Minute dissection was performed in one male adult cadaver in order to elucidate the detailed distribution of muscular branches of intercostal nerves within the lateral abdominal muscles as well as the segmental relationships. In the obliquus internus and transversus abdominis, as well as in the upper half of the obliquus externus, each muscle fascicle receives the nerve of the corresponding segmental attachment to the rib. On the other hand, in the lower half, the obliquus externus abdominis receives a twig from the lower adjacent segmental nerve, because within the muscle the corresponding se

The abdominal draw-in maneuver (ADIM) is designed to enhance neuromuscular function of the transversus abdominis (TrA) by distinguishing its activation from the internal oblique (IO) and external oblique (EO). However, a standardized implementation method has not yet been established, and previous studies have not quantitatively defined ADIM exercise intensity or examined regional muscle activation patterns. The lateral abdominal muscles have multiple anatomical attachment sites, suggesting region-specific functional differences. Therefore, identifying the optimal exercise intensity for ADIM r

Postherpetic pseudohernia causes an abdominal bulge as well as an abdominal wall herniation. This disease is one of the neurological complications of herpes zoster and essentially consists of paresis of ipsilateral abdominal muscles. Postherpetic pseudohernia may be mistaken for abdominal wall herniation because it is not well known. We describe two cases presenting an abdominal bulge. The ipsilateral abdominal bulge appeared after recovery from abdominal zoster. Abdominal CT showed no evidence of a herniation or mass. We diagnosed a postherpetic pseudohernia. One of the patients recovered spo

BACKGROUND: Surgery for Abdominal Rectus Diastasis (ARD) is a controversial topic and some argue that it is solely an aesthetic problem. Many symptoms in these patients are indefinite, and no objective criteria have been established, indicating which patients are likely to benefit from surgery. This study investigated the correlation between preoperative assessment and intraoperative measurement of ARD width, and objective measurements of muscle strength.
METHODS: 57 patients undergoing surgery for ARD underwent preoperative assessment of ARD width by clinical measurement and CT scan, and the

BackgroundRotator cuff (RC) disorders are common musculoskeletal conditions causing shoulder pain and functional loss. While abdominal muscles aid in core stabilization and force transmission, their strength, endurance, and thickness in RC disorders remain underexplored.ObjectivesThis study aimed to examine the differences in abdominal muscle performance between individuals with RC pathology and healthy controls and to evaluate the relationship of these parameters with pain, disability and quality of life.Materials and MethodThis cross-sectional study evaluated 128 individuals (RC group: 64; c

Abdominal wall hypoplasia is a widely known clinical finding of genetic disorders such as the prune belly syndrome. On the other hand, there are few cases of abdominal wall muscle hypoplasia associated with fetal ascites due to fetal hydrops caused by fetal anemia have been reported. We report a case of fetal chylous ascites without anemia, resulting in abdominal wall muscle hypoplasia and flabby skin. At 17 weeks of gestation, fetal ascites was first detected and deteriorated without anemia. At 28, 33 and 36 weeks of gestation, paracentesis was performed three times because of cardiovascular

The contribution of branched-axon monosynaptic inputs in the generation of short-term synchronization of motoneurones remains uncertain. Here, synchronization was measured for intercostal and abdominal motoneurones supplying the lower thorax and upper abdomen, mostly showing expiratory discharges. Synchronization in the anaesthetized cat, where the motoneurones receive a strong direct descending drive, is compared with that in anaesthetized or decerebrate rats, where the direct descending drive is much weaker. In the cat, some examples could be explained by branched-axon monosynaptic inputs, b

Epilepsia partialis continua (EPC) is a rare form of focal motor status epilepticus characterized by continuous muscular twitches or jerks involving a limited part of the body, usually facial region and distal limb. Although the cerebrovascular disease is known to be one of the most common causes of this condition, other reported cases with predominant abdominal involvement have different aetiologies, including, tumors, focal cortical dysplasia, and central nervous system infections. No cases of epilepsia partialis continua of the abdominal wall occurred after brain surgery have been previousl

INTRODUCTION: : Diastasis recti abdominis is consequence of mechanical forces that, proportionally to uterus and fetus augmentation, make pressure on anterior abdominal wall. Muscle tonus in pregnancy is significantly impaired. Stress relaxation of connective tissues and modified statics often cause back and leg pain.
AIM: To evaluate whether pregnancy augment the spinal column and abdominal muscles loading and to what extent, based on anthropometric measurements and software analysis.
METHODS: Twenty women participated in the study, having similar anthropometric measurements. Average height

The influence of respiratory activity of the abdominal muscles on their reaction time in a postural task was evaluated. The electromyographic (EMG) onsets of the abdominal muscles and deltoid were evaluated in response to shoulder flexion initiated by a visual stimulus occurring at random throughout the respiratory cycle. Increased activity of the abdominal muscles was produced by inspiratory loading, forced expiration below functional residual capacity, and a static glottis-closed expulsive maneuver. During quiet breathing, the latency between activation of the abdominal muscles and deltoid w

BACKGROUND: Hippotherapy is a therapeutic intervention that uses the horse as a biomechanical and sensorimotor agent to promote rehabilitation in individuals with physical and neurological disabilities. Depending on patient needs, riding may be performed with a single rider or with double riding, in which a therapist accompanies the practitioner on the horse. However, the effects of these riding configurations on equine trunk muscle activity remain poorly understood, despite their relevance for both horse welfare and the quality of therapeutic stimuli delivered to the patient.

PURPOSE: To describe and analyze the first case of multiple ectopic leiomyomas of the abdominal rectus muscles in a patient who had undergone gasless laparoscopic uterine myomectomy (GLM) 10 years before.
METHODS: A 41-year-old woman, who had undergone GLM 10 years before, having presented multiple palpable masses of the abdominal wall, underwent minilaparotomic excision of six abdominal masses.
RESULTS: Six round well-circumscribed masses of the abdominal rectus muscles, measuring, respectively, 3.8 × 1.7, 2.9 × 0.9, 0.8 × 0.5, 0.7 × 0.3, 10 × 0.8 and 0.5 × 0.4 cm, were excised. The major l

BACKGROUND: Respiratory muscles are considered to be more resistant to muscle relaxants as compared with peripheral muscles. However, the relative sensitivity of respiratory muscles participating to the pump function has not been compared. We used electromyography to compare pharmacodynamic parameters of the diaphragm and abdominal muscles after mivacurium.
METHODS: Forty adults undergoing elective surgery were randomly allocated in five dosing groups of mivacurium (50, 100, 150, 200, and 250 microg/kg). Patients anesthetized with propofol and fentanyl underwent intubation without relaxants.

Ultrasonography has recently been proposed for assessing changes in thickness and motion of the diaphragm during contraction in humans. Data on ultrasound assessment of abdominal muscles in humans are scarce. We therefore investigated the changes in thickness and the relevant mechanical effects of abdominal muscles using this technique during respiratory manoeuvres in normal subjects. We evaluated the thickness of the abdominal muscle layers in six normal male subjects (aged 26-36 yrs) using a 7.5 MHz B-mode ultrasound transducer. Gastric (Pg) and mouth pressures, muscle thickness of external

In order to determine the long-term sequelae of prune belly syndrome (PBS) and whether the absence of abdominal wall musculature impairs exercise performance we studied nine patients 6 to 31 yr of age with PBS. Conventional spirometry, lung volumes, DLCO, and respiratory muscle strength were measured. A progressive 1-min incremental exercise test was performed on a cycle ergometer, and relative abdominal and chest wall displacements were measured by respiratory inductive plethysmography (RIP). Mean values of TLC, FRC, and RV were 94 +/- 12, 88 +/- 13, and 94 +/- 41%, respectively. Mean values

Two unique cases of the syndrome of absent abdominal muscles with central nervous system involvement are presented. Microcephaly, polymicrogyria, and cerebellar heterotopiae were present in both. In case 1 there was also absence of the corpus callosum and agenesis of the cerebellar vermis. In case 2 a count of anterior horn cells in the spinal cord showed a reduction of approximately 50% in the lower thoracic region. The pertinent literature is briefly discussed. The findings in the nervous system suggest that the syndrome is the result of defective embryogenesis during the first trimester.

Electrical and mechanical studies have been made of the deep abdominal extensor muscles, medial (DEAM) and lateral (DEAL), of crayfish and lobster. The medial muscle responds to direct (intracellular) and indirect stimulation with a transient membrane depolarization which exhibits the properties of a propagated non-decremental action potential but does not overshoot the zero level. The amplitude is about 30 mv in crayfish and 50 mv in lobster. It is followed by a fast all-or-none twitch whose duration at 20 degrees C is 30 to 50 msec. and whose developed tension is 500 gm/cm(2) or about half t

BACKGROUND: Morphological changes in the abdominal wall muscle in diastasis recti abdominis (DRA) patients with low back pain (LBP) symptoms and whether there is a wider interrectus distance (IRD) remain unclear.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the correlation between DRA severity and LBP and the morphological differences in abdominal wall muscles between patients who presented with symptoms of LBP and those who were asymptomatic.
METHODS: A total of 57 postpartum DRA patients were enrolled, including 21 without LBP, 36 with LBP, and 30 healthy nulliparous women. The numeri
