Total knee arthroplasty following prior distal femoral fracture.

BACKGROUND: Femoral fracture may predispose the knee to the development of post-traumatic arthritis by either a direct intra-articular injury or residual limb malalignment. Malunion, intra-articular osseous defects, limb malalignment, retained internal fixation devices, and compromised surrounding soft tissues may in turn affect the outcome of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in these patients. The aim of our study was to evaluate the result of TKA in patients with previous distal femoral fracture. METHODS: The results of 48 cemented condylar total knee arthroplasties, performed between 1980 to

Short- to mid-term clinical outcomes and return to sport and work after arthroscopic debridement of the extensor carpi radialis brevis in patients with chronic lateral epicondylopathy.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the short- to mid-term clinical outcomes following arthroscopic extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB) debridement in patients with chronic epicondylopathy humeri radialis (cEHR). We hypothesized that arthroscopic ECRB debridement would result in favorable short- to mid-term patient-reported outcomes, improving pain levels, strength, range of motion (ROM) and patient satisfaction. METHODS: A retrospective case series was conducted on patients who underwent arthroscopic ECRB debridement for cEHR with symptoms > 6 months. Patients were assessed at a minim

What Is the Anatomic Footprint of the Anterolateral Ligament of the Knee? A Race- and Sex-based MRI Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The anatomic location of the anterolateral ligament (ALL) of the knee is critical to ALL reconstruction, but there is not a clear consensus about the location of its footprint. Knowledge of the anatomic footprint is necessary to assess intraoperative positioning and postoperative functional outcomes of ALL reconstruction. Furthermore, while racial and sex-related variations in the ACL have been well documented, it remains unknown whether such differences extend to the ALL, as well as whether these differences influence surgical strategies. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We generated three-di

Infarcts and ischemia in the abdomen: an imaging perspective with an emphasis on cross-sectional imaging findings.

Infarcts and ischemia of abdominal organs may present with acute abdominal pain, and early diagnosis is crucial to prevent morbidity and mortality. Unfortunately, some of these patients present in poor clinical conditions to the emergency department, and imaging specialists are crucial for optimal outcomes. Although the radiological diagnosis of abdominal infarcts is often straightforward, it is vital to use the appropriate imaging modalities and correct imaging techniques for their detection. Additionally, some non-infarct-related abdominal pathologies may mimic infarcts, cause diagnostic con

Effect of long-toss throwing on elbow injuries in high school baseball pitchers.

BACKGROUND: Long-toss throwing is a common practice in baseball for arm strengthening, arm recovery, and as part of an interval throwing program after elbow surgery. However, the effect of long-toss throwing on the throwing elbow remains controversial, with limited studies. Different long-toss techniques, such as using a crow-hop and varying the throw trajectory, may influence elbow stress and injury risk. This study investigated the association between long-toss distance, technique, and subjective elbow symptoms and clinical findings among high school baseball pitchers. OBJECTIVE: The object

Laparoscopic Extended Segmentectomy VIII Guided by Three-Dimensional Reconstruction and Hepatic Veins with a Cranio-Caudal Approach.

INTRODUCTION: Minimally invasive resection of segment VIII is a technically challenging procedure, made even more challenging when the resection is extended to segment IV and/or segment VII. Parenchymal-sparing resections are frequently used in the management of liver metastases but expose to the risk of R1 resection, especially with a minimally invasive approach. Preoperative surgical planning with 3D reconstruction and intraoperative guidance with hepatic vein is helpful for laparoscopic oncological liver resection.1-3 PATIENT AND METHODS: We present the case of a 58-year-old female with thr

Elbow hemiarthroplasty with a 3D-printed prosthesis for distal humeral bone defects after tumor excision: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: The distal humerus is a rare site for primary and metastatic bone tumors. Due to the scarcity of cases and lack of standardized surgical strategies, it is often difficult for surgeons to choose the right choice. The application of a 3D-printed prosthesis with hemiarthroplasty for the treatment of the distal humerus after tumor resection can be a very effective option. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a clinical case of a 3D-printed distal humeral prosthesis for the treatment of bone defects caused by metastatic bone tumors. The preoperative evaluation was aggressively performed, an

Concomitant Medial Meniscal Root Repair with Extrusion Repair (Centralization Technique).

BACKGROUND: Meniscal extrusion is a phenomenon in which a degenerative posterior horn tear, radial tear, or root tear results in displacement of the body of the meniscus medial to the tibial rim. The paramount function of the meniscus is to provide load distribution across the knee joint. Meniscal extrusion will prevent the meniscus from properly fulfilling this function and eventually leads to progression of osteoarthritis1. Thus, root repair accompanied by arthroscopic meniscal extrusion repair (by a centralization technique) has been suggested for restoration of meniscal function2-5. There

MSC-EV therapy for bone/cartilage diseases.

Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) have been utilized in cell therapy for various diseases. Recent studies have demonstrated that extracellular vesicles (EVs) released by MSCs play an important role in their therapeutic activities. EVs contain a variety of bioactive molecules such as proteins, messenger RNAs (mRNAs), and micro RNAs (miRNAs) and modify the function of the recipient cells by transferring these molecules. Despite the promising potential of EV therapy as a substitute for MSC therapy, there are challenges that need to be addressed for the clinical success of EV therapy. EV quality ha

Effectiveness and safety of a less-invasive MCL reconstruction technique for contracted or ossified ligaments in patients with elbow stiffness: An open-label, non-randomised, prospective, multicentre trial in China.

BACKGROUND: The elbow joint is sensitive to trauma from accidents, sports injuries, and surgical trauma. Some patients develop ossification or contracture of the medial collateral ligament (MCL) after elbow trauma. A less invasive reconstruction of the MCL can be performed after resection of diseased MCL. The biomechanical characteristics of this technique have been demonstrated and validated. However, its clinical effectiveness and safety require further confirmation in clinical practice. METHODS: This open-label, non-randomised, prospective, multicentre trial included consecutive patients w

Insights into Endothelial Progenitor Cells: Origin, Classification, Potentials, and Prospects.

With the discovery of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) in the late 1990s, a paradigm shift in the concept of neoangiogenesis occurred. The identification of circulating EPCs in peripheral blood marked the beginning of a new era with enormous potential in the rapidly transforming regenerative field. Overwhelmed with the revelation, researchers across the globe focused on isolating, defining, and interpreting the role of EPCs in various physiological and pathological conditions. Consequently, controversies emerged regarding the isolation techniques and classification of EPCs. Nevertheless, th
