2 removal. A key knowledge gap is how alkaline materials affect marine life. This study investigated effects of OAE via sodium hydroxide (NaOH) on a coastal Tasmanian plankton community. Natural communities were enclosed within microcosms assigned to three groups: a control, an unequilibrated treatment (NaOH addition), and an equilibrated treatm
