Illegal Wildlife Trade in Kathmandu Valley: A Hub of Biodiversity Crime.

The illegal wildlife trade (IWT) poses a major driver of global biodiversity loss and poses particular challenges in biodiversity-rich countries located along international trafficking routes. Nepal occupies a strategic position between two of the world's largest consumer markets for wildlife products, India and China, making Kathmandu Valley an important urban center for wildlife trafficking. Despite its strategic importance, long-term analyses of wildlife crime patterns in Kathmandu Valley remain limited. This study examines patterns and temporal trends in IWT and describes the demographic c

Layer-by-layer soft-tissue effects on flexion-extension-dominant passive ex vivo limb joint ROM in quadrupedal mammals: An anatomical contribution to a morphofunctional framework.

Functional reconstructions of extinct mammals often infer joint mobility from osteological geometry, yet the mobility envelope in life emerged from bones embedded within a layered soft-tissue system. More broadly, passive joint mobility provides an anatomical bridge between osteological form, soft-tissue constraints, and biological movement. Ex vivo range-of-motion (ROM) datasets that explicitly partition soft-tissue contributions across multiple joints and postural types remain scarce for mammals. Here, we quantify layer-by-layer effects on flexion-extension-dominant passive ex vivo limb join

Experimental Infection of Captive Red Foxes (Vulpes vulpes) with Mycobacterium bovis.

In Europe, animal tuberculosis (TB) due to Mycobacterium bovis involves multi-host communities that include cattle and wildlife species, such as wild boar (Sus scrofa), badgers (Meles meles) and red deer (Cervus elaphus). Red fox (Vulpes vulpes) infections have also been recently reported in some TB endemic regions in the Iberian Peninsula and France, with some of the infected animals shedding M. bovis in urine and feces. In order to understand the pathogenesis of M. bovis infection in foxes and the associated risk of transmission, 12 captive foxes (6 females and 6 males) were inoculated orall

Circulation of Babesia Species and Their Exposure to Humans through Ixodes Ricinus.

Human babesiosis in Europe has been attributed to infection with Babesia divergens and, to a lesser extent, with Babesia venatorum and Babesia microti, which are all transmitted to humans through a bite of Ixodes ricinus. These Babesia species circulate in the Netherlands, but autochthonous human babesiosis cases have not been reported so far. To gain more insight into the natural sources of these Babesia species, their presence in reservoir hosts and in I. ricinus was examined. Moreover, part of the ticks were tested for co-infections with other tick borne pathogens. In a cross-sectional stud

Presence of a cryptic Onchocerca species in black flies of northern California, USA.

BACKGROUND: Black flies (Diptera: Simuliidae) serve as arthropod vectors for various species of Onchocerca (Nematoda: Onchocercidae) that may be associated with disease in humans, domestic animals, and wildlife. The emergence of zoonotic Onchocerca lupi in North America and reports of cervid-associated zoonotic onchocerciasis by Onchocerca jakutensis highlight the need for increased entomological surveillance. In addition, there is mounting evidence that Onchocerca diversity in North America is far greater than previously thought, currently regarded as Onchocerca cervipedis species complex. Th

Recent advances in contraceptive vaccine development: a mini-review.

Contraceptive vaccines (CV) may provide viable and valuable alternatives to the presently available methods of contraception. The molecules that are being explored for CV development either target gamete production [luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH)/GnRH, FSH], gamete function [sperm antigens and oocyte zona pellucida (ZP)], and gamete outcome (HCG). CV targeting gamete production have shown varied degrees of efficacy; however, they either affect sex steroids causing impotency and/or show only a partial rather than a complete effect in inhibiting gametogenesis. However, vaccines bas

Sugar-sweetened beverage intake in relation to semen quality and reproductive hormone levels in young men.

STUDY QUESTION: Is consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) associated with semen quality? SUMMARY ANSWER: Higher consumption of SSB was associated with lower sperm motility among healthy, young men. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: The existing literature on the potential role of SSBs on male reproductive function is scarce and primarily focused on the relation between caffeinated beverages and semen quality. However, a rodent model suggests that SSBs may hamper male fertility. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION: The Rochester Young Men's Study; a cross-sectional study of 189 healthy young men carri

Dissecting Flavivirus Biology in Salivary Gland Cultures from Fed and Unfed Ixodes scapularis (Black-Legged Tick).

The Ixodes scapularis tick transmits a number of pathogens, including tick-borne flaviviruses (TBFVs). In the United States, confirmed human infections with the Powassan virus (POWV) TBFV have a fatality rate of ∼10% and are increasing in incidence. Tick salivary glands (SGs) serve as an organ barrier to TBFV transmission, and little is known regarding the location of TBFV infection in SGs from fed ticks. Previous studies showed I. scapularis vanin (VNN) involved with TBFV infection of I. scapularis ISE6 embryonic cells, suggesting a potential role for this gene. The overall goal of this study

Comparative speed of kill of sarolaner (Simparica) and afoxolaner (NexGard against induced infestations of Ixodes scapularis on dogs.

BACKGROUND: The black-legged (or deer) tick, Ixodes scapularis, commonly infests dogs and cats in North America and is the main vector for the pathogen that causes Lyme disease in dogs and humans. The speed of kill of a parasiticide is critical to minimize the direct and deleterious effects of tick infestation and especially to reduce the risk of tick-borne pathogen transmission. In this study, speed of kill of a novel orally administered isoxazoline parasiticide, sarolaner chewable tablets (Simparica), against I. scapularis on dogs was evaluated and compared with afoxolaner (NexGard) for five

Drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms syndrome probably induced by a lamotrigine-ginseng drug interaction.

The likelihood of a drug reaction with lamotrigine is increased by dose escalation that is too rapid or drug interactions that increase the concentration of lamotrigine. There is a well-documented interaction between valproic acid and lamotrigine in which lamotrigine levels are increased, subsequently increasing the risk of a drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) syndrome. This syndrome is characterized by fever, lymphadenopathy, diffuse maculopapular rash, multivisceral involvement, eosinophilia, and atypical lymphocytes and has a mortality rate of 10-40%. We describe

Age-related and regional differences in the prevalence of hepatitis E virus-specific antibodies in pigs in Germany.

An increasing number of acute autochthonous human hepatitis E virus (HEV)-infections was noticed in Germany and other developed countries, most likely the result of a zoonotic virus transmission from pig, wild boar and deer. Currently there is still a lack of profound data concerning the actual prevalence of HEV-specific antibodies in domestic pig herds in Germany, in particular for regions with high pig density, and its age-dependency. 2273 domestic pig sera were collected in 2011 mainly from Bavaria, North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony from areas having a high pig density. Initially, 420

Postmortem Abdominal Ultrasound in Healthy Wild Mammals for Application in Forensic Veterinary Medicine.

Diagnostic imaging methods have been used in human medicine to identify and examine cadavers to determine the cause of death. In veterinary medicine, the use of these resources is still scarce and little known, and it is necessary to establish the contribution that methods such as ultrasound could provide to the investigation of the cause of death in domestic and wild animals. Postmortem ultrasonography (PMUS) can help forensic science find injuries that even in conventional necropsy go unnoticed. Thus, knowing the sensitivity and accuracy of the method is important and, therefore, the present

Studies of compact hard tissues and collagen by means of Brillouin light scattering.

A measure of the elastic properties of tissue can be found from the propagation of sound in the tissue. Longitudinal sonic velocities were measured for mineralized turkey leg tendon (density 1.50 g/cc), deer antler (1.77 g/cc) and cow tibia (2.05 g/cc) in the 10 GHz frequency regime by means of Brillouin light scattering using a nine pass Fabry-Perot interferometer. Wet, air dried, mineralized and demineralized specimens were tested. Sonic velocity in each tissue increased with mineral content and decreased when the tissue was wet. All wet values are higher than for wet rat tail tendon collage

Risk analysis of ectoparasites acting as vectors for chronic wasting disease.

Prion diseases are rare neurodegenerative diseases of humans and animals with a lethal evolution. Animal prion infections, such as chronic wasting disease (CWD) and scrapie (sheep) have shown a pattern of horizontal transmission. CWD is an endemic disease that has been affecting thousands of domestic and wild cervids in US for the last three decades. The mode of contamination is not known, although direct contact between infected and non-infected animals via saliva, urine and feces have been considered. Increasing spread of CWD has raised concerns about the potential transmission to humans and

EFFECT OF COLLA CORNUS CERVI COMBINED WITH LV-MEDIATED BMP7 TRANSFECTED BMSCs ON ANFH IN RATS.

In the present study, we investigated the combined effect of Colla Comus Cervi (CCC) and BMP7-overexpressing bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) on osteogenic induction and the treatment of avascular necrosis of the femoral head (ANFH). BMSCs were isolated from rats. BMP7-overexpressing BMSCs were generated by lentiviral-mediated gene transduction. Cell proliferation, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, osteogenesis related gene expression, osteocalcin levels, and calcified nodules were quantified and compared between four groups: untreated controls, BMSCs cultured with CCC com

Observations on the use of GonaCon in captive female elk (Cervus elaphus).

Overabundant populations of elk (Cervus elaphus) are a significant concern in some areas of the western United States because of potential ecologic damage and spread of brucellosis to domestic livestock. Brucella abortus is transmitted among elk through direct contact with aborted fetuses, placentas and associated fluids, or postpartum discharge of infected animals. Because transmission of brucellosis is dependent on pregnancy, contraception of cows could be used for both disease and population management. The objective of this study was to evaluate the contraceptive efficacy of a gonadotropin

Antler stem cells as a novel stem cell source for reducing liver fibrosis.

Liver fibrosis results from collagen fiber deposition. Antler stem cells (ASCs) naturally in vivo differentiate into cartilage, which is only made of Col II in collagen component; whereas liver fibrosis is caused by over-abundance of Col I and III. In addition, ASCs can effectively promote regenerative wound healing in which tissue contains very few collagen fibers (Col I). In this study, we investigate the therapeutic effects of ASCs in a rat model of CCl4-induced liver fibrosis. Rats were treated with ASCs for 4 weeks in vivo, then biochemical and histopathological analyses were performed. F

Seasonal dynamics, Leishmania diversity, and nanopore-based metabarcoding of blood meal origins in Culicoides spp. in the newly emerging focus of leishmaniasis in Northern Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Clinical cases of leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania (Mundinia) parasites have been increasingly reported in Southeast Asia, particularly Thailand. Recent evidence has shown that Leishmania (Mundinia) parasites successfully developed into infective metacyclic promastigotes in Culicoides biting midges, strongly supporting their putative role in disease transmission. However, Culicoides diversity, host preference, and Leishmania prevalence in endemic areas remain largely unknown. METHODS: We investigated the seasonal dynamics, infection prevalence, and blood meal identification of C

Method for detection and enumeration of Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts in feces, manures, and soils.

Eight concentration and purification methods were evaluated to determine percentages of recovery of Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts from calf feces. The NaCl flotation method generally resulted in the highest percentages of recovery. Based on the percentages of recovery, the amounts of fecal debris in the final oocyst preparations, the relatively short processing time (<3 h), and the low expense, the NaCl flotation method was chosen for further evaluation. Extraction efficiency was evaluated by using oocyst concentrations of 25, 50, 10(2), 10(3), 10(4), and 10(5) oocysts g of bovine feces-1. Th
