High-speed train may collide with many obstacles, which can cause serious occupant injury. This study aims to investigate the dynamic characteristic of occupant during the frontal collision between high-speed train and obstacle. The finite element method was used to establish the collision model between the head vehicle of the train and obstacle. The frontal collision simulation tests under three collision conditions were established. The dynamic characteristics of occupants under different collision speeds and collision angles were explored. According to the above research, the influences of

Older people are or remain increasingly mobile for longer and participate in road traffic as car drivers or passengers, cyclists, and pedestrians. Regardless of their role in causing accidents, they are more likely to be seriously injured due to their higher vulnerability. If they are involved in an accident they suffer increasingly more from severe injuries, which consequently leads to longer hospitalization times. These aspects are even more applicable for persons aged 75 years or more than for persons aged 65-74 years. From a German in-depth accident study (GIDAS) analysis of the individual

OBJECTIVE: Mechanisms and patterns of severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) in infants and toddlers are different from adults and even from older children, but there is no taxonomy of injuries that can provide a basis for individualized care. The current project was undertaken as a proof of concept to demonstrate that a taxonomy can be constructed with clinical correlations.
METHODS: Data were taken from the American College of Surgeons Trauma Quality Improvement Program for the years 2014 through 2022. Inclusion criteria were an age < 2 years and Abbreviated Injury Scale head score of 4, 5, or

BACKGROUND: Thoracic injuries are common among trauma patients. Studies on trauma patients with thoracic injuries have reported considerable differences in morbidity and mortality, and there is limited research on comparison between trauma patients with and without thoracic injuries, particularly in the Scandinavian population. Thoracic injuries in trauma patients should be identified early and need special attention since the differences in injury patterns among patient population are important as they entail different treatment regimens and influence patient outcomes. The aim of the study wa

Motorcycle crashes increasingly become a high proportion of the overall motorized vehicle fatalities. However, limited research has been conducted to compare the injury severity of single-, two- and multi-vehicle crashes involving a motorcycle. This study aims to investigate the effects of rider characteristics, road conditions, pre-crash situations, and crash features on motorcycle severities with respect to different numbers of vehicles involved. The crash data used was obtained through a comprehensive Motorcycle Crash Causation Study (MCCS) by the Federal Highway Administration. An anatomic

Studies on the effectiveness of thoracic side airbags (tSABs) in preventing thoracic injuries is limited and conflicting. This retrospective observational study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of tSABs in side-impact crashes based on data for motor vehicle occupants (MVOs) who visited an emergency department in Korea. The data were obtained from the Korean In-Depth Accident Study (KIDAS) database for patients treated at Wonju Severance Christian Hospital between January 2011 and April 2020. Of the 3899 patients with road traffic injuries, data for 490 patients were used. The overall frequen

It is widely believed that with higher levels of vehicle automation and especially with the advent of fully automatic vehicles, the currently typical forward-facing, upright position will give way to a more relaxed and reclined seating posture. Therefore, the current study investigates the influence of a reclined sitting position on crash injury severity by analyzing real-world crash data from the German in-depth accident study (GIDAS). We compared reclined to upright occupants and focused on effect sizes regarding odds ratios at different injury severity levels. We used the abbreviated injury

INTRODUCTION: Under G +x accelerative loading, the Hybrid III anthropomorphic test device (ATD) is used to advance human safety. Although injury assessment risk curves (IARCs) are available at the level of the occipital condyles (commonly termed as upper neck), they do not exist for the cervical-thoracic junction (lower neck). The objectives of this study are to develop IARCs under G +x impact accelerations for the Hybrid III ATD and test device for human occupant restraint (THOR) ATD at the cervical thoracic junction.
METHODS: A series of Hybrid III ATD tests were conducted using input condi

Eleven Crash Injury Research and Engineering Network (CIREN) frontal crashes were reconstructed using a novel, time-efficient methodology involving a simplified vehicle model. Kinematic accuracy was assessed using novel kinematic scores between 0-1 and chest injury was assessed using literature-defined injury metric time histories. The average kinematic score across all simulations was 0.87, indicating good kinematic accuracy. Time histories for chest compression, rib strain, shoulder belt force, and steering column force discerned the most causative components of chest injury in all cases. Ab

OBJECTIVE: Almost 50% of traumatic brain-injured (TBI) patients are alcohol intoxicated. The Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) is frequently used to direct diagnostic and therapeutic decisions in these patients. It is commonly assumed that alcohol intoxication reduces GCS, thus limiting its utility in intoxicated patients. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that the presence of blood alcohol has a clinically significant impact on GCS in TBI patients.
METHODS: The National Trauma Data Bank of the American College of Surgeons was queried (1994-2003). Patients 18 to 45 years of age with

Contemporary research has pointed out that while newer cars are contributing to the decrease of AIS2+ and AIS3+ injuries in several body regions, this effect is not shown for thoracic injuries like rib or sternal fractures. The objective of this study is to assess the effectiveness of advanced seat belt systems incorporating pre-tensioners and load limiters in the prevention of fatal, AIS2+ and AIS3+ injuries overall and then focus only on the head-face-neck and thoracic areas. Data from the NASS CDS database between 2000 and 2015 was augmented with specific vehicle information taken from NHTS

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to generate functional forms of brain injury risk curves using the National Automotive Sample System Crashworthiness Data System's (NASS-CDS) database for the years of 2001-2015. The population of interest was near-side occupants who experienced a direct head impact with an injury source located lateral to a typical seated position.
METHODS: Brain injuries were restricted to Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) 2005 Update 2008 defined concussions and internal organ injuries of the head. Near-side occupants comprised two major groups, both of which were re

PURPOSE: The Berlin poly-trauma definition (BPD) has proven to be a valuable way of identifying patients with at least a 20% risk of mortality, by combining anatomical injury characteristics with the presence of physiological risk factors (PRFs). Severe isolated injuries (SII) are excluded from the BPD. This study describes the characteristics, resource use and outcomes of patients with SII according to their injured body region, and compares them with those included in the BPD.
METHODS: Data were extracted from the Dutch National Trauma Registry between 2015 and 2019. SII patients were defin

OBJECTIVE: Previous research has found elevated injury risk for females relative to males in passenger vehicle crashes but has not accounted for ways the crashes themselves differ between these populations. Vehicle curb weight, ride height, safety rating, airbag deployment, and crash configuration all influence injury outcome and often are not well-represented by delta-V alone. This study evaluated the effect of occupant sex on injury risk in front and side crashes while limiting or controlling for non-physiological crash differences. Additionally, the effects of crashworthiness improvements a

Traffic crashes are a common cause of injury and death, and often result from the negligent actions of an inattentive, speeding, or impaired driver. In such cases, a civil legal action may be brought by an injured claimant for compensation for injuries resulting from a crash. Crash-related litigation is defended on various theories, one of which is to raise the issue of contributory negligence when the claimant was not using an available seat belt at the time of the crash, based on the assertion that the claimed injuries would have been avoided or minimized to some degree if the claimant had b

OBJECTIVE: The first objective was to evaluate the effect of using less censored (i.e., exact and interval-censored) data on thoracic injury risk curves and the resulting injury probabilities. The second objective was to generate new injury risk curves to predict Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) 3+ rib fractures based on chest deflection.
METHODS: Two data sets consisting of postmortem human surrogate (PMHS) tests with multipoint chest deflection measurements were compiled: A less censored data set consisting of exact and interval-censored data and a doubly censored data set consisting of left-

Forensic engineers and crash safety researchers sometimes use the injuries of a seatbelted occupant to infer the injury risk of an unbelted occupant in the same crash, had they instead been wearing a seatbelt. It is unclear, however, whether this inference is valid or how often two occupants in the same collision have similar injuries. Here, we sought to compare the injury outcomes between drivers and front-seat passengers in frontal collisions using real-world collision data. We compared the injury severity, quantified using the Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS), of 22 injury categories between

OBJECTIVES: Several studies have shown that motorcycle antilock braking systems (ABS) reduce crashes and injuries. However, it has been suggested that the improved stability provided by ABS would make upright crashes more frequent, thus changing the injury distributions among motorcyclists and increasing the risk of leg injuries. The overall motorcycle design can vary across different categories and manufacturers. For instance, some motorcycles are equipped with boxer-twin engines; that is, with protruding cylinder heads. A previous study based on a limited material has suggested that these co
