Quinonoid constituents as contact sensitisers in Australian blackwood (Acacia melanoxylon RBR).

Australian blackwood (Acacia melanoxylon RBR) is a valuable commercial timber that since 1925 has been incriminated as being injurious to health. In addition to toxic effects numerous cases of allergic contact dermatitis and bronchial asthma have been observed in woodworkers. Several constituents have been identified in recent years, but none of them could be considered as aetiological factors. Sensitizing experiments performed with blackwood heartwood extracts corroborated the described sensitising properties. Chemical studies showed the occurrence of two or possibly three quinones that produ

Acacia seyal and Terminalia brownii associated airborne contact dermatitis (Dukhan dermatitis).

Taking scented smoke baths (Dukhan) is a universal custom among African women who indulge in it for pleasure, cleanliness, health, and for restoration after childbirth. The woods used in this procedure are usually Acacia seyal and Terminalia brownii. This report is a case series of 11 women with brown-erythematous excoriated papules, plaques, and lichenification confined to the sites of scented smoke baths. They were diagnosed with airborne contact dermatitis on the basis of patient history, existence of dust agents, the morphology and distribution of the lesions, the results of epicutaneous t

Electrospray-assisted drying of live probiotics in acacia gum microparticles matrix.

Acacia gum solution was employed as a carrier for electrospray-assisted drying of probiotic cells. To optimize the process, effect of gum concentration, thermal sterilization as a prerequisite for microbial studies, and surfactant addition on physical properties of feed solution was investigated. Increasing gum concentration from 20 to 40 wt.% led to a viscosity increase, whilst surface tension did not change meaningfully and electrical conductivity declined after an increasing trend up to 30 wt.% of the gum. Thermal sterilization increased the viscosity without any significant effect on the c

Solvent-dependent metabolomic profiling of Acacia mearnsii bark: an untargeted metabolomics approach.

With great social and economic importance, black wattle bark (Acacia mearnsii De Wild.) stands out due to its high content of condensed tannins. Although it is a known and exploited source of proanthocyanidins, little is known about the other compounds that may be present in this raw material and that may further contribute to its bioactive properties. Given this context, this work focused on applying untargeted metabolomics to investigate the metabolic diversity of black wattle bark using different extraction solvents. Furthermore, it aimed to investigate the proanthocyanidin profile of the r

Chemical modification of tannins from Acacia mearnsii to produce formaldehyde free flocculant.

Flocculants and coagulants market is expected to grow in a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 5.9% between 2017 and 2022. The development of non-pollutant coagulants/flocculants aiming to replace conventional ones, usually toxic, has been extensively studied and one alternative is the possibility of obtaining tannin-based flocculants, compounds present in many plants and easily extracted. However, in order to use tannins as flocculants, their cationization is necessary, which is normally accomplished by Mannich reaction that requires formaldehyde addition, a toxic compound. In order to fill

Nematicidal activity of 'major royal jelly protein'-containing glycoproteins from Acacia honey.

Parasitic nematodes infect more than two billion people worldwide particularly in developing countries. We previously reported nematicidal activity of natural honey using model nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. In this study, characterization of nematicidal effects of natural honey and its glycoproteins has been carried out. Chromatographically separated honey glycoproteins showed potent anti-C. elegans activity (LD50 = 100 ng proteins/μL). Honey glycoproteins with molecular masses of ∼260 kD and ∼160 kD comprised of 'major royal jelly protein-1'-containing complexes. In these complexes, MRJP1

Tannins from Acacia mearnsii De Wild. Bark: Tannin Determination and Biological Activities.

The bark of Acacia mearnsii De Wild. (black wattle) contains significant amounts of water-soluble components acalled "wattle tannin". Following the discovery of its strong antioxidant activity, a wattle tannin dietary supplement has been developed and as part of developing new dietary supplements, a literature search was conducted using the SciFinder data base for "Acacia species and their biological activities". An analysis of the references found indicated that the name of Acacia nilotica had been changed to Vachellia nilotica, even though the name of the genus Acacia originated from its ori

Nutritive value and palatability of guajillo (Acacia berlandieri) as a component of goat diets.

Guajillo (Acacia berlandieri Benth.) is a low-growing, multi-stemmed shrub widely distributed in southern Texas and northern Mexico. Proximate analysis indicates the leaves have high concentrations of nitrogen and energy suggesting that it is a potentially valuable forage resource, yet excessive consumption is believed to cause a hind-limb ataxia. The nutritive value of, and their preference for, guajillo leaves was determined in two trials using male Angora goats (8 months old, 23.7+/-1.09kg initial weight). In a metabolism trial, air-dried guajillo leaves and alfalfa hay were chopped and mix

Gum Acacia attenuates cisplatin toxic effect spermatogenesis dysfunction and infertility in rats.

This study aimed to investigate the potential benefits Gum Arabic/Acacia senegal (GA) in mitigating the harmful effects of cisplatin (CP) on spermatogenesis and testicular health in male adult rats. A total of forty albino rats were used in the study and divided into four groups; control, GA, CP, and Co-treated group, which received both CP and GA concurrently. The results revealed that CP caused a significant increase in oxidative stress and a decrease in antioxidant activities (CAT, SOD, and GSH), which disturbed the testicular machinery. This caused significant histological and ultrastructu

Effects of gum arabic (Acacia senegal) on renal function in diabetic mice.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Gum arabic (GA) is a Ca(2+)-, Mg(2+)- and K(+)-rich dietary fiber used for the treatment of patients with chronic kidney disease in Middle Eastern countries. In healthy mice, GA treatment increases creatinine clearance, renal ADH excretion, as well as intestinal and renal excretion of Mg(2+) and Ca(2+). GA decreases plasma Pi concentration, urinary Pi and Na(+) excretion. The present study explored the effects of GA on renal function in diabetic mice. METHODS: Metabolic cage experiments were performed on Akita mice (akita(+/-)), which spontaneously develop insulin deficiency

Antiparasitic activity of methanolic extract of Acacia oxyphylla (Leguminosae) against Raillietina echinobothrida.

Acacia oxyphylla has been used traditionally by the natives of Mizoram against intestinal worm infections. In the present study, the crude methanolic extract of the plant was tested in vitro on the cestode parasite Raillietina echinobothrida to evaluate its potential anthelmintic efficacy. The test parasites were exposed to varying concentrations of the plant extract in phosphate buffered saline and they all slipped into a flaccid paralytic state at varying periods of time post incubation. Ultrastructural observations on the paralysed worms revealed wide scale destruction of the parasite tegum

Tyrosol-gold nanoparticle functionalized acacia gum-PVA nanofibers for mitigation of Candida biofilm.

Increasing incidences of fungal infections and prevailing antifungal resistance in healthcare settings has given rise to an antifungal crisis on a global scale. The members of the genus Candida, owing to their ability to acquire sessile growth, are primarily associated with superficial to invasive fungal infections, including the implant-associated infections. The present study introduces a novel approach to combat the sessile/biofilm growth of Candida by fabricating nanofibers using a nanoencapsulation approach. This technique involves the synthesis of tyrosol (TYS) functionalized chitosan go
