A 12-months study on bancroftian filariasis was carried out in the Igwun basin, Nigeria. A total of 1,418 individuals (768 males, and 650 females) were examined for microfilaremia and clinical filarial stigmata. There were 14.3% and 11.1% male and female point prevalence rates, respectively, and an overall prevalence of 12.8%. Prevalence rates and microfilarial density increased with age. The highest mff density of 35 mff/20 ml blood occurred in the 40-49 year old male individuals. Disease rates of 55.5 and 65.3% were recorded for males and females respectively. Chyluria (9.3% males, 16.7% fem

BACKGROUND: Mosquitoes are key arbovirus vectors and understanding their blood-feeding habits is crucial to elucidate potential pathogen transmission dynamics. Forest edge habitats, where natural and human-modified environments intersect, can enhance interactions among humans, wildlife, and mosquitoes, potentially enabling viral spillover and spillback. Characterizing these interactions is essential for assessing public health risks associated with diseases and guiding targeted vector management strategies.
METHODS: Female mosquitoes were collected across forest edge habitats in the Adolpho D

BACKGROUND OBJECTIVES: Accurate discrimination of mosquito vectors is essential for entomological surveillance in India, where multiple Anopheles, Aedes and Culex species transmit malaria, lymphatic filariasis and arboviral diseases. However, routine species identifications are challenged by cryptic and morphologically similar taxa. Furthermore, population genetic information of major mosquito vectors remains elusive.
METHODS: A total of 265 adult mosquitoes representing 21 species from four mosquito genera and one non-mosquito dipteran genus ( Chironomus ) used as an outgroup, were collected

BACKGROUND: Malaria and dengue fever are transmitted by female mosquitoes of the Anopheles and Aedes genera, respectively. These diseases are among the most prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa, with dengue fever posing an increasingly significant threat. In this context, studying the species diversity of vectors, as well as their bionomics, including their ecological and behavioral traits, is essential for a better understanding of transmission dynamics, and for guiding appropriate vector control strategies. This study aims to characterize the species diversity and human bite rates of malaria and

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Japanese Encephalitis is a disease of central nervous system caused by Japanese Encephalitis Virus (JEV), a flavi virus transmitted by culex mosquitoes. Only < 1% of the infected people develop symptoms and among symptomatic cases, around 1/3rd die and remaining 30–50% develop persisted neurological damage. Here, we present an unusual case of 30 years male with severe neurological manifestations requiring intubation and ICU admission for 68 days but miraculously recovering completely without any residual neurological deficits. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case o

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a parasitic disease-causing severe pain, disfiguring, and disabling clinical conditions such as lymphoedema and hydrocoele that are associated with morbidity and stigma. The disease has been targeted for global elimination with the annual mass drug administration (MDA) strategy. We have evaluated the need to implement mass drug administration against W. bancrofti infection in urban zones of Monrovia using both serology and molecular Xenomonitoring (XM).
METHODOLOGY: Confirmatory mapping protocols recommended by WHO were carried out in the four health d

Piperonyl butoxide (PBO)-synergized pyrethroid products are widely available for the control of pyrethroid-resistant mosquitoes. To date, no study has examined mosquito resistance after pre-exposure to PBO and subsequent enzymatic activity when exposed to PBO-synergized insecticides. We used Culex quinquefasciatus Say (Diptera: Culicidae), an important vector of arboviruses and lymphatic filariasis, as a model to examine the insecticide resistance mechanisms of mosquitoes to PBO-synergized pyrethroid using modified World Health Organization tube bioassays and biochemical analysis of metabolic

Achieving elimination of lymphatic filariasis (LF) as a public health problem requires a minimum of five effective rounds of mass drug administration (MDA) and demonstrating low prevalence in subsequent assessments. The first assessments recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) are sentinel and spot-check sites-referred to as pre-transmission assessment surveys (pre-TAS)-in each implementation unit after MDA. If pre-TAS shows that prevalence in each site has been lowered to less than 1% microfilaremia or less than 2% antigenemia, the implementation unit conducts a TAS to determine wh

BACKGROUND: The recent reports of Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus populations in Turkey, in parallel with the territorial expansion identified in several surrounding countries, have raised concerns about the establishment and re-establishment of these invasive Aedes mosquitoes in Turkey. This cross-sectional study was performed to detect Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus in regions of recent incursions, and screen for viral pathogens known to be transmitted elsewhere by these species.
METHODOLOGY: Mosquitoes were collected at several locations in Artvin, Rize and Trabzon provinces of the Blac

West Nile virus (WNV) and Zika virus (ZIKV) are mosquito-borne viral infections. Over the past few decades, WNV has been associated with several outbreaks involving high numbers of neuroinvasive diseases among humans. The recent re-emergence of ZIKV has been associated with congenital malformation and also with Guillain-Barre syndrome in adults. The geographic range of arthropod-borne viruses has been rapidly increasing in recent years. The objectives of this study were to determine the presence of IgG specific antibodies and the genome of WNV and ZIKV in human samples, as well as WNV and ZIKV

Currently, mosquito vector control is facing a number of key challenges, including the rapid development of resistance to synthetic pesticides and the recent spread of aggressive arbovirus outbreaks. The biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) is currently considered an environmental friendly alternative to the employ of pyrethroids, carbamates and microbial agents (e.g. Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis), since AgNPs are easy to produce, effective and stable in the aquatic environment. However, their biophysical features showed wide variations according to the botanical agent using

BACKGROUND: Mayotte, a small island in the Indian Ocean, has been affected for many years by vector-borne diseases. Malaria, Bancroftian filariasis, dengue, chikungunya and Rift Valley fever have circulated or still circulate on the island. They are all transmitted by Culicidae mosquitoes. To limit the impact of these diseases on human health, vector control has been implemented for more than 60 years on Mayotte. In this study, we assessed the resistance levels of four major vector species (Anopheles gambiae, Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus, Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus) to two types of i

Natural and anthropogenic changes (e.g., land use change, pollution) will alter many environmental factors in the coming years, including the amount of solar radiation reaching the earth's surface. Alterations in solar radiation exposure is likely to impact the ecologies of many living organisms, including invertebrates that inhabit aquatic habitats. In this study, we assessed the effect of UV-B radiation on the metabolic rates and fitness (survival, development time, body size) of Aedes albopictus and Culex pipiens mosquitoes and the activity of their microbial food resources in experimental

Gaining a better understanding of parasite infection dynamics in the vector mosquito (Diptera: Culicidae) population is central to improving knowledge regarding the transmission, persistence and hence control of lymphatic filariasis. Here, we use data on mosquito feeding experiments collated from the published literature to examine the available evidence regarding the functional form of the first component of this parasite-vector relationship for Wuchereria bancrofti (Filarioidea: Onchocercidae) causing Bancroftian filariasis, i.e. the rate of microfilariae (mf) uptake from the blood of infect

To investigate past infection in and transmission of Rift Valley fever (RVF) virus to humans within an endemic focus, we undertook a retrospective cohort study of the seminomadic Peul people living in sub-Saharan northcentral Senegal. Residents of the rural settlement of Yonofere five years of age or older were studied during February-May 1989. Anti-RVF virus IgG was found in blood samples of 22.3% of 273 persons who responded to a standard questionnaire; none had IgM antibodies. Seropositivity was similar for males (25.4%) and females (21.1%), increased markedly with age for both sexes, and v

BACKGROUND: Aerial applications of insecticides that target adult mosquitoes are widely used to reduce transmission of West Nile virus to humans during periods of epidemic risk. However, estimates of the reduction in abundance following these treatments typically focus on single events, rely on pre-defined, untreated control sites and can vary widely due to stochastic variation in population dynamics and trapping success unrelated to the treatment.
METHODS: To overcome these limitations, we developed generalized additive models fitted to mosquito surveillance data collected from CO2-baited tr

St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV; Flaviviridae; Flavivirus) is a member of the Japanese encephalitis serocomplex and a close relative of West Nile virus (WNV). Although SLEV remains endemic to the US, both levels of activity and geographical dispersal are relatively constrained when compared to the widespread distribution of WNV. In recent years, WNV appears to have displaced SLEV in California, yet both viruses currently coexist in Texas and several other states. It has become clear that viral swarm characterization is required if we are to fully evaluate the relationship between viral geno
