OBJECTIVE: To understand and compare the impact of 11 filters to remove records on animals or nonhumans in Ovid Embase, which are routinely used despite there being no performance data for them. To understand the indexing of relevant subject headings in Embase.
METHODS: To assess filter performance, we screened and categorized 3,000 records as 'should be removed' or 'should be retained' and calculated the sensitivity, specificity, and overall accuracy for each filter. We also reported on the number of records with human participants or data that were incorrectly removed by each filter.

OBJECTIVE: This study asked whether urologists can tell human-written abstracts apart from artificial intelligence (AI)-written abstracts when both describe the same study, and whether the answer depends on which AI model did the writing.
METHODS: Fifteen published urology studies were selected. For each study, the original human-written abstract was paired with three AI-written abstracts covering the same material, produced by Claude Sonnet 4.6, GPT-5.5, and Gemini 3 Flash using identical instructions and each model's ordinary consumer settings. Because all four versions described the same s

Accurate classification of cancer-related biomedical abstracts is critical for advancing cancer informatics and supporting decision-making in healthcare research. Yet progress in this domain is often constrained by limited availability of labeled corpora and the high computational demands of transformer-based approaches. To address these challenges, we propose a Residual Graph Attention Network (R-GAT) that integrates multi-head attention with residual connections to capture semantic and relational dependencies in biomedical texts. Evaluated on a curated dataset of 1,875 PubMed abstracts spann

BACKGROUND: Living systematic reviews (LSRs) maintain an updated summary of evidence by incorporating newly published research. While they improve review currency, repeated screening and selection of new references make them labourious and difficult to maintain. Large language models (LLMs) show promise in assisting with screening and data extraction, but more work is needed to achieve the high accuracy required for evidence that informs clinical and policy decisions.
OBJECTIVE: The study evaluated the effectiveness of an LLM (GPT-4o) in title and abstract screening compared with human review

BACKGROUND: Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) annual meetings provide opportunities to disseminate cardiothoracic research. We assessed rates of publication of STS abstracts as manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals over five years and determined factors associated with successful publication.
METHODS: The STS "Annual Meeting Archive" was searched online for abstract books from STS annual meetings from 2015-2019. Abstract books were reviewed for information about presented abstracts. A PubMed and Google search was then performed to identify corresponding peer-reviewed journal publications.

Although analysis of hospital discharge data (HDD) can provide important information about severe nonfatal injuries, HDD often do not include information about the causes of these injuries (e.g., motor-vehicle crashes and assaults). Inconsistent reporting of causes of injury has limited the usefulness of HDD for injury surveillance. The International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) includes codes for classifying external causes of injury (E-codes). This report describes progress in implementing E-code reporting in states.

The rise of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in scientific writing has prompted the development of platforms designed to "humanize" AI-generated text by rephrasing content to reduce its detectability as machine-generated. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of chatbots and dedicated platforms in humanizing AI-generated abstracts. Thirty high-impact scientific articles published in dentomaxillofacial radiology journals were selected. The Methodology and Results sections of each abstract were used to prompt two chatbots-ChatGPT and Gemini-to generate complete abstracts. These AI-

PURPOSE: Oral mucositis is a common debilitating side effect of cancer therapy. Numerous randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have examined interventions for this complication. Accurate reporting of RCT results in abstracts is crucial to treatment decisions. Spin undermines the integrity of the information presented and compromises evidence-based practice. This study evaluated the reporting quality of, and spin in, abstracts of RCTs of four interventions for oral mucositis: benzydamine, photobiomodulation therapy, oral cryotherapy, and keratinocyte growth factor, and assessed factors that can a

Syndrome is one of the oldest terms in the medical vocabulary. Traditionally, the term has been used mainly as a designation for complex medical entities, such as multiple abnormalities, that are characterized by clusters of concurring symptoms, usually three or more. During the mid-twentieth century, the meaning and the use of the term were altered. First to take place was an attempt to eliminate physicians' names from syndrome nomenclature, resulting in a significant increase in the use of descriptive designations in proportion to eponyms. But the trend was counterbalanced by the creation of

BACKGROUND: Reporting bias is prominent within study abstracts and has the potential to influence readers and affect patient care. The purpose of our study is to identify and describe the incidence of spin in abstracts of systematic reviews and meta-analyses of matrix-induced autologous cartilage implantation (MACI).
METHODS: Using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, PubMed and Embase were searched for systematic reviews and meta-analyses on MACI. Screening and data extraction were conducted independently by two authors. Abstracts were asses

OBJECTIVES: Large effect sizes (ESs), especially when prominently presented in trial abstracts, draw large attention, but it is important to understand whether they are trustworthy. We aimed to assess indicators of transparency and trustworthiness in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) reporting some large ES for continuous outcomes in their abstract, in comparison with RCTs presenting only nonlarge ESs in their abstract.
STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: We included RCTs indexed in MEDLINE between January 1, 2024 and March 18, 2025, presenting at least one standardized mean differences of absolute v

The objectives of this study were to assess the reporting quality of randomized controlled trial (RCT) abstracts published in leading laser medicine journals and investigate the association between potential predictors and reporting quality. The official online archives of four leading laser medicine journals were hand-searched to identify RCTs published in 2014 and 2015. A reporting quality assessment was carried out using the original 16-item CONsolidated Standards Of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) for Abstracts checklist. For each abstract, an overall CONSORT score (OCS) was calculated (score r

Atlantic salmon's (Salmo salar) annual aquaculture production exceeds 2M tonnes globally, and for the UK forms the largest single food export. However, aquaculture production is negatively affected by a range of different diseases and parasites. Effort to control pathogens should be focused on those which are most "important" to aquaculture. It is difficult to specify what makes a pathogen important; this is particularly true in the aquatic sector where data capture systems are less developed than for human or terrestrial animal diseases. Mortality levels might be one indicator, but these can

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence has gained relevance due to its potential to reduce the workload in evidence synthesis or bibliometric projects. While the main focus has been lately on the use of instruction-tuned large language models, zero-shot classification models have not been tested for such task. These models are large language models trained on large datasets of labeled data able to categorize text among proposed labels, irrespective of the text domain or the topic. They are relatively small, able to run on consumer-grade computers, and almost hyperparameter-free.

BACKGROUND: Despite recent advancements in the understanding and classification of oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD), their terminology remains inconsistent and heterogeneous throughout the scientific literature, thus affecting evidence-based decision-making relevant for clinical management of these disorders. Updating this classification represents a necessity to improve the indexing and retrieval of OPMD publications, in particular for systematic reviews and meta-analysis.
