Modulating effects of maternal fish consumption on the occurrence of respiratory symptoms in early infancy attributed to prenatal exposure to fine particles.

The purpose of the study was to test the hypothesis whether infants with higher prenatal exposure to fine particles (PM(2.5)) are at greater risk of developing respiratory symptoms and whether fish consumption in pregnancy may modulate the effect. The study was carried out in a cohort of 465 newborns in Krakow (Poland) who have been followed over the first 2 years of life and for whom data on the occurrence of respiratory symptoms and measurements of personal air monitoring in the second trimester of pregnancy were available. The incidence risk ratio (IRR) of respiratory symptoms due to prenat

Confounder selection in environmental epidemiology: assessment of health effects of prenatal mercury exposure.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study is to compare different approaches to the identification of confounders needed for analyzing observational data. Whereas standard analysis usually is conducted as if the confounders were known a priori, selection uncertainty also must be taken into account. METHODS: Confounders were selected by using backward elimination (BE), change in estimate (CIE) method, Akaike information criterion, Bayesian information criterion (BIC), and an empirical approach using a priori information. A modified ridge regression estimator, which shrinks effects of confounders towar

Food-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis--update and current data.

Exercise-induced anaphylaxis (EIA) is defined as the onset of allergic symptoms during, or immediately after, exercise, the clinical signs being various degrees of urticaria, angioedema, respiratory and gastrointestinal signs and even anaphylactic shock. Food-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis (FDEIA) introduces food in the syndrome and is revealed by a chronological sequence in which food intake, followed by exercise, induces symptoms after a varying period. When the food intake and the exercise are independent of each other, there are no symptoms. FDEIA is not very frequent. Identifying

[Urinary and blood markers of internal mercury dose in workers from a chlorakali plant and in subjects not occupationally exposed: relation to dental amalgam and fish consumption].

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this paper was both to evaluate the internal dose of Hg in occupationally exposed workers (35 Chloralkali workers) compared to that of non occupationally exposed controls (40 workers of the same plant of Portotorres and 22 residents on the island of Carloforte, usual consumers of local fish, mostly tuna fish with relatively high Hg levels) and to assess the relevance of environmental and individual exposure factors linked to lifestyle, sea fish consumption and amalgam fillings. METHODS: All subjects filled out a questionnaire concerning the working history and lifestyle

Association of hypersensitivity to the nematode Anisakis simplex with HLA class II DRB1*1502-DQB1*0601 haplotype.

Anisakiasis as well as allergic and anaphylactoid reactions to Anisakis simplex antigens are recently identified clinical entities. They are relatively frequent in countries with habitual raw food consumption, often in the form of large amounts of fish and sea food products. In this communication the relationship between HLA class II alleles and the IgE-specific immune response to A. simplex allergen was studied in a defined population in Northern Spain. Individuals with immediate-type Anisakis hypersensitivity and healthy controls were examined for HLA-DRB1, DQB1 and DQA1 alleles by sequence-

[Determination of domoic acid in seawater by solid phase extraction-liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry].

Domoic acid (DA) can poison or even be fatal to marine mammals, and poses a potential risk to human health via transmission through the food chain. The level of DA in seawater will affect the safety of seafood. Therefore, a powerful method for the detection of DA in seawater, especially in the coastal mariculture zone, is needed. In order to identify different concentration levels of DA in real seawater, in this study, a method was established for the determination of trace DA in seawater by SPE-LC-MS/MS. First, the LC-MS/MS instrument and sample pretreatment conditions were optimized. Subsequ

Oceans and Human Health (OHH): a European perspective from the Marine Board of the European Science Foundation (Marine Board-ESF).

The oceans and coastal seas provide mankind with many benefits including food for around a third of the global population, the air that we breathe and our climate system which enables habitation of much of the planet. However, the converse is that generation of natural events (such as hurricanes, severe storms and tsunamis) can have devastating impacts on coastal populations, while pollution of the seas by pathogens and toxic waste can cause illness and death in humans and animals. Harmful effects from biogenic toxins produced by algal blooms (HABs) and from the pathogens associated with micro

Mercury exposure and risk of cardiovascular disease in two U.S. cohorts.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to methylmercury from fish consumption has been linked to a potentially increased risk of cardiovascular disease, but evidence from prior studies is equivocal. Beneficial effects of the ingestion of fish and selenium may also modify such effects. METHODS: Among subjects from two U.S. cohorts (a total of 51,529 men and 121,700 women) whose toenail clippings had been stored, we prospectively identified incident cases of cardiovascular disease (coronary heart disease and stroke) in 3427 participants and matched them to risk-set-sampled controls according to age, sex, race, a

Fish consumption and frying of fish in relation to type 2 diabetes incidence: a prospective cohort study of Swedish men.

PURPOSE: Epidemiological evidence on the association between fish consumption and risk of type 2 diabetes is heterogeneous across geographical regions. Differences related to fish consumption pattern could possibly help explain the discrepancy between the findings. We therefore aimed to investigate the association between fish consumption (total, fried, specific fish items) and type 2 diabetes incidence, taking exposure to contaminants present in fish (polychlorinated biphenyls and methyl mercury) into consideration. METHODS: The population-based Cohort of Swedish Men, including 35,583 men ag

Children's health risk and benefits of fish consumption: risk indices based on a diet diary follow-up of two weeks.

Several epidemiological studies indicate that fish intake is associated with neurocognitive development and visual outcomes in children attributed to long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). However, methylmercury (MeHg) represents the most toxic and abundant form of environmental mercury (Hg) exposure to humans and exposure occurs primarily through fish consumption. The objective of the study was to describe fish consumption during childhood in Portugal, estimating the intake of Hg from fish and calculating the indices of risk. The group consisted of 233 infants and students aged 7-11 y
