Unravelling the gut-brain connection: a systematic review of migraine and the gut microbiome.

BACKGROUND: There is substantial evidence linking migraines to gastrointestinal (GI) issues. Conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome and colitis often co-occur with migraines and GI symptoms are common among migraine patients. However, the evidence supporting the efficacy of gut microbiome-targeted therapies for managing migraines is limited. This systematic review aimed to describe the existing evidence of the gut microbiome in patients with migraine compared to healthy individuals. Additionally, it sought to examine how therapies targeting the gut microbiome including prebiotics, probiot

Traumatic Brain Injury and Gut Microbiome: The Role of the Gut-Brain Axis in Neurodegenerative Processes.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: A deeper understanding of the communication network between the gut microbiome and the central nervous system, termed the gut-brain axis (GBA), has revealed new potential targets for intervention to prevent the development of neurodegenerative disease associated with tramatic brain injury (TBI). This review aims to comprehensively examine the role of GBA post-traumatic brain injury (TBI). RECENT FINDINGS: The GBA functions through neural, metabolic, immune, and endocrine systems, creating bidirectional signaling pathways that modulate brain and gastrointestinal (GI) tract p

The antimicrobial alternative precursor-derived peracetic acid and zinc oxide lead to a sex dependent microbial modulation in weaning piglets.

Several authors described the sexual dimorphism of the gut microbiota in pigs and other animals in relation to sex-specific modulation following interventions such as diet or prebiotics and probiotics. These differences can also influence the host phenotype through the bi-directional pathways of the microbiota-gut-brain axis and could ultimately impact an animal's welfare and well-being. Postweaning diarrhoea is a multifactorial disease that occurs in piglets and is characterised by the sudden diet change from the sow milk to solid feedstuff, with moderate to heavy diarrhoea, accompanied by de

Machine learning as an artificial intelligence application in management of chronic hepatitis B virus infection.

Let's review the role of gut microbiota in pathogenesis of chronic hepatitis B infection as addressed in by Zhu et al. Zhu et al used high-throughput technology to characterize the microbial ecosystems, which led to an explosion of various types of molecular profiling data, such as metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, and metabolomics. To analyze such data, machine learning (ML) algorithms have shown to be useful for identifying key molecular signatures, discovering potential patient stratifications, and, particularly, for generating models that can accurately predict phenotypes. Strong evidence

["Pseudoneurotransmission" and gut microbiome - brain communication in neuropsychiatric disorders].

The gut microbiome, which comprises symbiotic bacteria colonizing the human digestive tract, undergoes dynamic changes during the lifespan, as evidenced by the fact that the number of species and the diversity of their composition decrease significantly with age. The aim of this review is to illuminate bilateral neuroimmunological pathways that determine the role of gut microbiome dysbiosis, not only as a cause but also as a byproduct of many neurodegenerative diseases of the CNS, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD), but also in the frame of several behavioral and psy

Relationship between gut microbiota and the pathogenesis of gestational diabetes mellitus: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a form of gestational diabetes mellitus characterized by insulin resistance and abnormal function of pancreatic beta cells. In recent years, genomic association studies have revealed risk and susceptibility genes associated with genetic susceptibility to GDM. However, genetic predisposition cannot explain the rising global incidence of GDM, which may be related to the increased influence of environmental factors, especially the gut microbiome. Studies have shown that gut microbiota is closely related to the occurrence and development of GDM.

Infant formulas for the treatment of functional gastrointestinal disorders: A position paper of the ESPGHAN Nutrition Committee.

Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID), such as infant regurgitation, infant colic, and functional constipation, are common and typically physiological phenomena during the early months of an infant's life and account for frequent consultations with pediatricians. Various infant formulas are marketed for their management and are frequently given by parents to infants before a medical consultation. However, the evidence supporting their effectiveness is limited and some have altered nutritional compositions when compared to standard formulas. Thus, these products should only be used under

Novel dietary strategies to manage sarcopenia.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Sarcopenia is a wasting disease, mostly age-related in which muscle strength and mass decline, such as physical performance. With aging, both lower dietary protein intake and anabolic resistance lead to sarcopenia. Moreover, aging and sarcopenia display low-grade inflammation, which also worsen muscle condition. In this review, we focused on these two main targets to study dietary strategies. RECENT FINDINGS: The better understanding in mechanisms involved in sarcopenia helps building combined dietary approaches including physical activity that would slow the disease progre

Altered Intestinal Production of Volatile Fatty Acids in Dogs Triggered by Lactulose and Psyllium Treatment.

The intestinal microbiome of dogs can be influenced by a number of factors such as non-starch polysaccharides as well as some non-digestible oligo- and disaccharides. These molecules are only decomposed by intestinal anaerobic microbial fermentation, resulting in the formation of volatile fatty acids (VFAs), which play a central role in maintaining the balance of the intestinal flora and affecting the health status of the host organism. In the present study, the effects of lactulose and psyllium husk (Plantago ovata) were investigated regarding their influence on concentrations of various VFAs

Phytochemicals in traditional Chinese medicine can treat gout by regulating intestinal flora through inactivating NLRP3 and inhibiting XOD activity.

OBJECTIVES: Gout is a common disease caused by hyperglycemia. Traditional drugs for gout have both good therapeutic effects and serious side effects. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is one of the potential sources of modern medicine, and is the development of new drugs for many diseases, including gout. TCM is an indispensable part of gout treatment. Compared with anti-gout medication commonly used in clinic (e.g. the xanthine oxidase inhibitors allopurinol and febuxostat), traditional Chinese medicine has fewer side effects in the treatment of gout and can safely control serum uric acid an

Improved Efficacy of Oral Immunotherapy Using Non-Digestible Oligosaccharides in a Murine Cow's Milk Allergy Model: A Potential Role for Foxp3+ Regulatory T Cells.

BACKGROUND: Oral immunotherapy (OIT) is a promising therapeutic approach to treat food allergic patients. However, there are some concerns regarding its safety and long-term efficacy. The use of non-digestible oligosaccharides might improve OIT efficacy since they are known to directly modulate intestinal epithelial and immune cells in addition to acting as prebiotics. AIM: To investigate whether a diet supplemented with plant-derived fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) supports the efficacy of OIT in a murine cow's milk allergy model and to elucidate the potential mechanisms involved. Growth of infants consuming whey-predominant term infant formulas with a protein content of 1.8 g/100 kcal: a multicenter pooled analysis of individual participant data.

BACKGROUND: High protein intake during infancy may contribute to obesity later in life in infants who are not exclusively breastfed. Lowering the protein content of infant formula so it is closer to that of mature breast milk may reduce long-term risk of overweight or obesity in formula-fed infants. OBJECTIVE: We assessed the effects of whey-predominant formulas with a protein content of 1.8 g/100 kcal (lower than that in most current formulas and closer to breast milk) on infant growth by comparing against WHO growth standards and breastfed infants. DESIGN: A multicenter pooled analysis was

Gut-ocular surface axis in dry eye disease: phenotype-specific mechanisms, evidence, and microbiome-targeted interventions.

Dry eye disease is a multifactorial, heterogeneous ocular surface disorder characterized primarily by an imbalance in tear film homeostasis. The traditional classification into "aqueous deficiency" and "evaporative" types fails to fully account for the differences in its inflammatory biology, clinical manifestations, and treatment responses. In recent years, the gut microbiota has been implicated in influencing ocular surface homeostasis through immune-inflammatory, metabolic-barrier, and neuroimmune pathways; however, the magnitude of its effects and their biological significance may vary dep

Effect of probiotics and related supplements on glycemic control in pediatric patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus: a systematic review and meta-analysis of clinical trials.

OBJECTIVE: Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is a common autoimmune disease in children, characterized by the destruction of pancreatic β-cells. Despite treatment advancements, many patients struggle with glycemic control. Recent research suggests the gut microbiome plays a role in T1DM, with dysbiosis contributing to its onset. Probiotics may help improve glycemic control and reduce inflammation, but their effects in children with T1DM are unclear. This study systematically reviews the impact of probiotics and related supplements on glycemic control in pediatric T1DM patients. METHODS: This st

Dysbiosis and Neurodegeneration in ALS: Unraveling the Gut-Brain Axis.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a neurodegenerative disorder marked by the progressive degeneration of motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. Despite decades of research, ALS remains incurable, diagnostically elusive, and is accompanied by rapid clinical decline, morbidity, and mortality. Its pathophysiology involves a complex interplay of genetic mutations (SOD1, C9/f72), environmental triggers, oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and the accumulation of misfolded proteins, such as TDP-43 and SOD1. These factors disrupt cellular homeostasis ag
