Effects of comprehensive educational reforms on academic success in a diverse student body.

CONTEXT: Calls for medical curriculum reform and increased student diversity in the USA have seen mixed success: performance outcomes following curriculum revisions have been inconsistent and national matriculation of under-represented minority (URM) students has not met aspirations. Published innovations in curricula, academic support and pipeline programmes usually describe isolated interventions that fail to affect curriculum-level outcomes. METHODS: United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 performance and graduation rates were analysed for three classes of medical studen

The Impact of Mentoring on Academic Career Success in Surgical Subspecialties: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: As of 2019, women comprise 52.4% of medical school matriculants, make up more than one-third of the active physician workforce, and nearly half of residents and fellows. Although the number of women physicians continues to increase, many surgical subspecialities, including orthopaedic surgery, have not seen a substantial increase in the percentage of women physicians. This may be due to a lack of mentorship. Efforts within the medical community to decrease the burden of gender bias on women include attempts to increase access to mentorship opportunities. Effective mentoring is a

Active Child, Accomplished Youth: Middle Childhood Active Leisure Fuels Academic Success by Emerging Adulthood.

Background/Objectives: Physical activity is an important protective factor throughout life. However, little research has observed the associations between the practice of physical activity and academic success longitudinally, and none have done so with a pan-Canadian sample. This article aims to examine the prospective associations between active leisure in middle childhood and academic achievement in emerging adulthood, for both boys and girls, beyond several family factors. Methods: Participants are 2775 children from the National Longitudinal Study on Children and Youth (NLSCY) aged between

Students with an undisclosed hearing loss: a challenge for academic access, progress, and success?

It has been suggested that only 8% of postsecondary students in the United States who have a hearing loss have disclosed that hearing loss to their institutions. Consistent with this suggestion, two anonymous surveys of students enrolled in courses with the Open University in the United Kingdom suggested that there were roughly 9,000 students in the Open University itself and over 42,000 students in higher education across the United Kingdom as a whole who had a hearing loss that they had not disclosed to their institutions. These students tended to be older people with a relatively mild heari

Beyond Academics: Holistic Predictors of Success in Physical Therapy Education.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Numerous studies have identified traditional, academic metrics as predictors for student success within residential, nonaccelerated Physical Therapy Education Programs (PTEPs). The purpose of this study was to explore nontraditional variables in the context of holistic admissions processes and their relationship with early student success in an accelerated, hybrid PTEP. SUBJECTS: This sample included students enrolled in a single accelerated, hybrid PTEP. METHODS: Preadmission and within-PTEP data were collated for two PTEP cohorts in an accelerated, hybrid model. Symptoms of ADHD and Other Common Mental Disorders Influence Academic Success in South African Undergraduates.

OBJECTIVE: ADHD symptoms are highly prevalent among university students. These symptoms, particularly the inattentive cluster, predispose students to poorer academic performance and worse academic adjustment. Moreover, ADHD symptoms are often comorbid with other common mental disorders; this comorbidity also leads to poor outcomes. South African students often have fewer resources to successfully transition to university. Hence, our longitudinal study used data from a sample of South African first-year undergraduate students to investigate (a) associations between ADHD symptoms and academic pe

Barriers Pushed Aside: Insights on Career and Family Success from Women Leaders in Academic Otolaryngology.

OBJECTIVE: Although the literature adequately identifies the current gender inequality that exists in academic otolaryngology and describes the barriers to advancement of women in academic medicine, there is little information regarding the daily details of how successful women in academic otolaryngology achieve work-life balance. This study was designed to better understand how women in academic otolaryngology achieve work-life balance while negotiating family and childrearing commitments, clinical workload, and scholarly activity, as well as to highlight coping strategies and behaviors that

How to optimize the prescription of laboratory tests? Success and failures in an academic hospital.

In the context of the flat-rate reimbursements in healthcare, we reviewed physicians' behavior towards laboratory test ordering. We demonstrated how it could be improved when a specific stage of the patient management is considered. We took a multi-step approach to analyze the laboratory test orders in the context of planned laparoscopic cholecystectomy in a general teaching hospital. A reference order set was defined through a collaborative analysis between clinicians and laboratory physicians. The clinical and financial impacts were then evaluated over a period of 24 months. After the introd

Social Class Discrimination and Academic Success: A Person-Centered Approach Among Adolescents Disadvantaged in Social Class.

INTRODUCTION: Prior research indicates that social class is strongly associated with academic outcomes such as GPA. However, little work explores the role that social discrimination plays in this relation. This study examined the link between social class discrimination and academic outcomes among high school students. METHOD: Participants were 956 working class adolescents (ages 13-18; 55% boys, 65% Latine) in the western United States. Using latent profile analysis, we identified four patterns of discrimination from five sources (teachers, classmates, friends, other teenagers, and community

Psychological health and academic success in rural Appalachian adolescents exposed to physical and sexual interpersonal violence.

Interpersonal violence (IPV) in adolescence is a serious public health concern and may have lasting behavioral effects and implications for adult relationships. Adolescents from 2 rural Appalachian high schools in 2011/2012 were surveyed using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Youth Risk Behavioral Surveillance (YRBS) survey, which assessed (a) physical IPV within a dating relationship, (b) sexual IPV (defined as forced sex/rape), and (c) those who experienced both. We present baseline rates of each form of IPV for these rural male and female adolescents and assessed the strength

Is there a relationship between executive functions and academic success in children with neurofibromatosis type 1?

The present study aimed to compare the executive function (EF) of children with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) to those of typically developing children and to investigate whether those abilities could predict the child's academic success in terms of academic skills and enablers. Twenty-nine children with NF1 and 27 age-and-gender-matched controls (aged 8-16 years) were examined with two tests to measure EF in an ecologically valid manner: the Behavioural Assessment of the Dysexecutive Syndrome in Children (BADS-C) and the parent questionnaire for the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Fun

Experience Corps: a dual trial to promote the health of older adults and children's academic success.

BACKGROUND: As the population ages, older adults are seeking meaningful, and impactful, post-retirement roles. As a society, improving the health of people throughout longer lives is a major public health goal. This paper presents the design and rationale for an effectiveness trial of Experience Corps™, an intervention created to address both these needs. This trial evaluates (1) whether senior volunteer roles within Experience Corps™ beneficially impact children's academic achievement and classroom behavior in public elementary schools and (2) impact on the health of volunteers. METHODS: Dua

Morphological Awareness: Connecting Language Foundations and Academic Literacy Success for Students With Language and Literacy Deficits.

PURPOSE: For school-age students with language and literacy deficits (LLD), such as those with developmental language disorder (DLD) and/or dyslexia, literacy challenges can affect reading comprehension, written language, and overall academic success. Researchers have established that instruction in morphological awareness, especially with a phonological, orthographic, semantic, and syntactic focus, results in positive reading and writing outcomes. The purpose of this clinical focus article is to provide evidence for a multilinguistic literacy intervention approach grounded in morphological aw

The impact of the program structure at Hannover Medical School on academic success in medical studies.

Aim: The classical course structure for medicine in Germany is separated by three sections of the medical state examination. This structure is generally regarded as sensible and unchangeable. Because the special program structure at Hannover Medical School (MHH) has one integrated, rather than two separate study blocks, it is possible to examine the influence of structural modifications on the study success of different admission groups. Methods: The data was obtained from students admitted to the MHH between 2006 and 2008 in different admission quotas. Study success was defined as the success

The impact of feeder school selectivity on predicting academic success in an allied health professional program.

UNLABELLED: Admission committee members have the important task of selecting candidates who have the best chance of academic success in their professional programs. Graduate record examination (GRE) scores and grade point average (GPA) are typically given heavy consideration in the admissions process. The purpose of the present study is to assess the impact of feeder school selectivity on the ability of GRE scores and GPA to predict probationary status in entry level physical therapy students. METHODS: Three hundred five (249 female, 56 male) students, who graduated from an entry-level Doctor

HESI admission assessment (A(2)) examination scores, program progression, and NCLEX-RN success in baccalaureate nursing: an exploratory study of dependable academic indicators of success.

In an effort to meet the demand for well-educated, high-quality nurses, schools of nursing seek to admit those candidates most likely to have both timely progression and first-time success on the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). Finding the right combination of academic indicators, which are most predictive of success, continues to be an ongoing challenge for entry-level baccalaureate nursing programs across the United States. This pilot study explored the relationship of a standardized admission examination, the Health Education Systems, Inc. (HESI) Adm

Delaware Ranks 45th Nationally in Education Outcomes: Measuring Academic Success and Improving Educational Outcomes for Delaware's Youth.

Delaware's ranking as 45th in the nation for education outcomes highlights the multifaceted challenges and influences affecting children's development and education in the state. This paper explores how student success is measured in Delaware and the impact social determinants of health have on youth outcomes, including chronic absence, homelessness, nutrition, poverty, and adverse childhood experiences. By addressing these interconnected issues, Delaware can work towards closing achievement gaps and improving educational experiences for all students. Findings underscore the necessity for comp

Identifying academic success and underperformance: The discriminative power of very short answer questions and multiple-choice questions.

BACKGROUND: Multiple-choice questions (MCQs) are widely used in medical education, but are criticized for cueing and guessing. Very short answer questions (VSAQs), which require students to generate responses independently, may better assess knowledge. While VSAQs demonstrate higher item discrimination within individual exams, their effectiveness in distinguishing academic performance across multiple assessments remains unclear - representing a key gap in the validation of VSAQs under Messick's framework, specifically the category of "relations to other variables". This study examines whether

Academic success and mental health: The paradox of Frontoparietal-Default Mode Network coupling among children facing poverty.

Childhood family income is a powerful predictor of academic achievement and mental health. Here, we ask whether children living in poverty who succeed academically are subsequently protected from, or at risk for, internalizing symptoms. Prior research indicates that children in poverty with better academic performance tend to have higher temporal coupling between the Lateral Frontoparietal Network (LFPN) and Default Mode Network (DMN) than lower-performing children in poverty. An open question is whether higher LFPN-DMN coupling has maladaptive long-term consequences for mental health for this
