OBJECTIVES: Infratemporal fossa (ITF) tumors are rare and little is known about their general epidemiology, making it sometimes difficult for clinicians, who seldom encounter them, to distinguish between benign and malignant forms on the basis of the initial clinical and radiological work-up alone. The objectives of this retrospective study were: (i) to determine the respective prevalences of the various histologic types of ITF tumor, and (ii) to assess associations between certain clinical and radiological features and malignancy.
METHODS: A single-center observational study in a university

Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2B (MEN 2B) is a rare autosomal dominant process characterized by medullary thyroid carcinoma, pheochromocytoma, and mucosal neuromas. A point mutation at codon 918 of the RET protooncogene has been observed in approximately 90% of patients and families with MEN 2B. Mucosal neuromas are the most consistent and distinctive feature (100% of patients) of MEN 2B and are considered pathognomonic. We describe a 35-year-old woman with mucosal neuromas of the lower lip and tongue that appeared in early childhood. Examination did not reveal other abnormalities. After a

The ease of performing ultrasonic examination and its noninvasive nature make it especially useful in seriously ill patients. We present 12 patients with lesions that can be identified by ultrasound, along with a discussion of the differential diagnosis. Ultrasonically guided percutaneous aspiration biopsy can confirm the diagnosis in selected patients.

Cutaneous clear cell proliferations encompass a heterogenous group of several primary cutaneous neoplasms and metastatic tumors with different histogenesis. Many of these clear cell proliferations may seem strikingly similar under the microscope resulting in challenging diagnosis. In many of these clear cell lesions, the reason for the clear or pale appearance of proliferating cells is unknown, whereas in other ones, this clear cell appearance is due to intracytoplasmic accumulation of glycogen, mucin, or lipid. Artifacts of tissue processing and degenerative phenomenon may also be responsible

Various tumors can involve the orbital space. Although orbital tumors are rare, these sight-threatening and possibly life-threatening disorders consist of a broad disease spectrum. The purpose of the study is to determine the prevalence of orbital tumors presenting in a tertiary eye care centre and evaluate their Demographic pattern and Clinical findings. This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in the Department of Oculoplasty, Ispahani Islamia Eye Institute & Hospital from August 2019 to July 2020. 30 patients were selected of all age and sex presented with primary orbital tumors

BACKGROUND: Acoustic neuromas are also called vestibular schwannoma, acoustic neurinoma, vestibular neuroma, and acoustic neurofibroma. These are tumors that evolve from Schwann cell sheath and can be either intracranial or extra-axial. They usually occur adjacent to the cochlear or vestibular nerve. Anatomically, acoustic neuromas tend to occupy the cerebellopontine angle. About 20% of internal carotid artery (ICA) tumors are meningiomas and may occur elsewhere in the brain. Bilateral acoustic neuromas also tend to be exclusively in individuals with type 2 neurofibromatosis.

Fibrous orbital tumors present clinically and radiographically in a broad spectrum ranging from a benign mass, to locally aggressive tumor, to invasive malignancy. Pathologic analysis and diagnosis are often challenging, usually based on a combination of light microscopy, immunohistochemistry, and electron microscopic findings. Some light microscopic and immunohistochemical findings, however, are relatively characteristic. A storiform or cartwheel pattern and vimentin staining are characteristic of fibrous histiocytoma. A herringbone pattern is usually found in fibrosarcoma. A "patternless pat

While primary intradural spinal tumors (PIST) are commonly treated by surgery, the use of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is typically considered when patients are either poor surgical candidates or have recurrent or unresectable tumors. However, the optimal use of SRS in the treatment of PISTs and its efficacy remains relatively unclear. Our aim with this study was to investigate the therapeutic response among PISTs treated with SRS. We performed a systematic literature search in five databases: Medline, Embase (Ovid), Scopus, Web of Science Advance and Cochrane Central from inception to July

Plexiform schwannoma (PS) is one of the least common histologic variants of schwannoma. It shows a plexiform growth pattern and typically occurs in the dermis and subcutaneous tissue. Morphologically, PS can display a conventional, cellular, or mixed appearance. However, the frequent cellular morphology associated with hyperchromatic nuclei, increased mitoses, and plexiform growth can suggest a malignant process, mainly a high-grade malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST). The purpose of this study was to analyze the clinicopathologic features of deep-seated PS and compare them with th

Four groups of animals, each composed of 22 pregnant Wistar rats, were used in this study. Single intraperitoneal (IP) injections of ethylnitrosourea (ENU) at a dose of 15 mg/kg body weight (BW) were given to the animals of two groups on days 15 and 21 of pregnancy, respectively. The progeny of a third group received by subcutaneous injection (SC) the same dose of ENU, 15 mg/kg BW, on day 1 postnatally. The descendants of the fourth group served as untreated controls. The most striking findings were observed in the progeny of the mothers treated on day 15 of pregnancy, in which group 64 of 180

All patients undergoing neurological surgery are at risk for serious complications. Ischaemic damage presenting with hemiparesis or speech difficulties occurs in up to 6% of patients undergoing cerebral bypass procedures and other complicated neurosurgical procedures. Currently available methods for detection of such damage include the use of somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs) and electro-encephalography (EEG). Unfortunately, these techniques have false positives and may remain normal in the presence of severe focal neurological deficits. Early detection of potential deficits may prevent

BACKGROUND: Robotic-assisted surgery is gaining an increasing popularity in the past decades within the field of thoracic surgery, especially in mediastinal tumor resection. In the narrow space of the mediastinum surrounded by a complexity of anatomical structures, robotic-assisted thoracic surgery (RATS) shows its potential due to its enhanced dexterity, the three-dimensional view with great maneuverability and tremor adjustment in comparison to other minimal invasive techniques. Primary resection is the therapy of choice for most common mediastinal masses in the anterior (thymoma) and poster

From 1970 to 1989, 121 children with mediastinal masses of various sorts were seen in the Department of Pathology, Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne. The series is considered representative of the true incidence of these conditions in the state of Victoria, which had an average paediatric population during the time of this series of 900,000 children. The commonest cause of a mediastinal mass was NHL (36 cases). This was followed by HD (24 cases), then neuroblastoma and ganglioneuroma (16 and 9 cases respectively), duplication cysts (10 cases), teratomas (7 cases), neurofibroma (4 cases) and

The sensory and motor deficits of the CNS are varied, depending on the etiologic factors and the structures involved. Nevertheless, the clinical picture is predictable, provided one has an adequate knowledge of the neuroanatomy and the functions of the different fiber tracts, nuclei, and other specific regions of the brain and spinal cord. The purpose of this section is to provide an overall view of the sensory and motor deficits of the CNS, which will enable the clinician to treat these patients in a more objective and effective manner. Etiologically, the diseases affecting the CNS can be gro
