[Analysis of death causes of 345 cases with HIV/AIDS in Guangdong area].

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the death causes of 345 cases with HIV/AIDS in Guangdong area. METHODS: The situations of 345 hospitalized death cases with HIV/AIDS were conducted by retrospective analysis. RESULTS: (1)There were total 3406 hospitalized cases with HIV/AIDS in a hospital from January 2001 to December 2011 and 345 cases died, the fatality rate was 10. 13%. Since 2005 the introduction of free anti-viral treatment, the fatality rate of HIV/AIDS declined. The fatality rate of the patients whose CD4+ T lymphocyte counts <200 cells/microl was 14.61% (299/2046) and it was significantly higher

[Magnetic resonance imaging findings of the brain in adult HIV and AIDS patients].

The spectrum of pathology affecting the central nervous system (CNS) in patients suffering from acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) includes not only the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection itself but also opportunistic infections and tumors secondary to AIDS. Despite progress in antiretroviral therapy and the subsequent decrease in the incidence of associated diseases, opportunistic infections and tumors secondary to the HIV infection continue to be the limiting factor in terms of survival with AIDS. Therefore, the therapeutic aim is permanent antiretroviral therapy as well as

The use of plasmapheresis, lymphocytapheresis, and staph protein-A immunoadsorption as an immunomodulatory therapy in patients with AIDS and AIDS-related conditions.

Circulating immune complexes, autoantibodies, and suppressor factors to normal lymphoproliferation may play an important role in the induction and maintenance of the cellular immunodeficiency characteristic for the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and its related conditions. In order to explore the possibility that the removal of circulating humoral factors may have an immunomodulatory effect in patients with AIDS and AIDS-related conditions (ARC), we used apheresis procedures to treat patients with different clinical presentations of AIDS and ARC. Five patients with AIDS and opportun

Use of traditional medicines in the management of HIV/AIDS opportunistic infections in Tanzania: a case in the Bukoba rural district.

BACKGROUND: Ethnobotanical surveys were carried out to document herbal remedies used in the management of HIV/AIDS opportunistic infections in Bukoba Rural district, Tanzania. The district is currently an epicenter of HIV/AIDS and although over 90% of the population in the district relies on traditional medicines to manage the disease, this knowledge is impressionistic and not well documented. The HIV/AIDS opportunistic conditions considered during the study were Tuberculosis (TB), Herpes zoster (Shingles), Herpes simplex (Genital herpes), Oral candidiasis and Cryptococcal meningitis. Other sy

Opportunistic infections and acquired cellular immune deficiency among Haitian immigrants in Montreal.

Eight Haitian immigrants (five with acquired immune deficiency syndrome [AIDS] and three with the signs and symptoms of AIDS but without opportunistic infections or malignant diseases) are described. All had malaise, weight loss, fever and generalized lymphadenopathy. All five of those with opportunistic infections died from the infections, which were multiple in four cases. Septic shock due to Escherichia coli or Klebsiella pneumoniae developed in two patients. Evidence of immune deficiency in the AIDS patients included anergy, lymphocytopenia (in all but two), polyclonal hypergamma-globuline

67Ga-scintigraphy for evaluation of AIDS-related intestinal infections.

This study was designed to evaluate the role of 67Ga-scintigraphy in AIDS-related intestinal infections. Seventeen out of twenty-five HIV-positive patients (68%) primarily investigated with 67Ga-scans to screen for opportunistic pneumonia presented pathologic abdominal 67Ga-uptake which was, in most cases, due to proven opportunistic intestinal infection (cytomegalovirus, atypical mycobacteria, cryptosporidiosis etc.). The correlation of abdominal with pulmonary findings has shown that AIDS-related intestinal infections and opportunistic pneumonia may occur concomitantly in the majority cases

[Preventing opportunistic infections in patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus].

Highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), which has been provided since 1995 to patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), has produced noticeable results in regard to preventing opportunistic infections in this population. Nevertheless, it is still useful to administer specific prophylactic treatment against opportunistic infections in patients treated with HAART and also in patients who do not respond to HAART or who cannot or do not wish to take that treatment. Prophylactic treatment can be halted when, due to HAART, there is a sustained increase in the CD4+ T-lymphocyte

Care of Patients With HIV Infection: Medical Complications and Comorbidities.

Care of patients with HIV infection starts with diagnosis as soon as possible, preferably at or near the time of acute infection. Opportunistic infections, malignancies, and other conditions develop progressively over time, particularly in untreated patients. The AIDS-defining opportunistic infections most common in the United States include Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia, Candida esophagitis, toxoplasmic encephalitis, tuberculosis, disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex, cryptococcal meningitis, and cytomegalovirus retinitis. Specific prophylaxis regimens exist for several opportunistic i

AIDS in Haitian immigrants and in a Caucasian woman closely associated with Haitians.

In Montreal the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) was seen in eight Haitian immigrants and one Caucasian woman who had lived with Haitian immigrants for 3 years before the onset of her illness. AIDS was characterized by opportunistic infections alone in seven patients, by opportunistic infection and Kaposi's sarcoma in one patient and by chronic generalized lymphadenopathy in one patient. Five of the patients had presented with Mycobacterium tuberculosis infections 1 to 12 months before the onset of opportunistic infections. All nine patients were found to have recall anergy by skin t

Neoplasms in the acquired immune deficiency syndrome: the multidisciplinary approach to treatment.

Associated with the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a wide spectrum of opportunistic infections and secondary cancers. Foremost among the cancers is an aggressive form of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) that was rarely seen in the United States before 1981. The pathogenesis of this AIDS-related KS is obscure, and its prognosis is mainly related to the patient's immune status and history of opportunistic infections. Treatment modalities include local or regional radiotherapy, cytotoxic chemotherapy, and interferon therapy. Other cancers associated with AIDS include non-Hodgkin's lymphomas t

Bacterial infections in AIDS patients.

Bacterial infections cause a substantial burden of disease in the HIV-infected population. Like the opportunistic infections associated with AIDS, they are often usually severe. Unlike many AIDS-related opportunistic infections, however, many can be eradicated by therapy with the appropriate antibiotic, although some, like Salmonella sepsis, require prolonged suppressive therapy to prevent recurrences. Most importantly, the possibility of a bacterial infection should be kept in mind when evaluating any acutely ill HIV-infected patient, as therapy of bacterial disease is often curative while un

Visual Guide to Opportunistic Infections in People With HIV.

Modern antiretroviral therapy has led to a dramatic reduction in HIV-associated opportunistic infections and mortality, but late diagnosis of HIV and poor linkage to care persist and lead to a worse prognosis. HIV care is now focused on early therapy initiation and virologic control, and new practitioners may have less experience and fewer educational resources for diagnosis and management of opportunistic infections. In this special issue, we outline the clinical presentation, diagnosis, and management of opportunistic infections in the modern antiretroviral therapy era alongside clinical pho

[Extrapulmonary and disseminated pneumocystosis in AIDS. A review of the literature].

We present a literature review about extrapulmonary and disseminated pneumocystosis in AIDS. The prevalence of such infections seems low but is probably under-estimated. Disseminated pneumocystosis occurs in patients with profound immunosuppression, who do not receive prophylaxis against Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia or are treated with aerolized pentamidine. The lack of specificity of symptoms may delay the diagnosis. Most organs may be involved. Three different presentations may be individualized: disseminated pneumocystosis, intra-thoracic only disseminated pneumocystosis, in an intra-thor

Variations in inpatient mortality for AIDS in a national sample of hospitals.

In this project, we examined the spectrum of AIDS-related conditions and variations in associated inpatient mortality for AIDS patients treated in a national sample of hospitals. We identified 10,538 adult discharges with a diagnosis indicating AIDS from 258 hospitals from a national sample of 438 acute-care hospitals with 6 million discharges in 1986-1987. Opportunistic and other infections occurred in 55.9 and 37.9%, respectively, of AIDS discharges, and inpatient fatality rates varied considerably depending on complication type(s) and comorbidities. Clinical conditions were more important p

Coccidioidomycosis: a review of recent advances.

Coccidioidomycosis is one of three dimorphic endemic mycoses recognized in North America. Over the past decade, the disease has been resurgent, particularly in the southwest United States. With this increase in incidence have come new observations and insights and re-examination of past issues. This article explores some of these areas by focusing principally on recent publications that are of importance.

Mycobacterial infections in AIDS: an overview of epidemiology, clinical manifestations, therapy and prophylaxis.

One of the most frequent complications of AIDS is Mycobacterial infections. The incidence of tuberculosis has dramatically increased in all countries as a result of the HIV epidemic. Lately, it has been found that the natural history of new Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection is accelerated by HIV disease. In a wide number of cases the emergence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis nosocomial outbreaks of drug-sensitive and drug-resistant strains has been reported in HIV infected patients. The inadequate efforts to provide complete therapy to this kind of patient has caused the emergence of multidru

Redefining AIDS: towards a modification of the current AIDS case definition.

AIDS is defined by the occurrence of an opportunistic infection or tumor considered indicative of advanced infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Even though recent modifications have improved the widely used AIDS case definition issued by the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the modified version has fallen short of generating a globally functional instrument for the surveillance of HIV-related infections. The clinical AIDS case definition should be as comprehensive as possible. In many countries, only the diagnosis of an AIDS-defining i
