Tolerance induced by non-opioid analgesic microinjections into rat's periaqueductal gray and nucleus raphe.

Several lines of investigations have shown that the microinjection of non-opioid analgesics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in the midbrain periaqueductal gray matter (PAG) induces antinociception with some effects of tolerance. Our recent findings also have shown the same effects of tolerance in intraperitoneal (i.p.) injections of analgin (metamizol), ketorolac, and xefocam. Moreover, just recently, we have shown that microinjection of three NSAIDs analgin, ketorolac and xefocam into the central nucleus of amygdala produces tolerance to these drugs and cross-tolerance to morp

Dietary intake of nickel and zinc by young children--results from food duplicate portion measurements in comparison to data calculated from dietary records and available data on levels in food groups.

The daily dietary intake of nickel (Ni) and zinc (Zn) by 42 young children, 21 boys and 21 girls, from 4 to 7 years of age, living in urban and rural areas of Germany and having different food consumption behaviour, was determined by the duplicate method with a 7-day sampling period. Dietary records were also kept by the children's parents for the 7-day sampling period. Individual reported food items were identified, assigned to food groups and, together with known Ni and Zn concentrations of foodstuffs, daily intake rates were calculated. The same method was used for calculations of the energ

[Should monobloc cemented stems be systematically revised during revision total hip arthroplasty? A prospective evaluation].

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: The main reason for revision of Charnley type total hip arthroplasty is socket loosening related to high polyethylene wear and periacetabular osteolysis. In these situations, the monobloc cemented stem is frequently not loosened and it is not clear whether the femoral component can be retained during the revision procedure. The aim of this study was to evaluate surface and sphericity damage to the femoral head of a prospective and consecutive series of revision total hip arthroplasties during which the cemented monobloc femoral component has been systematically revised.

Preclinical testing of a wedge-rod system for fusionless correction of scoliosis.

STUDY DESIGN: Biomechanical study. OBJECTIVES: This paper describes the biomechanical comparison of calf spines instrumented with a wedge alone versus a wedge-rod construct for the fusionless correction of scoliosis. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Current techniques for the correction of scoliosis require either anterior or posterior spinal fusion for correction. We propose a technique allowing correction via vertebral body osteotomies along with fixation using a wedge-rod construct without the requirement of intervertebral segment fusion. METHODS: Calf spines were used to test the biomechanic

Initial arch wires used in orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances.

BACKGROUND: Initial arch wires are the first arch wires inserted into fixed appliance at the beginning of orthodontic treatment. With a number of different types of orthodontic arch wires available for initial tooth alignment, it is important to understand which are most efficient and which cause the least amount of root resorption and pain during the initial aligning stage of treatment. This is the third update of a Cochrane review first published in 2010. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of initial arch wires for the alignment of teeth with fixed orthodontic braces, in terms of the rate of

First report of post harvest blue mold disease in 'Cuimi' kumquat fruit caused by Penicillium italicum in China.

The 'Cuimi' kumquat (Citrus japonica), a geographical indication product in Rong'an County, China, is highly susceptible to post-harvest pathogenic infections, leading to soft decay. In spring 2024, fruits demonstrated symptoms of soft decay, displaying white mycelium and blue conidia on surfaces, with lesions later transitioning to a blue hue. The soft decay incidence averaged approximately 18.3%, based on assessments involving ten trees per orchard and fifty fruits per tree, across four orchards in Rongan County. To isolate the pathogen, six partially rotted fruits from each orchard, represe

[Lumbar and lumbo-sacral fusion using Twinflex devices in 114 cases with minimal follow-up of 1 year].

UNLABELLED: The author presents a series of 114 cases of lumbo-sacral fusion with a minimum follow-up of 1 year and a mean of 21.7 months.Since the use of the first transpedicular screws (1963 R. Roy-Camille) spinal instrumentation has considerably eased post-operative care in lumbo-sacral fusion as well as fusion rate. Recently, instrumentation has became more and more rigid. But rigidity has it's limits. Pain as well as poor bone grafting frequently occurs eventhough surgery was performed correctly. This is why the author has developed a concept of flexible transpedicular instrumentation. Th

[Fluorine-functionalized zirconium-based metal-organic framework immobilized thin film microextraction array for high-throughput analysis of glyphosate residues].

The development of high-throughput sample pretreatment methods is essential for the rapid screening and accurate analysis of contaminants in food and environmental matrices. In this study, we established a novel high-throughput sample pretreatment approach for glyphosate using a 96-blade thin-film microextraction (TFME) device. The blade surface was coated with a functionalized metal-organic framework (MOF) as the extractive phase. Specifically, a fluorinated zirconium-based MOF (UiO-66-F4) was synthesized via a hydrothermal method. Various characterization techniques, including scanning elect

[Analysis of phthalate esters from vegetable oils by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry coupled with headspace solid-phase microextraction using cyclodextrin-based hypercrosslinked polymer coated fiber].

Phthalate esters (PAEs) are used as additives to enhance the pliability and malleability of plastics. These substances frequently migrate from packaging materials to vegetable oils because of the absence of covalent bonds. Over time, this migration could result in the accumulation of PAEs in the human body through ingestion, contributing to various diseases. Therefore, accurate qualitative and quantitative analyses of PAEs in vegetable oils are imperative to assess the origins of contamination and investigate their toxicity, degradation, migration, and transformation patterns. However, the con

Wound healing: captopril, an angiogenesis inhibitor, and Staphylococcus aureus peptidoglycan.

BACKGROUND: Captopril, an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor, used for treating hypertension and heart failure, inhibits angiogenesis in the corneas of rats in response to basic fibroblast growth factor, slows the growth of experimental tumors in rats, and leads to the regression of Kaposi's sarcoma. Because angiogenesis is key to wound healing, we hypothesized that captopril would impair wound healing. We hypothesized also that because local application at operation of Staphylococcus aureus peptidoglycan (SaPG) increases angiogenesis and accelerates wound healing in rats, SaPG would prev

Positive security screening episodes of patients with spinal implants are influenced by detector type and not implant material.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Previous research on rates of spinal detection showed a low frequency of patients (5%) experienced delays and additional screening going through airport security. With continuous technology advances in screenings and the rise in cobalt chrome implantation, updated data on patient experiences was needed. PURPOSE: 1) Assess the rates of detection and additional screening by traditional metal detectors and full body scanners in patients with metal spinal implants, 2) Compare the rates of detection of various metal types (Titanium and cobalt-chrome, titanium only, and stainles

The functions and mechanisms of prefoldin complex and prefoldin-subunits.

UNLABELLED: The TAXUSExpress stent contains paclitaxel 1 microg/mm(2). On deployment, paclitaxel is slowly released into the intimal tissue of the coronary artery to prevent cell proliferation and neointimal hyperplasia. When deployed in patients with previously untreated coronary artery lesions, the paclitaxel-eluting stent (PES) effectively reduces the need for revascularization without increasing the risk of in-stent thrombosis. While long-term outcomes data and comparative efficacy and cost-benefit trials versus other drug-eluting stents are required, the PES appears to be an attractive al

Field study of TCE diffusion profiles below DNAPL to assess aquitard integrity.

An area where a free-product accumulation of trichloroethylene (TCE) dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) occurs at the bottom of a 10-m-thick surficial sand aquifer was studied to determine the integrity of the underlying, 20-m-thick, clayey silt aquitard formed of glaciolacustrine sediment. TCE concentration-versus-depth profiles determined from aquitard cores collected at five locations indicated penetration of detectable TCE 2.5 to 3.0 m into the aquitard. Two of the profiles show persistent DNAPL at the aquitard interface, while two others indicate that DNAPL, present initially, was com
