Autonomic nervous system appears to play a role in obliteration of processus vaginalis.

BACKGROUND: Failed obliteration of processus vaginalis (PV) has recently been proposed to be due to persistence of the smooth muscle (SM), which is transiently present to generate the physical force to descend the testis. Sacs from hernia, hydrocele, or undescended testis reveal alterations in Ca(2+) contents. Since Ca(2+) signaling and some regulatory proteins are involved in programmed cell death (PCD), a flow cytometric evaluation was planned to evaluate the expression of inducers or inhibitors of PCD in sacs from different diagnostic sources. METHODS: Sacs associated with male hernia ( n=

Head-up tilt test in patients with high pretest likelihood of neurally mediated syncope: an approximation to the "real sensitivity" of this testing.

UNLABELLED: This study was designed to examine the "true sensitivity" of a specific head-up tilt (HUT) testing protocol using clinical findings. The HUT protocol used 45 minutes at 60 degrees for the baseline portion and intermittent boluses of 2, 4, and 6 micrograms of isoproterenol in the second phase. Eighty-eight patients (40 men and 48 women; mean age of 33.8 +/- 16 years) with recurrent syncope and high pretest likelihood of neurally mediated syncope were included. The following were considerated as high pretest likelihood criteria: (1) at least two syncopal episodes; (2) no structural h

Does the saltatory pattern on cardiotocograph (CTG) trace really exist? The ZigZag pattern as an alternative definition and its correlation with perinatal outcomes.

BACKGROUND: The saltatory pattern (SP) has been defined by guidelines as a uniformly increased bandwidth of >25 beats per min lasting for 30 min. However, previous research suggest that it is very unusual to observe such a "uniform" increase in the bandwidth persisting for >30 min. Baseline fetal heart rate variability (FHRV) on cardiotocography reflects the integrity of the central nervous system. During labor, in the presence of a gradually-evolving hypoxia associated with the onset of metabolic acidosis, FHRV may be reduced. However, if a fetus is exposed to rapidly-evolving hypoxia, it may

Heart Rate Variability (HRV) serves as an objective correlate of distress and symptom burden in multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction is frequently seen in people living with multiple sclerosis (MS). Heart rate variability (HRV) is an easy and objective index for evaluating ANS functioning, and it has been previously used to explore the association between ANS and the experience of symptom burden in other chronic diseases. Given ANS functioning can be influenced by physical and psychological factors, this study investigated whether emotional distress and/or the presence of ANS dysfunction is associated with symptom severity in people living with MS. METHODS: Participant

Comparative Autonomic Responses to Diagnostic Interviewing between Individuals with GAD, MDD, SAD and Healthy Controls.

Dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) has been well documented in individuals diagnosed with a range of psychological disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and major depressive disorder (MDD). Moreover, these disorders both confer an increased risk of cardiovascular disease-which may relate to increased sympathetic and decreased parasympathetic tone. Extant research has indicated a reduction in autonomic flexibility in GAD, and while reduced flexibility has also been seen in MDD, the specific physiological alterations have been more difficult to categorize due t

A study of neurologic symptoms on exposure to organophosphate pesticides in the children of agricultural workers.

Pesticides are used extensively throughout the world in agriculture and in pest control as well as for community health purposes. Organophosphate (OP) pesticide self-poisoning is an important clinical problem in rural regions of the developing world that kills an estimated 200,000 people every year. Unintentional poisoning kills far fewer people but is an apparent problem in places where highly toxic OP pesticides are available. Neurologic dysfunction is the best documented health effect of pesticide exposure. High-level exposure has both acute and long-term neurologic signs and symptoms, and

Baroreflex Sensitivity in Patients With Laryngopharyngeal Dysfunction-The Overwhelmed Vagus Hypothesis.

IMPORTANCE: The autonomic nervous system maintains internal stability by concurrently prioritizing and managing different functions. It is currently not known whether dysfunction at the aerodigestive junction could overwhelm autonomic control and impair other functions. OBJECTIVE: To compare baroreflex sensitivity, a prognostically significant index of the autonomic system's ability to stabilize blood pressure, between patients with predominantly esophagogastric (digestive) and patients with predominantly laryngopharyngeal (aerodigestive) symptoms. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A cross-

Acute effects of aerobic versus anaerobic running on heart rate variability and autonomic nervous system indices in male college athletes: a within-subject comparison.

BACKGROUND: During rhythmic exercise, overall, heart rate variability (HRV) decreases with increasing intensity, and resting measurements do not reliably reflect responses during activity. Nonneural oscillations in the high-frequency band caused by increased respiratory effort further complicate HRV interpretation. Autonomic nervous system (ANS) balance, particularly between parasympathetic and sympathetic activity, is crucial for optimal athletic performance, highlighting the importance of non-invasive assessments. This study aimed to examine the acute effects of aerobic versus anaerobic runn

'I Want Everyone to Have It, and Everyone to Be on It': A Feasibility Study of the Transforming Long Covid Intervention.

BACKGROUND: An understanding of the nature of long Covid (LC) is evolving, with recent evidence highlighting the role of increased sympathetic activation and decreased parasympathetic response. Building upon this emerging science, the 'Transforming Long COVID' (TLC) programme was developed to support participants in their recovery by (i) introducing education on the neuroscience underpinning persistent symptoms (with a particular focus on the autonomic nervous system) and (ii) the development of self-management strategies to support recovery. The aim of this study was to examine the feasibilit

Designing for calm: exploring the impact of colored light on autonomic regulation and anxiety in patients awaiting cataract surgery.

OBJECTIVE: To explore whether immersive colored light can be used as a design intervention to reduce preoperative anxiety and modulate autonomic nervous system activity in patients awaiting cataract surgery. BACKGROUND: Preoperative anxiety is common and often underestimated. Environmental factors such as lighting may influence patients' emotional state and physiological stress responses. Integrating light-based strategies into preoperative spaces represents an opportunity for evidence-based design. METHODS: Thirty patients awaiting cataract surgery were exposed to immersive colored light (b

Appropriate sevoflurane concentration to stabilize autonomic activity during intubation with rocuronium in infants: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: In infants, sevoflurane is commonly used for induction of anesthesia, following which a muscle relaxant is administered to facilitate tracheal intubation. When rocuronium is used as the muscle relaxant, intubation may be performed before reaching an adequate depth of anesthesia because of its rapid onset. The purpose of this study was to investigate the optimal sevoflurane concentration that would minimize the impact of intubation on hemodynamics and autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity in infants. METHODS: Sixty-one infants aged 1-6 months, undergoing cleft lip repair, were en

Intravenous morphine infusion (IMF) to drug-naive, conscious rats evokes bradycardic, hypotensive effects, but pressor actions are elicited after IMF to rats previously given morphine.

Hemodynamic (blood pressure and heart rate) responses of conscious drug-naive rats were studied following intravenous (i.v.) infusion of sterile saline, morphine sulphate, and then naloxone hydrochloride, as well as of other groups previously injected with morphine sulphate. Those groups chronically given morphine sulphate received twice daily injections of morphine sulphate (5 mg/kg, s.c. per injection) for 3 or 6 days before testing with the i.v. infusion of morphine sulphate. Drugs were infused (135 microL/min) through an indwelling femoral venous catheter via a Harvard infusion pump, and b

A Nonrandomized Trial of the Effects of Passive Simulated Jogging on Short-Term Heart Rate Variability in Type 2 Diabetic Subjects.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus has reached global epidemic proportions, with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) comprising more than 90% of all subjects with diabetes. Cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy (CAN) frequently occurs in T2DM. Heart rate variability (HRV) reflects a neural balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic autonomic nervous systems (ANS) and a marker of CAN. Reduced HRV has been shown in T2DM and improved by physical activity and exercise. External addition of pulses to the circulation, as accomplished by a passive simulated jogging device (JD), restores HRV in nondiseased seden

Prognostic value of [18F]FDG-PET prior to [131I]MIBG treatment for pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma (PPGL).

OBJECTIVE: Pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas (PPGLs) are rare tumors arising from the neural crest cells that form the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. Radiotherapy with [131I]metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) is recommended for unresectable PPGLs. We investigated the usefulness of the metabolic tumor volume (MTV) and total lesion glycolysis (TLG) derived from [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) for predicting the prognosis of patients with unresectable PPGL(s) before receiving [131I]MIBG therapy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the

Parasympathetic innervation and function of endocrine pancreas requires the glial cell line-derived factor family receptor alpha2 (GFRalpha2).

Vagal parasympathetic input to the islets of Langerhans is a regulator of islet hormone secretion, but factors promoting parasympathetic islet innervation are unknown. Neurturin signaling via glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor family receptor alpha2 (GFRalpha2) has been demonstrated to be essential for the development of subsets of parasympathetic and enteric neurons. Here, we show that the parasympathetic nerve fibers and glial cells within and around the islets express GFRalpha2 and that islet parasympathetic innervation in GFRalpha2 knockout (KO) mice is reduced profoundly. In wild

Nicotine therapy in adulthood reverses the synaptic and behavioral deficits elicited by prenatal exposure to phenobarbital.

A major objective in identifying the mechanisms underlying neurobehavioral teratogenicity is the possibility of designing therapies that reverse or offset drug- or toxicant-induced neural damage. In our previous studies, we identified deficits in hippocampal muscarinic cholinergic receptor-induced membrane translocation of protein kinase C (PKC)gamma as the likely mechanism responsible for adverse behavioral effects of prenatal phenobarbital exposure. We therefore explored whether behavioral and synaptic defects could be reversed in adulthood by nicotine administration. Pregnant mice were give

Combined alpha- and beta-receptor inhibition in the treatment of hypertension.

Both beta- and alpha-adrenergic mechanisms are important in the control of blood pressure; alpha-mediated vasoconstriction is responsible for the regulation of vascular tone, and beta-mediated responses stimulate the heart directly and indirectly by liberating renin and affecting vascular smooth muscle tone. beta-Adrenergic blocking drugs have long been established in the treatment of hypertension. The development of drugs which combine this action with an alpha-blocking effect represents an additional mode of action to lower the blood pressure. Numerous studies have demonstrated that labetalo

RP-HPLC-ESI-MS characterization of novel peptide fragments related to rat parotid secretory protein in parasympathetic induced saliva.

Two peptides (MW 1211.7 and 928.5 Da) were detected by RP-HPLC-ESI-MS analysis of parotid saliva secreted upon continuous parasympathetic stimulation. The peptide with the higher mass (PSPFr-A) corresponded to the N-terminal dodecapeptide (Fragment 1-12) of rat parotid secretory protein (PSP), while the peptide with the lower mass (PSPFr-B) corresponded to the 4-12 fragment of the same protein. During stimulation, the PSPFr-A secretion increased, while the PSPFr-B secretion decreased (HPLC-ESI-MS). In the presence of cycloheximide, PSPFr-A was not demonstrated, while the PSPFr-B secretion decr
