[The importance of the diet in the prevention of atherosclerosis progression].

The most common mechanism of the development of cardiovascular diseases is atherosclerosis, caused by genetic predisposition, hyperlipidemia, inflammation and metabolic disorders. Statins used in medicine inhibit endogenous cholesterol synthesis, but are characterized by diabetogenic effect, development of intolerance in 9.1%, and muscle symptoms in 10-25% of patients. Therefore, a well-chosen diet is important in atherosclerosis preventing. The aim of the research was to summarize modern concepts on the possibilities of preventing the development and progression of atherosclerosis with the he

Supplementation with Lactobacillus helveticus NS8 alleviated behavioral, neural, endocrine, and microbiota abnormalities in an endogenous rat model of depression.

INTRODUCTION: Major depressive disorder is a condition involving microbiota-gut-brain axis dysfunction. Increasing research aims to improve depression through gut microbiota regulation, including interventions such as probiotics, prebiotics, and fecal microbiota transplants. However, most research focuses on exogenous depression induced by chronic stress or drugs, with less attention given to endogenous depression. Additionally, research on gut mycobiota in depression is significantly less than that on gut bacteria. METHODS: In the present study, Wistar-Kyoto rats were used as an endogenous d

Precision synbiotics increase gut microbiome diversity and improve gastrointestinal symptoms in a pilot open-label study for autism spectrum disorder.

UNLABELLED: The efficacy of prebiotics and probiotics (synbiotics when combined) to improve symptoms associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has shown considerable inter-study variation, likely due to the complex, heterogeneous nature of the disorder and its associated behavioral, developmental, and gastrointestinal symptoms. Here, we present a precision synbiotic supplementation study in 296 children and adults diagnosed with ASD versus 123 age-matched neurotypical controls. One hundred seventy ASD participants completed the study. Baseline and post-synbiotic assessment of ASD and gast

Effect of synbiotic supplementation on production performance and severity of necrotic enteritis in broilers during an experimental necrotic enteritis challenge.

To evaluate the efficacy of synbiotic during a necrotic enteritis (NE) infection, a total of 360 day-old chicks were randomly assigned into 4 experimental groups in a 2 × 2 factorial setup: control, challenge, synbiotic (1 g/kg), and challenge + synbiotic, with 6 replicates. NE was induced by gavaging 1 × 104Eimeria maxima oocysts and 1 × 108 CFU/mL of Clostridium perfringens on d 14 (D14) and D19, 20, and 21, respectively. At D35, the NE challenge decreased the BW gain (P < 0.001) and increased feed conversion ratio (P = 0.03), whereas synbiotic supplementation decreased the feed intake (P =

Protective Effects of Intestinal Gallic Acid in Neonatal Dairy Calves Against Extended-Spectrum β-lactamase Producing Enteroaggregative Escherichia coli Infection: Modulating Intestinal Homeostasis and Colitis.

Calf diarrhea induced by enteroaggregative E. coli (EAEC) spreads fast among young ruminants, causing continuous hazard to dairy industry. Antimicrobial drug abuse aggravates the incidence rate of multi-drug resistant (MDR) extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing E. coli (ESBL-EC). However, knowledge of detection and significance of disease-related biomarkers in neonatal female calves are still limited. Gallic acid (GA), a natural secondary metabolite mostly derived from plants, has attracted increasing attention for its excellent anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative properties. However, it is

Gut Microbiota and Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus: The Effect of Mediterranean Diet.

Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is a chronic autoimmune disease resulting from a complex interplay between genetic susceptibility and environmental factors. Regarding the latter, gut microbiota has a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of T1DM, by affecting intestinal permeability, molecular mimicry, and modulating innate and adaptive immune system, as described in several previous studies. The composition of the gut microbiota is largely influenced by diet. Some observational studies have shown that a low fiber intake is associated with the development of many inflammatory and immune-mediated di

Unraveling the structural and molecular properties of 34-residue levans with various branching degrees by replica exchange molecular dynamics simulations.

Levan has various potential applications in the pharmaceutical and food industries, such as cholesterol-lowering agents and prebiotics, due to its beneficial properties, which depend on its length and branching degree. A previous study also found that the branching degree of levan affected anti-tumor activities against SNU-1 and HepG2 tumor cell lines. Despite its promising potential, the properties of levans with different branching degrees are not well understood at the molecular level. In two models of the generalized Born implicit solvent (GBHCT and GBOBC1), we employed replica-exchange mo

Understanding Microbiome Data: A Primer for Clinicians.

The human gut contains 1014 bacteria and many other micro-organisms such as Archaea, viruses and fungi. This gut microbiota has co-evolved with host determinants through symbiotic and co-dependent relationships. Bacteria, which represent 10 times the number of human cells, form the most depicted part of this black box owing to new tools. Re-evaluating the gut microbiota showed how this entity participates in gut physiology and beyond this in human health. Studying and handling this real 'hidden organ' remains a challenge for clinicians. In this review, we aimed to bring information about gut m

Detection of intestinal bifidobacteria and lactobacilli in patients with Hirschsprung's disease associated enterocolitis.

BACKGROUND: The etiology of Hirschsprung's disease associated enterocolitis (HAEC) is unknown. Previous investigations have suggested that several factors such as dilation of proximal bowel, changes in colonic mucosal defence, and overgrowth of toxigenic bacteria may be related with it. This study was to quantify bifidobacteria and lactobacilli in the feces of Hirschsprung's disease (HD) patients with or without enterocolitis and those of normal children. METHODS: Fresh stool specimens were collected at the first three days of the admission from 30 HD patients (aged 2 weeks to 2 years) and 15

Fructo-oligosaccharides and iron bioavailability in anaemic rats: the effects on iron species distribution, ferroportin-1 expression, crypt bifurcation and crypt cell proliferation in the caecum.

The present study investigated the effects of fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) on the bioavailability of Fe from ferric pyrophosphate (FP), a water-insoluble compound, in Fe-deficient anaemic rats that were subjected to a Hb repletion assay. Male Wistar rats (n 64) were fed adequate or low (8 mg/kg) Fe diets for 15 d followed by 1 or 2 weeks of Fe repletion with diets providing 35 mg Fe/kg as ferrous sulphate (FS), FP or FP that was mixed with 7·5% FOS in the form of yacon flour or Raftilose P95 (RAF), a purified source of FOS. The effects of FOS were observed within the 1st week of the repletion

Effect of yeast cell product (CitriStim) supplementation on broiler performance and intestinal immune cell parameters during an experimental coccidial infection.

This experiment studied the effects of whole yeast cell product supplementation on broiler production parameters, fecal coccidial oocyst counts, and local and systemic immune parameters following an experimental coccidial infection. Birds were fed 0, 0.1, or 0.2% whole yeast cell product (CitriStim). At 21 d of age, birds were challenged with live coccidial oocysts. Supplementation with whole yeast cell product increased BW gain between 0 and 12 d (P = 0.01) postcoccidial challenge. Birds supplemented with 0.2% Citristim had better (P = 0.01) feed efficiency between 0 and 12 d postcoccidial in

Dietary Fructooligosaccharide Is Associated with Improved Insulin Resistance, Reduced Romboutsia ilealis Abundance, and Modulation of GLP-1 Production in High-Fat Diet-Induced Obese Mice.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Obesity disrupts glucose homeostasis and insulin signaling, partly through altered gut hormone secretion and intestinal inflammation. Our previous work demonstrated that fructooligosaccharides (FOS), a prebiotic fiber, suppressed colonic inflammation, and modulated gut microbiota when administered with vitamin D supplementation. However, the effects of FOS on metabolic alterations, glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) production under obesogenic stimulation remains unclear. Here, we examined the effects of FOS on insulin resistance and GLP-1 production in high-fat diet (HFD)-

Soluble dietary fiber (Fibersol-2) decreased hunger and increased satiety hormones in humans when ingested with a meal.

We hypothesized that a digestion-resistant maltodextrin, Fibersol-2 (Archer Daniels Midland/Matsutani LLC, Decatur, IL, USA) may impact satiety by decreasing hunger, prolonging satiation, and/or increasing peripheral satiety signals. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study, healthy subjects (9 men and 10 women) underwent 3 treatments in which they consumed a standardized meal with a tea containing 0, 5, or 10 g of Fibersol-2. A visual analog scale questionnaire was given in 30-minute intervals to measure subjective appetite and satiety. Blood was drawn just before the

From weak to functional: network cooperativity effects in cyclic neutral (HF)m(NH3)n hydrogen bonded clusters.

Individual hydrogen bond (HB) energies and cooperativity contributions were characterized across 66 HBs in twelve cyclic neutral (HF)m(NH3)n clusters (m + n = 3-7) using a molecular tailoring approach (MTA)-based fragmentation method at the MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ level. In addition, we derive an explicit algebraic connection relating these MTA-derived HB descriptors to the conventional many-body expansion (MBE). The four HB types observed in the (HF)m(NH3)n clusters follow an unambiguous energetic hierarchy: F-H⋯N (mean 22.7 ± 4.1 kcal mol-1) > F-H⋯F (12.1 ± 3.3 kcal mol-1) > N-H⋯F ≈ N-H⋯N (both 4.7

Low-Molecular-Weight Polyols as Key Factors in Sulfur- and Borate-Mediated Protomembrane Formation Before the RNA World.

The emergence of biological membranes was a critical step in the origin of cellular life because compartmentalization enabled molecular concentration, selective interactions, and increasingly complex chemical evolution. While fatty acids are widely considered the primary constituents of primitive membranes, the origin of the hydrophilic molecular scaffolds required for more stable amphiphilic systems remains unresolved. In this review, we propose a new conceptual framework in which low-molecular-weight polyols-including ethylene glycol, glycerol, tetritols, and related sugar alcohols-served as

Gut and Gastric Dysbiosis in Hyperemesis Gravidarum: A Scoping Review of Microbiome-Targeted Evidence and Translational Pathways.

BACKGROUND: Hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) is defined by severe nausea and/or vomiting beginning in early pregnancy, impaired ability to eat or drink normally, and a marked restriction of daily activities. Although gastrointestinal dysbiosis has been proposed in HG, its role remains uncertain within the emerging growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15)-centered model of susceptibility. METHODS: Guided by PRISMA-ScR, this scoping review searched PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, publisher websites, and reference lists for contemporary evidence published between 1 January 2021 and 2 May 2026

Targeted detection of microbes in synbiotic medical foods SBD111 and SBD121 to evaluate gut persistence: a randomised, open label trial.

The viability and persistence of orally administered microbes in the human gut are essential to their biological function. We previously described the development of two synbiotic medical foods, SBD111 and SBD121, each comprising four food-derived microbial strains and prebiotic fibres for the dietary management of postmenopausal bone loss and rheumatoid arthritis, respectively. Here, we report a randomised, open-label clinical study examining gut persistence of SBD111 and SBD121 microbes by testing faecal samples from healthy adults following administration for seven days. Thirty-eight partic

Viruses help shape microbiome response to polyphenol rewiring of methane-suppressed peat microcosms.

Human activities are accelerating permafrost thaw and subsequent methane emissions from increased microbial activity, prompting microbiome engineering efforts as an emissions mitigation strategy. We recently demonstrated that catechin amendment could drastically reduce methane emissions (>80%) in peat microcosms by enriching catechin-degrading prokaryotes that outcompeted methanogens for hydrogen. However, viral contributions to such microbiome-level responses remain unexplored and we hypothesized that viral dynamics could help shape the microbiome response as nutrient amendments may alter cel
