Systematic review for non-surgical interventions for the management of late radiation proctitis.

Chronic radiation proctitis produces a range of clinical symptoms for which there is currently no recommended standard management. The aim of this review was to identify the various non-surgical treatment options for the management of late chronic radiation proctitis and evaluate the evidence for their efficacy. Synonyms for radiation therapy and for the spectrum of lower gastrointestinal radiation toxicity were combined in an extensive search strategy and applied to a range of databases. The included studies were those that involved interventions for the non-surgical management of late radiat

Christensenellaceae minuta modulates epithelial healing via PI3K-AKT pathway and macrophage differentiation in the colitis.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory disorder with an unsatisfactory cure rate and mucosal healing is a key treatment objective. Christensenellaceae minuta (C. minuta) has emerged as a next-generation of probiotic for maintaining intestinal health. We investigated the therapeutic efficacy of C. minuta in dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis, focusing on mucosal healing and the underlying mechanisms. C. minuta effectively alleviated colitis and promoted the regeneration of intestinal epithelial cells (IECs). Using 16S rRNA sequencing and metabolomics, we found that C. minut

Short Chain Fatty Acids Prevent Glyoxylate-Induced Calcium Oxalate Stones by GPR43-Dependent Immunomodulatory Mechanism.

Calcium oxalate (CaOx) stones are the most common type of kidney stones and are associated with high recurrence, short chain fatty acids (SCFAs), and inflammation. However, it remains uncertain whether SCFAs affect the formation of CaOx stones through immunomodulation. We first performed mass cytometry (CyTOF) and RNA sequencing on kidney immune cells with glyoxylate-induced CaOx crystals (to elucidate the landscape of the associated immune cell population) and explored the role of SCFAs in renal CaOx stone formation through immunomodulation. We identified 29 distinct immune cell subtypes in k

The Impact of Gut Microbiome on Metabolic Disorders During Catch-Up Growth in Small-for-Gestational-Age.

OBJECTIVE: Catch-up growth (CUG) in small for gestational age (SGA) leads to increased risk of metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular diseases in adults. It remains unclear if microbiota could play an important role in CUG-SGA independent of genetic or nutritional factors. The present study explored the role of gut microbiota in, and its association with, metabolic disorders during CUG-SGA. METHODS: An SGA rat model was established by restricting food intake during pregnancy, and the rats were divided into catch-up growth (CUG-SGA) and non-catch-up growth (NCUG-SGA) groups based on body weight

Chronically Elevated Levels of Short-Chain Fatty Acids Induce T Cell-Mediated Ureteritis and Hydronephrosis.

Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are major products of gut microbial fermentation and profoundly affect host health and disease. SCFAs generate IL-10(+) regulatory T cells, which may promote immune tolerance. However, SCFAs can also induce Th1 and Th17 cells upon immunological challenges and, therefore, also have the potential to induce inflammatory responses. Because of the seemingly paradoxical SCFA activities in regulating T cells, we investigated, in depth, the impact of elevated SCFA levels on T cells and tissue inflammation in mice. Orally administered SCFAs induced effector (Th1 and Th17

The effect of fuel alcohol on monoaromatic hydrocarbon biodegradation and natural attenuation.

The proposed replacement of the gasoline oxygenate MTBE with ethanol represents potential economic and environmental quality benefits. However, these benefits may be offset to some extent by potential detrimental effects on groundwater quality and natural attenuation of released petroleum products. The objectives of this literature review are to bound the extent to which these impacts may occur, summarize the available information on the biodegradation of ethanol in the environment, assess the potential effect that biodegradation processes may have on the fate and transport of BTEX compounds,

Effects of the soluble fibre pectin on intestinal cell proliferation, fecal short chain fatty acid production and microbial population.

AIM: Although pectin, a dietary fibre, has been suggested to possess some trophic effects on the intestine, the mechanisms involved remain unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of pectin on rat intestinal cell proliferation and the intraluminal environment. METHODS: Control and pectin-fed rats were given a fibre-free elemental diet (ED) and an ED containing 2.5% pectin, respectively. On the 15th day, the length, weight and number of Ki-67-positive cells from each intestinal segment, and the short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and microbial population in the caecum were measured. Daily alternation of the dietary starch level in Holstein dairy cows.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of controlled daily alternations in dietary starch level on changes in rumen environment, blood, urine, and milk metabolites of dairy cows. Six multiparous mid-lactation Holstein cows were used in a replicated 3 × 3 Latin square design with 14-d periods and 3 alternating levels of dietary starch as treatments. Each 14-d period consisted of a 7-d baseline period and 7-d alternating period where diets alternated day to day. During the baseline period, all cows were fed a control diet containing 21% starch (dry matter basis). During the alternat

Gut microbiota modified by Mulberry leaf water extract improves T2DM through browning of WAT/BAT activation mediated by SCFAs-AMPK/SIRT1/PGC-1α signaling pathway.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Mulberry leaf (Morus alba L.), traditionally recorded in "Compendium of Materia Medica" for diabetes treatment. Mulberry leaf water extract (MLE) has also been shown in modern studies to improve blood glucose levels while restoring gut microbiota homeostasis and increasing short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) levels. However, the causal relationship between MLE-promoted SCFAs elevation and improvements in glucose/lipid metabolism as well as the exact mechanism, remain unclear. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aimed to clarify the causal relationship between MLE-promoted

Daily oral administration of probiotics engineered to constantly secrete short-chain fatty acids effectively prevents myocardial injury from subsequent ischaemic heart disease.

AIMS: Given the extremely limited regeneration potential of the heart, one of the most effective strategies to reduce the prevalence and mortality of coronary artery disease is prevention. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which are by-products of beneficial probiotics, have been reported to possess cardioprotective effects. Despite their beneficial roles, delivering SCFAs and maintaining their effective concentration in plasma present major challenges. Therefore, in the present study, we aimed to devise a strategy to prevent coronary heart disease effectively by using engineered probiotics to

A Diet-Sensitive Commensal Lactobacillus Strain Mediates TLR7-Dependent Systemic Autoimmunity.

Western lifestyle is linked to autoimmune and metabolic diseases, driven by changes in diet and gut microbiota composition. Using Toll-like receptor 7 (TLR7)-dependent mouse models of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), we dissect dietary effects on the gut microbiota and find that Lactobacillus reuteri can drive autoimmunity but is ameliorated by dietary resistant starch (RS). Culture of internal organs and 16S rDNA sequencing revealed TLR7-dependent translocation of L. reuteri in mice and fecal enrichment of Lactobacillus in a subset of SLE patients. L. reuteri colonization worsened autoimmu

Butyrate from pectin fermentation inhibits intestinal cholesterol absorption and attenuates atherosclerosis in apolipoprotein E-deficient mice.

Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), the major products of dietary fiber fermentation by intestinal microflora, exert beneficial effects on pathogenesis of multiple metabolic diseases. The aim of this study was to determine whether SCFAs from fermentation of pectin (PE), a soluble dietary fiber, prevent the development of atherosclerosis in apolipoprotein E-deficient (apoE-/-) mice. Male apoE-/- mice (8-week-old) were fed a high-fat, high-cholesterol diet (HCD; 21% wt/wt fat, 0.15% wt/wt cholesterol) or HCD supplemented with 20% wt/wt PE (HCD+PE) alone or with antibiotics (HCD+PE + A) in drinking
