Absorbent products for moderate-heavy urinary and/or faecal incontinence in women and men.

BACKGROUND: Incontinence is a common and embarrassing problem which has a profound effect on social and psychological well-being. Many people wear absorbent products to contain urine and/or faeces and protect their clothes and dignity. Users of absorbent pads are very diverse, including younger women, particularly those who have had children, older men with prostate disease, people with neurological conditions and older people with mobility and mental impairment. Whilst small absorbent pads for light incontinence are adequate for some users with low volumes of urine loss, for others with highe

Macropore absorbent with bihydrophilic layers for the recovery of low-sulfur fuel oil.

Conventional absorbent pads are widely employed for oil spill cleanup; however, their microporous structures face challenges in absorbing low-sulfur fuel oil (LSFO), especially at lower temperatures when LSFO solidifies owing to its high-viscosity shear stress. In this study, we developed a macroporous absorbent with bihydrophilic layers (MABL), i.e., a central hydrophobic layer sandwiched between two hydrophilic layers, with improved LSFO absorption efficiency. Unlike conventional hydrophobic absorbents, which remain predominantly afloat on the water surface with minimal submersion, the MABL

Factors Underlying Choice and Change of Absorbent Incontinence Products in Women With Urinary Incontinence.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Urinary incontinence (UI) is common in women. For up to 77%, the use of absorbent continence products (pads) is central to management. Pad changes are common and reasons for change are not fully described. We hypothesized that women change their pads for many reasons other than wetness and at saturation levels well below advertised capacity. METHODS: A sample of 11 community dwelling women aged 65-95 (mean 78.1, SD 8.2) years was included. Participants completed a bespoke questionnaire on satisfaction with their current pads; UI severity and quality of life were meas

The Impact of Microclimate on Skin Health With Absorbent Incontinence Product Use: An Integrative Review.

This integrative review considers the role of skin occlusion and microclimate in incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD), with a particular focus on disposable, body-worn, absorbent incontinence products. Although the mechanisms are not fully understood, the primary causes of IAD are well-established: occluded skin, in prolonged contact with urine and/or feces and exposed to abrasive forces, is more likely to be affected, and each of these factors can be influenced by wearing absorbent incontinence products. Studies comparing the effect of various absorbent products on skin health have been h

Improving urinary incontinence management and sleep quality with wetness sensing technology in absorbent products.

Using absorbent products to manage the urinary incontinence (UI) of dependent residents in care facilities (such as nursing homes, and hospitals) requires frequent routine checks throughout the day and night to see if products need changing. Timely changes of saturated products are necessary to avoid long-lasting skin exposure to wet absorbent products, unpleasant odor, leaking of such products and embarrassing moments for the users. Limited staffing, high workload, and peaks on the demand for caregiving are challenges that hamper swift support for the care dependent population. This paper des

Tetrabutylammonium hydroxide and zinc salts in cellulose-based colloidal systems enhance fruit shelf life.

This study explores the development of cellulose-based active colloidal systems to enhance the antimicrobial properties of absorbent food pads and prolong the shelf life of cherry tomatoes. Food pads impregnated with colloidal systems made of microcrystalline cellulose dissolved in tetrabutylammonium hydroxide (TBAH) with zinc salts (ZnCl2 and ZnSO4) were tested for their antifungal efficacy. In vitro results revealed complete fungal suppression by TBAH alone and in combination with ZnCl2. The interaction between TBAH and ZnSO4 exhibited synergistic antifungal activity, while an additive effec

Factors associated with caregiver burden of toileting assistance at home versus in a nursing home: A cross-sectional study.

This study aimed to identify differences in caregiver burden related to toileting assistance, and examine the factors associated with the most burdensome aspects of providing toileting assistance. In 2019, a self-administered postal survey was conducted with 743 caregivers of older adults who received subsidies for continence products in Komatsu City, Japan. Both family caregivers and nursing home staff answered questions regarding older adults' urinary/fecal symptoms, toileting assistance, and perceived caregiver burden. Older adults living at home had less need for toileting assistance than

Cost consequence analysis of transcutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (TTNS) for urinary incontinence in care home residents alongside a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Urinary incontinence (UI) is prevalent in more than half of residents of nursing and residential care homes and can have a detrimental impact on dignity and quality of life. Care homes predominantly use absorbent pads to contain UI rather than actively treat the condition. Transcutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (TTNS) is a non-invasive, safe, low-cost intervention with demonstrated effectiveness for reducing UI in adults. We examined the costs and consequences of delivering TTNS to care home residents in comparison to sham (inactive) electrical stimulation. METHODS: A cost conseq

Rapidly polymerized cellulose-based hydrogel pads enabled by bromothymol blue for multifunctional fruit storage.

Hydrogel absorbent pads prolong shelf life of foods, but moisture regulation remains challenging. Herein, a bromothymol blue (BTB)-induced ZnCl2-dissolved cellulose/poly(2-hydroxyethyl acrylate) hydrogel (ZnC/PHEA-B) was developed via rapid free-radical polymerization. BTB concentration gradients (0-80 mg) were established to regulate polymerization behavior and optimize hydrogel performance. BTB accelerated polymerization, reducing the peak-temperature time from 1140 s to 270 s and increasing the peak temperature from 26.1 to 53.3 °C. Based on polymerization behavior, mechanical properties, a

Resource recovery from soiled sanitary napkin waste-a state-of-the-art review.

With ever-improving social and medical awareness about menstrual hygiene in India, the demand for sanitary napkins has increased significantly. The utilization of high-quality and environment-friendly raw materials to produce these pads is further supporting the growth of the market. However, with improving demand and usage, the need for proper disposal techniques becomes more relevant, since all of these pads get contaminated with human blood which makes them a biohazard and can cause significant damage to human health and the environment. One sanitary pad takes around 800 years to degrade na

Acrylate Systemic Contact Dermatitis.

Acrylates, the 2012 American Contact Dermatitis Society allergen of the year, are found in a range of products including the absorbent materials within feminine hygiene pads. When fully polymerized, acrylates are nonimmunogenic; however, if not completely cured, the monomers can be potent allergens.A 28-year-old woman is presented, who had her teeth varnished with Isodan (Septodont, Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, France) containing HEMA (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) with no initial reaction. Approximately 1 month later, the patient developed a genital dermatitis secondary to her feminine hygiene pads.

Review of current technologies for urinary incontinence: strengths and limitations.

A wide range of continence products is available, and this paper focuses on products to prevent incontinence (such as urinals and commodes) and to contain or manage urinary incontinence (such as absorbent pads, penile sheaths and urethral catheters). Drawing on results from published clinical evaluations at the Continence Product Evaluation Network at UCL and at other centres, the strengths and limitations of the major categories of incontinence products currently on the market are reviewed. It is concluded that, although products for continence have improved considerably over the last 20 year
