Evidence that climate change has caused 'emergence' of tick-borne diseases in Europe?

Even though tick-borne disease systems are highly susceptible to climatic influences, climate change to date is not necessarily the cause of the marked increased incidence of a variety of tick-borne diseases in many parts of Europe over the past two decades. To test for causality, rather than coincidence, we need to examine whether the right sorts of climate change have occurred at the right time and in the right places to account for the observed heterogeneous temporal and spatial patterns of tick-borne disease 'emergence'. Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) incidence, for example, showed a 3-fold

Ehrlichiosis in a golf-oriented retirement community.

BACKGROUND: Ehrlichiosis due to Ehrlichia chaffeensis usually occurs sporadically or in small clusters, with an annual incidence estimated at 3 to 5 cases per 100,000 population in areas of endemic disease. The putative principal vector is the Lone Star tick (Amblyomma americanum). We investigated an outbreak of ehrlichiosis that occurred in June 1993 among members of a golf-oriented retirement community (community A) in Tennessee. The community is densely wooded and borders a wildlife-management area where deer are numerous. METHODS: We conducted a case-control study, using medical-history r

Surveys on Coxiella burnetii infections in Swedish cattle, sheep, goats and moose.

BACKGROUND: Q fever is a zoonotic disease caused by the bacterium Coxiella burnetii. Prevalence data in ruminant species are important to support risk assessments regarding public and animal health. The aim was to investigate the presence of or exposure to C. burnetii in cattle, sheep, goats and moose, and to compare two enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs). National surveys of antibodies against C. burnetii were performed for dairy cattle (n=1537), dairy goats (n=58) and sheep (n=518). Bovine samples consisted of bulk milk, caprine of pooled milk, and ovine of pooled serum. Antibodies

Prevalence of Coxiella burnetii in ticks after a large outbreak of Q fever.

Q fever has emerged as an important human and veterinary public health problem in the Netherlands with major outbreaks in three consecutive years. Goat farms are probably the prime source from which Coxiella burnetii have spread throughout the environment, infecting people living in the vicinity. Coxiella burnetii infection not only spilled over from animal husbandry to humans but could also have spread to neighbouring wildlife and pets forming novel reservoirs and consequently posing another and lingering threat to humans, companion animals and livestock. In these cases, transmission routes o

Molecular epidemiology of rabies in Indonesia.

In order to clarify the genetic relationships and dynamics of rabies viruses that are epidemic in Indonesia, we determined and analyzed 1307 nucleotides of nucleoprotein genes of 34 rabies field isolates collected from Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Flores islands. Results of phylogenetic analysis indicated that rabies isolates in Indonesia formed one cluster, were of Asian lineage, and were closely related to a rabies isolate in China rather than to rabies isolates in Thailand, India or Sri Lanka. Rabies isolates in Indonesia were divided into three phylogroups (ID1, ID2 and ID3) tha

On the bulky appliances and artero-venous anastomoses in the vascular district of the base of the brain.

It has been studied the vascular territory of the base of the brain and it has been pointed out the presence of characteristical structural arrangements of the vasal wall and artero-venous anastomoses. The just mentioned characteristical structures are placed in points where a vessel divides itself or creates a collateral branch and their functional engagement is target-oriented to control the blood flux.

Multi-omics unravels testis-regulated genetic mechanism of musk secretion in muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus).

BACKGROUND: During the scent secretion period, adult male muskrats (Ondatra zibethicus) produce a musk-like fragrance similar to that of the forest musk deers (Moschus berezovskii). However, the underlying mechanism of scent secretion in muskrats were not well understood. Scent glands and testicular tissues from 2-year-old muskrats during non-scenting and scenting periods were analyzed using transcriptomics and metabolomics to identify key genes, metabolites, and pathways involved in scent secretion. RESULTS: Key findings include: (1) Significant differences were observed in the tissue struct

Roridin E and satratoxin H, macrocyclic trichothecene mycotoxins, induce endoplasmic reticulum stress-dependent apoptosis through ribosome interaction in B16 mouse melanoma cells.

Podostroma cornu-damae, commonly known as the red deer's horn mushroom, is a highly toxic species responsible for severe poisonings characterized by vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, impaired consciousness, and potentially death. This mushroom is notorious for its content of macrocyclic trichothecene mycotoxins. In our ongoing research aimed at discovering bioactive natural compounds, we isolated thirteen macrocyclic trichothecene mycotoxins (P1-P13) from the methanol extract of a plate culture of P. cornu-damae. The chemical structures of these mycotoxins were elucidated through analysis of nu

Using Data Mining and Network Analysis to Infer Arboviral Dynamics: The Case of Mosquito-Borne Flaviviruses Reported in Mexico.

Given the significant impact of mosquito-borne flaviviruses (MBFVs) on both human and animal health, predicting their dynamics and understanding their transmission cycle is of the utmost importance. Usually, predictions about the distribution of priority pathogens, such as Dengue, Yellow fever, West Nile Virus and St. Louis encephalitis, relate abiotic elements to simple biotic components, such as a single causal agent. Furthermore, focusing on single pathogens neglects the possibility of interactions and the existence of common elements in the transmission cycles of multiple pathogens. A nece

A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis on Hepatitis E Virus Detection in Farmed Ruminants.

Swine are widely recognized as the main reservoir of zoonotic HEV; however, a growing body of data on the HEV prevalence in farmed ruminants of different species also points to a potential route for HEV transmission through ruminants and ruminant products and by-products. Definite information on the zoonotic potential of ruminants is still absent or unclear, compelling the necessity for increasing knowledge on this. The aim of the current study was to analyze the state-of-the-art in this research topic and provide a summary of HEV detection and characterization in farmed ruminants. A total of

ESR and HPLC-EC analysis of ethanol oxidation to 1-hydroxyethyl radical: rapid reduction and quantification of POBN and PBN nitroxides.

Extensive ESR spin-trapping studies have shown that ethanol is oxidized to 1-hydroxyethyl radical (HER) by rat and deer mice liver microsomal systems. The ESR detection of POBN/HER nitroxide in bile, and formation of antibodies, which recognize HER adducts in alcoholics, suggest that HER is produced in vivo. In liver, where ethanol is primarily metabolized, only traces of PBN/HER nitroxide are documented. One limitation of the ESR spin-trapping technique, however, is that the nitroxides formed in the presence of cellular reductants can be metabolized to the corresponding ESR "silent" hydroxyla

Cadmium exposure in First Nations communities of the Northwest Territories, Canada: smoking is a greater contributor than consumption of cadmium-accumulating organ meats.

Traditional food consumption among northern populations is associated with improved nutrition but occasionally can also increase contaminant exposure. High levels of cadmium in the organs of moose from certain regions of the Northwest Territories, Canada, led to the release of consumption notices. These notices recommended that individuals limit their consumption of kidney and liver from moose harvested from the Southern Mackenzie Mountain. A human biomonitoring project was designed to better characterize exposure and risks from contaminants, including cadmium, among Dene/Métis communities of

Could immunomodulation be used to prevent prion diseases?

All prion diseases are currently without effective treatment and are universally fatal. The underlying pathogenesis of prion diseases (prionoses) is related to an autocatalytic conformational conversion of PrP(C) (C for cellular) to a pathological and infectious conformer known as PrP(Sc) (Sc for scrapie) or PrP(Res) (Res for proteinase K resistant). The past experience with variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, which originated from bovine spongiform encephalopathy, as well as the ongoing epidemic of chronic wasting disease has highlighted the necessity for effective prophylactic and/or therapeu

Brucella abortus strain RB51 vaccination in elk. I. Efficacy of reduced dosage.

Bovine brucellosis is a serious zoonotic disease affecting some populations of Rocky Mountain elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni) and bison (Bison bison) in the Greater Yellowstone Area, USA. The fear that elk and/or bison may spread Brucella abortus to livestock has prompted efforts to reduce or eliminate the disease in wildlife. Brucella abortus strain RB51 (RB51) vaccine has recently been approved for use in cattle. Unlike strain 19 vaccine, RB51 does not cause false positive reactions on standard brucellosis serologic tests. If effective, it may become the vaccine of choice for wildlife. In Febru

Treatment of hypoxemia during xylazine-tiletamine-zolazepam immobilization of wapiti.

Hypoxemia is a commonly observed complication during the chemical immobilization of wild ruminants. If severe and left untreated, it can predispose animals to arrhythmias, organ failure, and capture myopathy. The following prospective study was designed to measure the degree of hypoxemia in wapiti that were immobilized with a combination of xylazine and tiletamine-zolazepam and to assess the response to nasal oxygen therapy. Pulse oximetry and arterial blood gas analysis were used to assess the degree of hypoxemia prior to nasal insufflation of oxygen and to demonstrate any beneficial effects

Chronic generalized obliterative arteriopathy in cattle: a sequel to sheep-associated malignant catarrhal fever.

Malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) in cattle is generally associated with a short clinical course and a high case fatality rate (90-95%). The lesions in cattle that survive acute MCF for a prolonged period or appear to recover have not been documented. In a naturally occurring outbreak of MCF in a herd of beef cattle in Wyoming, 7 of 84 yearling heifers (8.3% of replacement herd) and 2 of 230 cows (0.9% of cow herd) developed clinical signs of pyrexia, mucopurulent discharge, bilateral keratitis, and weight loss following contact with ewes that had lambed 34-62 days earlier. Six of 9 affected cat

High Seroprevalence but Low Rate of Isolation of Toxoplasma gondii from Wild Elk (Cervus Canadensis) in Pennsylvania.

Toxoplasma gondii infections are prevalent in most warm-blooded animals worldwide. During the 2018 November hunting season in Pennsylvania, fresh (unfixed, not frozen) samples obtained from 99 harvested elk (Cervus canadensis) were tested for T. gondii infection. Antibodies to T. gondii were detected in 69 of 99 (69.7%) elk tested by the modified agglutination test (MAT, 1:25 cut-off). Tongues and hearts from 16 elk with high MAT titers (>1:200) were bioassayed for T. gondii by inoculation in outbred Swiss Webster (SW) and interferon-gamma gene knockout (KO) mice. Viable T. gondii was isolated

Subtype distribution of Blastocystis isolates from synanthropic and zoo animals and identification of a new subtype.

Blastocystis isolates from 56 Danish synanthropic and zoo animals, 62 primates primarily from United Kingdom (UK) collections and 16 UK primate handlers were subtyped by PCR, sequencing and phylogenetic analysis. A new subtype (ST) from primates and artiodactyls was identified and designated as Blastocystis sp. ST10. STs isolated from non-human primates (n=70) included ST3 (33%), ST8 (21%), ST2 (16%), ST5 (13%), ST1 (10%), ST4 (4%) and ST10 (3%). A high prevalence of ST8 was seen among primate handlers (25%). This ST is normally very rare in humans, suggesting that acquisition of Blastocystis
