BACKGROUND: Mid-gut volvulus is a rare complication of pregnancy, where torsion of the small bowel around its mesentery can result in extensive bowel infarction. Postoperative idiopathic intussusception is considered to be a distinct entity, and has been reported following different operations. We present a 45-year-old female with postoperative ileoileal intussusception following a transverse loop colostomy for sigmoid volvulus, in which there was a kinked loop of bowel forming the lead point. The pathogenesis and literature review of this disorder is discussed.

Case presentation and literature review for intestinal malrotation presenting in an adult. Although the number of patients with this condition that escape infancy undiagnosed is not clear, it is clear that when the rare patient presents as an adult it can be a perplexing situation for surgeons not familiar with the presenting signs and anatomy. We report a clinical case of a persistent left superior vena cava discovered in a 50-year-old female patient when a port-a-cath was inserted. This already seldom malformation was associated with an arteria lusoria and polysplenia with left inferior vena cava with hemiazygos continuation, right-sided stomach, short pancreas, preduodenal portal vein and intestinal malrotation, but without any cardiac abnormalities.

The sigmoid colon is the most frequent site for a volvulus due to anatomical and pathological reasons. When the rotation of the loop occurs slowly, the sigma can greatly blow up and stretch. We report the clinical case of an 80-year-old woman admitted to our Department for an enormous volvulus of sigmoid colon. Physical examination, abdominal X-ray and CT-scan were performed to diagnose the disease. Traditionally, gastrointestinal contrast studies have been the mainstay of evaluating infantile gastrointestinal problems. Because of technological advancements, good ultrasonography (USG) machines can provide high-resolution images with graphic anatomical clarity, especially in infants and children and thus change the traditional diagnostic trends. In this article, we illustrate the USG appearances of various causes of gastrointestinal obstruction in infants and discuss the role of USG in their evaluation.

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: This report emphasizes the significance of acknowledging infrequent yet severe complications such as bowel perforation and transanal protrusion post ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) surgery. PURPOSE: To evaluate gastrointestinal tract (GIT) perforations in very low birth weight infants and the effects on neurodevelopmental outcome.
METHODS: Between 2000 and 2017 all cases with GIT perforation were analyzed regarding causes, associated morbidities and neurodevelopmental outcome and compared with matched (gestational age, birth weight, gender, year of birth) by 1:2 controls.

From 1972 to 1990, 69 cases of gastroschisis were treated at Akron Children's Hospital Medical Center. Eighty-one percent of these patients underwent primary closure of their abdominal wall defect. Thirteen of 69 patients (19%) required Silastic silos with final closure in an average of 7.8 days.
