MRI evidence of high signal intensity and temporomandibular arthralgia and relating pain. Does the high signal correlate to the pain?

In order to investigate the relationship between various temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain levels and the detection of high signal intensity (joint effusion) on T2 weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), 19 consecutive patients who complained of unilateral painful TMJ hypomobility (closed locking) were involved in this study. All patients were clinically examined in a routine manner, and all patients rated their pain levels by a visual analogue scale and eight pain questionnaire prior MRI study. T1 and T2 weighted MRI was taken in sagittal section at unilateral affected joint side. The pre

Mouse incising central pattern generator: Characteristics and modulation by pain.

INTRODUCTION: Vertebrate incising and chewing are controlled by a set of neurons comprising the central pattern generator (CPG) for mastication. Mandibular positioning and force generation to perform these tasks is complex and requires coordination of multiple jaw opening and closing muscle compartments located in muscles on both sides of the jaw. The purpose of this study was to determine the characteristics of the CPG by recording mouse incising forces in the home cage environment to evaluate changes in force characteristics with incising frequency and force direction. A second purpose was t

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors of the trigeminal nerve: a systematic review of 36 cases.

OBJECT: Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) are a rare form of malignancy arising from the Schwann cells of peripheral nerves. MPNSTs of the trigeminal nerve are exceptionally rare, with only a handful of reports in the literature. These tumors are typically very aggressive, resulting in significant patient morbidity and a generally grim prognosis. Most current reports suggest that radical resection with radiation therapy offers the best benefit. In this study, the authors systematically reviewed the world English-language literature on MPNSTs of the trigeminal nerve to analyze t

[Chewing gum and dental health. Literature review].

Clinical studies have demonstrated the caries promoting effects of sugar based gum when compared with non sugar chewing controls. Sucrose gum has been shown to stimulate plaque growth and increase its adhesivity. Acid produced in plaque and mixed saliva whilst chewing sugar gum is counteracted by the buffering action of mastication induced saliva. However the vast majority of studies measuring plaque pH has demonstrated acidification of plaque during use of sugar gum into the decalcifying zone (pH < or = 5.5), or after the gum is taken out. Sugar gum causes a more pronounced fall in plaque pH

Comparison of Upper Body Joint and Hand Motions in Eating Solid Foods With Chopsticks and Semisolid Foods With a Spoon in Healthy Males and Females: Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Foods are not only masticated and swallowed but they also influence the choice of utensils and their use. Comparing the contexts in which different utensils are used with each food form could help in the assessment of individuals experiencing eating difficulties in the food culture unique to East Asian countries. OBJECTIVE: Considering East Asian rehabilitation practices, in this study, we evaluated upper body movements involved in eating pickles (solid food) and yogurt (semisolid food) using chopsticks and a spoon, respectively. METHODS: Upper body kinematics, including joint an

Indications and outcomes of endoscopic transorbital surgery for trigeminal schwannoma based on tumor classification: a multicenter study with 50 cases.

OBJECTIVE: Trigeminal schwannoma is a rare CNS tumor and involves the multicompartmental skull base. Recently, the endoscopic transorbital approach (ETOA) has emerged as a technique for minimally invasive surgery. The objective of this study was to evaluate the optimal indications and clinical outcomes of the ETOA for trigeminal schwannomas based on their tumor classification. METHODS: Between September 2016 and February 2022, the ETOA was performed in 50 patients with trigeminal schwannoma at four tertiary hospitals. There were 15 men and 35 women in the study, with a mean age of 46.9 years.

Effect of fatigue loading and failure mode of different ceramic implant abutments.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Currently many options are available for restoring a dental implant, although the ideal implant abutment for withstanding the occlusal load and the restorative material for fulfilling the esthetic need remains unclear. Zirconia (Zir) abutments offer good esthetics, but concerns still remain regarding their fracture strength, complex fabrication, and higher cost as compared with those of titanium (Ti) base abutments offering lower cost, acceptable esthetics, and a straightforward procedure. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the fracture strength

Invited review: Current perspectives on eating and rumination activity in dairy cows.

Many early studies laid the foundation for our understanding of the mechanics of chewing, the physiological role of chewing for the cow, and how chewing behavior is affected by dietary characteristics. However, the dairy cow has changed significantly over the past decades, as have the types of diets fed and the production systems used. The plethora of literature published in recent years provides new insights on eating and ruminating activity of dairy cows. Lactating dairy cows spend about 4.5 h/d eating (range: 2.4-8.5 h/d) and 7 h/d ruminating (range: 2.5-10.5 h/d), with a maximum total chew

Relative contribution of ruminal buffering systems to pH regulation in feedlot cattle fed either low- or high-forage diets.

The relative contribution of ruminal short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) absorption and salivary buffering to pH regulation could potentially change under different dietary conditions. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the effects of altering the ruminal supply of rapidly fermentable carbohydrate (CHO) on absorptive function and salivation in beef cattle. Eight heifers (mean BW±SD=410±14 kg) were randomly allocated to two treatments in a crossover design with 37-day periods. Dietary treatments were barley silage at 30% low forage (LF) or 70% high forage (HF) of dietary dry ma

Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma of the head and neck: clinical, pathologic, and imaging evaluation.

Lymphomas are subdivided into HL and NHL and are more specifically classified into subtypes of HL or NHL according to the WHO classification. HLs involve the lymph nodes predominantly and only approximately 5% arise in extranodal sites, whereas 30% of NHLs present in extranodal sites. Imaging studies, including CT and MR imaging, cannot distinguish [figure: see text] HL from NHL, and cannot differentiate their various subtypes, necessitating a pathologic diagnosis. Clinical parameters, however, can be helpful in differentiating the two broad categories of lymphomas, and subtypes of lymphomas h

[Schwannoma located in the tongue. A clinical case report].

Schwannoma or neurilemmoma and neurofibroma are two tumors of the peripheral nerves originating in the nerve sheaths. Schwannoma account for just over 1% of benign tumors reported in the oral cavity. The tongue is unanimously considered the most frequent site at this level; however, the tip is the least affected part of the organ. The case of schwannoma reported here is the third observed with a lingual localization in 18 years by the Division of Maxillo-Facial Surgery of The Odontostomatological Clinic of the University of Turin. The case is of interest due the rarity of this pathology and th
